I don't know who Hickey will play where but it may be an academic exercise since Barnes is crocked so often. I liked the way the Tahs played in the RSA at the end of last season with Hangers at 10 and KB (Kurtley Beale) at 12, but it is inconceivable that Barnes will not start somewhere.
Hickey will realise that he owes loyalty to Hangers who turned down a contract for $440K a year from Ulster to sign up for another year at the Tahs, on the understanding that if he tied down the 10 spot by the end of the 2010 S14, he would sign on for another gig. The Barnes acquisition happened after that but that was for only one year with an option. Hickey may have both Hangers and Barnes for 2011 - or neither.
Beale will turn 21 a month from now and it is about the time that we should be judging him as a senior player rather than somebody who was shoved into a S14 flyhalf position on the veldt a few weeks after leaving school. With the certain demotion of Carter, Beale could play 12 outside Barnes at 10, with Hangers twisting in the wind again - but it could be how NTA has it, with KB (Kurtley Beale) on the bench.
Forget about Beale on the wing because he isn't fast enough to play there. He is quick off the mark and good for a 20M burst as most 10s and 12s are, but that's about it. He could get away with playing 15 as he did for the Oz U/20 team before he did a hammy, and you could point out that he is faster than Hewat was, but you really want a fullback who can roof the ball up high and chase it fast in the modern game.
If Barnes is picked at 10 I trust that he won't be allowed to play too deep as he tends to do when he plays flyhalf. The disadvantages are obvious. And whoever plays where, I want our guys to have a go with ball in hand when it is on. Without the Carter firewall there should be no excuses. I have seen every home Waratahs game in the professional era at the ground but for a couple of family weddings I was dragged screaming to and I have never been so bored with the Tahs as this year, and I have seen some shockers.
If Hickey can't get that going with the forwards we have we should get somebody else for 2010.
As for the forwards: There won't be too many Oz outfits who are stronger provided Caldwell has recovered from his debilitating illness. They look a bit spoiled for choice in the front row and the only place they don't have specialist depth is at 7 - that is, if Dud Roodt is any good as a lock.
By contrast there is only one specialist 13 - Robbie Horne - and if he goes down it will another hammy injury it will be interesting. Sidey did well in the games I saw him play in the Magners League, but he is really a 12. For 2011 they should try to recruit a 13 and discard a 6, option but it could be a nonsense as the roster landscape could be have changed a lot in the next 7-8 months.
One thing for sure: they need a specialist goal kicker. Neither Barnes, Halangahu, Beale nor Turner are elite goal kickers and the best one in the Tahs stable, Adam D'Arcy; is just in the the professional academy.
I have updated the Tahs list of players in the next post since the official Tahs website left Daisy Dennis off their list. I have aded him and the "Last Year" details which give the final year of a player's contract - taking into account additional info from Noddy.
Noddy - I have kept Freier's "Last year" as is because of this link:
