    John Plumtree on Robbie Deans

I guess "tits up" is a bit subjective. How about this correction "...and when the Wallabies fail to beat the ABs in what, 8? attempts, and have their lowest overall wins ratio under any coach in the last 30 years...". No assumptions there. The words "hasn't improved" do reflect the situation...

    John Plumtree on Robbie Deans

Plumtree has fallen into the same trap as many others: If you first assume as fact that Deans is the best possible coach, then when things go tits up (over a 3 year period) more and more new theories have to be developed to maintain that assumption. Try this exercise: 1.Pretend you don't know...

I think they've all got some stuff to work on, but you can't train every minute of every day.

    Wallabies vs Boks Bloemfontein

I like it that changes have been made. I'm not sure that McCalman and Chisholm are clearly better than Brown and Mumm, but changes needed to be made. We know Brown will throw himself into everything if given the chance, he just doesn't have the precence needed for a Wallaby 8. I think Mumm has...

As unaccustomed as I am to making speeches ...

What are you doing man?! Entrusting all your good work to those neanderthal new moderators?! The end of the world is nigh!!!!!! Excellent work to date though. Beer will of course be forthcoming when you are in my neck of the woods.

Wallabies V Boks Loftus Versfeld Pretoria 28/08/2010

TPN is a gutsy guy, no question about that. My issue is that it should not be the players who decide on substitutions - sometimes they need to be protected, even from themselves.

Wallabies V Boks Loftus Versfeld Pretoria 28/08/2010

Ah, now I understand - it is the players who decide when they will come on from the bench and in what position. So it was because they didn't fancy a game that Moore, Burgess et al didn't get on.

    Waratahs 2011

They could do worse than signing that big young beast from the NZ u20s side...but I'd still prefer they stick with home grown talent.

Super 15... but where are our passionates?

Good question. Difficult to answer. One thing all the Aussie Super teams should consider is that empty seats in their stadiums are a bad thing. They must have a price structure that appeals not just to the hard core supporter. Big crowds are appealing to broadcasters, advertisers and sponsors...

Juan Smith can do it all at 6 7 or 8, sorry to say.

NRL: Considering a Raid on 'Vulnerable Rugby'?

The ARU needs to set their player payment structure up to reflect their resources. If there are players who want to move overseas to play rugby (or to a different sport, no matter how provincial or boring) then so be it.

So it is more expensive in Jo'burg than Cape Town? What price a win?

Wallabies V Boks Loftus Versfeld Pretoria 28/08/2010

I think you are probably about right with the starting XV Gnostic. Hodgson really can't take a trick. My guess is a 4:3 split on the bench. I would go with Turner over JO'C in the starting line up (Turner is a winger with excellent defence, and is safe under the high ball), with JO'C to come on...

    South Africa tour (and squad)

Good to see at least two specialist wingers in the squad now. It will be even better to see the 11 and 14 jerseys filled by wingers. I hope for, but don't expect, a few sensible changes, and good use of the bench.

Wow Paarlbok - that post is awesome. What a guy. Thanks for posting it.

    Waratahs 2011

I haven't seen him playing for Uni, so can't comment on that. The issue is that for all the criticism of Tom Carter, he did a pretty good job for the Tahs at 12. For much of the season he played at 13, which didn't suit him. On balance, I am happy to see him in the squad as he offers things no...
