Ahhhh the 80s - Depeche Mode, Acid wash jeans and Kylie on Neighbours. Much as it was fun, the world has moved on quite a bit since then. Whatever the recipe was for winning Rugby matches then is unlikely to be the panacea now, though did we win? I recall a fair few heavy defeats by the ABs...

Because the Kiwis are generally better man on man. The reasons for that are many, but start with the fact that virtually every decent male athlete in NZ would give his left teste to play for NZ schoolboys whereas our best are spread across a number of codes. I don’t think playing lads ‘out of...

WLF, I agree there were some ‘interesting’ selection choices last year. It does seem though that there is a fair gnashing of teeth most years on this issue. Where I beg to differ is on the concept of ‘playing out of position’. What does this mean and who determines it? Was Izzy playing out of...

That approach would have seen Donaldson (a 10 selected at 15) miss out on ASB altogether or at least on a starting spot WLF. Do you think that would have been the preferred outcome? Most players by Opens can competently cover more than one position and it can make sense to ‘plug and play’...

BM - Unfortunately, Kennedy is not playing this year and early indications suggest a lock spot would be found for Flaherty (B). Perhaps he goes to 4, Moretti to 6 and Murphy to 7 given Glassie is a back. Barker2k18 - there was a lengthy debate about Reimer missing out which you can read at...

Knox 24 d Stannies 13. A somewhat rusty performance by both sides with a number of errors. Some good signs in the Knox forwards where 7 Breden and 6 Gratwicke were busy and damaging. A number of areas to work on but some indications this Knox team may gel in weeks to come.

Australian Schoolboys & National Championships 2017

Yes, there have been plenty sceptical about Knox's growth and ever larger year sizes, but their HSC results have improved every year for the past five years. With over 300 students per year and being non selective, you would intuitively expect results to have deteriorated. They are clearly...

Australian Schoolboys & National Championships 2017

Congratulations to 2017 Aust Schoolboy, Tom Woodcock, who was joint dux of Knox Grammar with an ATAR of 99.9 - no mean feat with timing of the Schoolboys' campaign butting up against the HSC exams. Just goes to show that playing high level sport can be balanced with an academic focus. Anyone...

NSW Blue into final after a tough fought 3 tries to 1 win over ACT. Unfortunately, NSW White couldn't make it an all Tahs final, losing 20-10 to VIC. They now play ACT for 3rd spot. Not sure about the girls results yet

    Schools Sevens Competition

I've had a bit less exposure there as they had the boys on one pitch and girls on another for much of the day. But from what I have seen, the NSW Blue team has looked slick and athletic and the WA team have some real talent, esp the diminutive no 2 who persists in backslamming much bigger...

Nsw White d a well drilled and gutsy WA 24-19 - kudos to WA coaches as both the boys and girls teams have been fit, committed, technically excellent and a real threat in every match. Ultimately, NSW won both pools at the end of a long day at Ballymore (and unless I'm mistaken, both QLD teams...

Nsw Blue get out of jail with a last ditch try to beat qld White 22-17. Full marks to QW for taking it to NSW and exposing their Achilles heel - they struggled to deal with being turned around several times by a clever series of grubber kicks by QW. There muat be a few qld selectors wondering...

NSW White d Qld Red 28-14 after a very shaky start letting the Reds score 2 quick tries in first minute. A gutsy fightback. ACT up next which promises to be a real battle. Blue play VIC who looked to have some talent in their win over Qld White earlier.

Qld Red not overly convincing in defeating NT by 5 tries to 2. I think this is the qld 1s team. Will need a substantial improvement to worry the NSW 1s

Teams above are other way round - White is Blue and vice versa. Blue d SA by many to nil. Looked very sharp and took every opportunity they had. Better opposition may test them, but on that display they will be hard to beat.
