I would keep Waugh before I took Elsom. The Tahs have a better 6/8 in Mowen who is a long term investment. Elsom will at best play one season for the Tahs and be off next year IMO. I agree 100% with Hawko that Hickey has done Zero for the Tahs long term (or short term IMO) and should have been punted last year.

But Mowen has been cut loose. They don't want him. So not really a long term investment. Unfortunately.

But Mowen has been cut loose. They don't want him. So not really a long term investment. Unfortunately.

I have said numerous times that in 2012, I want to see at least 2, ideally 3, Aus S15 teams all knocking the socks off each other and the SA and NZ opposition from Rnd 1, and playing fan-friendly win-plenty rugby that pulls really good crowds (gate and TV). I want to see the Tahs fulfil their huge potential, etc. and finally become the true champion team from NSW that will quickly win a Final. Thus, the thing that chilled my spine at the definitely-cut-Mowen-loose decision was that it implied that the Waratahs CEO and Board had no intention of finding a new-broom, world-class coach, and permitting him a proper and considered assessment of all the player stocks at the Tahs' disposal, going into 2012. The Mowen-out move feels awfully like 'limited change on the way, Hickey and Jason Allen still know best what players are needed, and what ones can be dumped...' There was something ominously status-quo-rules about it all.

How long is Hooper signed for at the Brumbies? The Tahs should seriouly work on getting him. Him and Fainga'a cannibising each others game time should work in their favour.

the tahs havnt had a fetcher at 7 for a couple of years now>
i wonder why the best option was released a couple of years ago to now go star at the reds ? and why the next best options are way off the pace>

Its weird isn't it??

Beau Robinson, Matt Hodgson, Jono Jenkins, Michael Hooper.

Surely they can't have all 'slipped through the cracks'??

Someone has not been doing a good job of identifying talent. Jono Jenkins would have to be the obvious target, and would be a good acquisition.

Agreed t. A cynical man might suspect something ominous

I am very cynical as you have already stated RS, but in this case incompetance is the order of the day. Part of my tirade for the past two years regarding Tahs management. Where is the forward planning? Where is the continuous game plan improvement etc etc etc.

If Hickey goes will we see any apprciable change or do they say, "We have almost made it, we will just tweek it a bit." and ignore the fact that they have discarded Mowen (who has been a stalwart of the backrow the last two years), lost Beale and I would suggest will lose Barnes to retirement. Is that too cynical? I don't think so more like realism and poor managers taking the easy path and one they can trot out stats to support THEIR point of view.

I honestly can't understand why you would get rid of a bloke like Ben Mowen.

He has been consistently good enough to make your 22 for two years, in many cases he has been a mainstay of your XV. He is very consistent, and has great temperament off the paddock. You build club culture around blokes like this, and you piss off the playing group when you discard with them.

Let's not forget that he is a big bodied player, who enjoys the tight stuff. Who is making these decisions???

Any club who picks him up, will have made a good purchase.

I agree with the recent posts in regards to Ben Mowen - it is an absolute shame that a player of his potential and talent is being shown the door.

While it is remarkable to look at the specialist openside player that have 'slipped through the cracks' in previous years, I believe that the current heir apparent is still in the Tahs set-up (and seems to be Hickey's third choice) - Chris Alcock.

As I've been saying all along...

We're quite happy to trade Julian Salvi for Ben Mowen.

The Tahs get a 7, and the we get a big, powerful backrower.

Problem solved.

Unfortunately I in no way represent the Brumbies...

At the risk of repeating myself. In the four games that he has played since Waugh and McCutcheon were injured he has had two absolute shockers. In both games in SA he missed 7 tackles and made 8. About the only team that sort of performance qualifies you for is the Rebels!

So I am the only one suspicious of Waughs guiding hand and the waratah lack of holding a promising alternate 7? How handy would matt hodgeson be right about now?

ok ok phil waugh might be slow, small, often injured, unable to pilfer, unable to make dominant tackles, unable to support backline play- or even to encourage it for that matter, unable to be a linout option, unable to impose himself on opposition... but hes a good leader

I agree that he's slowed down, but he's not an empty jersey by any means.

His effort in the final against the Crusaders was superhuman.

With Phil not likely to figure in Deans's plans going forward he will have the opportunity to repair his broken body and bounce back refreshed. In my opinion the Waratahs would be crazy not to make sure that he is signed for at least the next two years. There is still plenty of fight and fury left in the old warrior but he has just been carrying too many injuries to perform at the extraordinarily high standard that the video clip reminds us of.
