    Rugby News from unexpected places

Been a while since I posted in here. The Rugby Europe Super Cup is back under way with the Eastern conference again looking the stronger of the two. Both new teams the Romanian Wolves and RC Batumi seem to have seamlessly replaced the two Russian clubs that were disqualified due to the ban...

    Rugby 7s general chat

Will be interesting to see actually. The cap is set for $350k next season not including the two marquee spots. That needs to accomodate 22/23 other players. There are also 4 new teams entering. So there will be even more competition for talent. Hell of a balancing act for the clubs. But I cannot...

    Rugby 7s general chat

I suspect she'll be signed as one of the Knights marquee players next season. Which means she'll be one of 2 on $100k as a full time Knights player/employee.

Perhaps. Wouldn't mind the 8 team concept either. Include the Drua.

    Rugby 7s general chat

I like this set up in it being state based. If I was asked to set up the elite pathway feeding the national teams it would be state based series exactly like this feeding directly into state based selections aligned with Super Rugby squads in a Spring/Summer series that could be promoted and packaged as...

    Rugby 7s general chat

Yes. Doesn't mean the 7s squad cannot actively recruit from it.

    RA Pathways.

Apparently will be broadcast on Stan.

    RA Pathways.

Certainly a step in the right direction. Hopefully in the future both NSW and Queensland can run two squads in both age groups as a means of building greater depth. But this is something we've needed to see for a while. Hopefully there's a level of development and tracking involved as well.

    Waratahs 2023

There's also that. The NRL doesn't stop for Origin.

    Waratahs 2023

Yeah, for sure. Part of pushing for a full schedule, a Cup comp and mid week Tests would be to develop a more integrated schedule that builds in room for the Cup and Tests with Super Rugby. We're not talking about just a 22 week season plus finals more when everything is taken into account something...

    Waratahs 2023

Who knows? But from everything we've seen those running the game tend to lack the vision or will to push for it to happen alongside a partner that cannot look beyond a Black jersey to see that for the game to survive as a professional option it needs to properly develop all levels of the...

    Waratahs 2023

If we're going to stick with SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) going forward then we need to really push for a proper home and away schedule of 22 rounds plus some kind of Cup competition with Japan and mid week Tests.

    Waratahs 2023

Will they be playing any games?

    Australian Rugby / RA

Yeah, something that came up quite a bit in the NRLW this season is the number of girls with in particular Rugby backgrounds. And with 4 more teams coming in for net year. Two of which from Sydney, one from Canberra and the other North Sydney there's definitely a need and interest to approach...

    Super Round 2023

Actually, having attended the Super Round this season the Kiwi fans tended to come and go with their teams with only a relatively small % turning up or hanging around once their team was no longer involved. Most of the casual fans who watched every game available at least from my experience were...

    Super Round 2023

Wait. Are you suggesting that Australia being the far larger economy and market is potentially more valuable even it's its current level of neglect in terms of Rugby? Many Kiwis won't like that. That would almost be like admitting that if they actually got off the pedestals and looked to come up...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

I'm of the position that we should be looking to run Tests mid week as a permanent thing alongside a push to greatly expand SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) if we remain involved in terms of schedule into a legitimate home and away season.

    Rugby 7s general chat

I differ on this. I think it should be targeted as a standalone structure in a relatively open slot in the calendar being the back end of the year in terms of Rugby. Attaching it to Super Rugby in my opinion would make it more of a sideshow that could be used as an excuse by those within the...

    Rugby 7s general chat

This was proposed by Geoff Parkes over 6 years ago over on The Roar. https://www.theroar.com.au/2016/08/15/the-wrap-introducing-rugby-sevens-smash/ It's essentially what you've suggested and something I am still a fan of as much now as I was then. Though I tend to think it needs to be a bit...

    CAS Rugby 2023

I like this concept. What would be really great is if it could be expanded upon in the future to feature a Top 8 or so play off set up. I think that would be very interesting.
