^^^ agreed, he should have been there instead of Trobec. He pottered around in Our 3rds last year. Probably got picked because he was such a big unit.

Very much doubt you will see Lachlan Ilias at 10. He's not on organiser, and would be wasted there - but is the best ball runner of all the CAS teams. Expect to see him at 13 or 15.

Unlikely to see Glassie at 7...he's playing 13. And I nominate him as the best ball runner in the CAS this year.

BM - Unfortunately, Kennedy is not playing this year and early indications suggest a lock spot would be found for Flaherty (B). Perhaps he goes to 4, Moretti to 6 and Murphy to 7 given Glassie is a back.

Barker2k18 - there was a lengthy debate about Reimer missing out which you can read at your leisure on the 2016 CAS U16s thread.

Carl S - I agree Ilias is a very good runner, but think you under rate his organisational skills. He piloted the CAS u16s around very effectively from 10. Not sure who would be a better option from this years crop - maybe Edmed. Time will tell.

Lots of good input.

We will struggle for 10’s maybe this year?

We were pretty lucky with the two we had in 2017! Can neecessian play 10?

I like the idea of playing Moretti in the second row, because it opens up the chance for More backrowers.

But know Flaherty is a handy second rower.

Will be tough for the selectors!

I don't think using the 16s CAS side in 2016 as the backbone will turn out to be correct for the 2018 side.
Too much changes in 2 years.

The only thing I would say is that i really hope we pick the best boys in their rightfull position, not move them around to accommodate others.

The Australian schoolboy selectors did exactly that last year, and it was clearly ridiculous, plain for all to see, and we got the befitting result v the NZ side.

That approach would have seen Donaldson (a 10 selected at 15) miss out on ASB altogether or at least on a starting spot WLF. Do you think that would have been the preferred outcome? Most players by Opens can competently cover more than one position and it can make sense to ‘plug and play’ where this results in the best players on the pitch provided you don’t end up with fish out of water.

I respect your opinion C&P,

But in that particular case the selectors knew and chose to ignore a 9 and 10 combination, I won't talk about the Waverley 12 (that treatment was disgraceful), who had not only played together for years at school but also Randwick junior rugby.
That combination defeated all in front of them both at school level and rep level (CAS).

As soon as the NSW1 on-field team fiasco happened, the NSW 1sts lost and then so did the Aussie schoolboys.
Of course there was no guarantee we would have beaten a very good NZ team but we never looked like it, and we had already had a dose of fooling around with players in specialist positions, in the NSW 1 side.

To be honest I don't think it's a matter of me protecting Waverley, I would advocate this in any other situation.
Picking people in odd positions, to get them in, has been going on for years now at Aussie schoolboy level and it is also co-incidental that the Aussie schoolboys haven't won for years, but probably not the only factor.

Many people I have spoken to agree with what happened last year, and I don't think players are at their best when they are playing out of position, for obvious reasons.

Just my opinion.

Got a predicted Waves 1st XV side?

Barker2k18,

I would imagine all schools now have a squad of 1s/2s.
So the only Waves boys I would think for the 1s that appear to be obvious are :
Moretti, Molloy, Murphy,Andrews,Whiteman, McGuigan, Baldwin.

All of whom played 1s last year.

There are a few new boys, time will tell, but there is competition for every spot.

I will be able to inform you once I see the line up for the 1st game against Shore April 7, at Shore.

Will be keen to see Shore this year, I think they will be motivated and strong.

WLF, I agree there were some ‘interesting’ selection choices last year. It does seem though that there is a fair gnashing of teeth most years on this issue.

Where I beg to differ is on the concept of ‘playing out of position’. What does this mean and who determines it? Was Izzy playing out of position at 14 for the Tahs last week and, if so, does that mean Cheika should never be permitted to select him there? Closer to home, if CAS select Moretti at 4 this year, does this mean NSW and potentially ASB selectors should be limited to selecting him there when he has previously performed at 6 or 8? These might seem obvious anomalies, but plenty of boys have experience in a number of positions. Who decides what their ‘specialist’ position is and how long are they bound to only play that position before they are allowed to play and be selected in another?

I’ve investigated further:

CAS open rep players returning in 2018:

NIKOLAS-ALEXANDER GINIS (T) Prop
THOMAS LAMBERT (T) Prop
LACHLAN ILIAS (T) (NSW 1’s) Centre/10/15
LUCA MORETTI (W) (Aus schoolboys) Backrow
HARRY WHITEMAN (W) (NSW 2’s) Second Row
PHOENIX BALDWIN (W) Winger
BILLY POLLARD (B) Hooker/Backrow
LUKE REIMER (B) (NSW 1’s) Backrow
Jayden KITCHENER (B) Lloyd McDermott Rep team. Fullback/9/10
DAVID TEJCEK (B) (NSW 1’s) Halfback
JAMES WESTBURY (A) 10/15
MILES Branagan (A)

Players in CAS that represented NSW u16’s in 2017 or 16 but have not yet represented opens CAS:

Conor Molloy (W) (2016 and 2017) Backrow
Lathan Hutchinson-Walters (W) Fullback
Kyle Galloway (B) Winger
Jordan Cameron (B) Second row
Sam Rechner (K) Centre
Will Kablau (K) Prop
Oliver Hughes (K) Second Row
Malachi Hawkes (T) Prop
Ben Pollack (A) 10

Rep league players not mentioned above:

Tane Edmed (T) 10/12/15
Tadgh Murphy (W) Backrow
Jordan Swann (W) centre in league - so a winger?

Please let me know if this information is incorrect and I will fix the mistakes and credit you below.

Some of this information is based on posts on this board as well as input from other commentators and my investigations.

There are 5 open NSW players and 9 NSW U16’s players to build the CAS squads around. Plus another 7 who were in opens CAS in 2017. So 21 players with high quality rep experience. Good for CAS in 2018. There were also another 3 boys listed in league representative teams that will likely be in the mix.

Not saying they should all be 1sts or Rep teams at all, but it’s a helpful place to start.

There are also quite a few players that have had Sydney junior rep experience as shown in the link below - I don’t know all the players so if you know boys that are here, let me know. This is obviously not as the same level as NSW though.

Some names noticed from CAS schools:

Marco Moretti, Aisea Aholelei, Malachi Hawkes, Levi Milford, Luca Antico, Jordan Swann, Justice Stuls, Alex O’Reilly. Let me know if there are others im missing, I feel I’ve investigated enough!
