As well As Ofa, the Tahs have also signed Chris Alcock from Gordon. Not sure what sort of contract, think he was originally offered a junior contract, he turned it down and was then offered a full contract.

Jowitt sounds a bit light for a pro-rugby era lock - 201cm and 113kg seems like the measurements for a bean pole.

Has anyone seen him play? 60 matches in 4 seasons sounds a bit light coming from the European season.

Mumm is a much better lock than 6 so Hickey needs to keep him there.

I stand corrected. I hope for the 'tahs and Wallabies sakes he turns out to be near the same class as Matfield but at 26 if he was he would have shown it by now surely....

In reality, Mowen is the 7, and Phil Waugh is the 6. That is essentially what ended up happening in the 2nd half of the Tahs' season. Mowen has the speed in the loose that Waugh no longer has. Waugh tends to focus on 'leadership' activities, like pointing out people that he wants other teammates to tackle. He is a great delegator and has a bright future in middle management ahead of him. Keeping him in the side means you need a 6'5" lineout option with mobility. Ben Coridas is 6'4" but will need to improve his ball winning in the air to push for Mowen's spot.

That's why I was saying he's sort of a back row 'utility'. He can play 6 perfectly well, 8 is what he grew up playing and he certainly has the nouse for it and you're right, for his size, his attack at the pill is second to none, making him a very handy 7 replacement. Having him on the bench allows the Tahs to also bench a specialist lock, which is a handy addition in and of itself.

Of course, as has been raised, his quality is above that of a bench player.

I think Foley is a size queen, we have recruited a pretty big pack.

Can anyone provide any info on this lad?

That's Ratu Nasiganiyavi. Nemani is his middle name. He looks like he's been on Kurtley Beale's diet.

From his twitter account

So Fava and Tilse are still on the books. Is 2010 the last year of their contracts? I hope so.

It was not possible to find out the “Last Year” all players will be under contract to the Tahs. Please advise if you have additional information to complete the list - but do not advise anything without providing the link from which you got your information.

Also please advise about the boo-boos you have spotted and I will change them.

So what is the story with Chris Alcock?

Gordon player. Spent the past Shute Shield season playing both 2nd and 1st Grade. I believe some Gordon players think he should have been a regular 1st team starter but that existing friendships/preferences/cliques stopped that happening. Nonetheless still scooped the Gordon player of the year. Think he is a Barker boy, very athletic for a back rower, kind of player that hits a ruck first and asks questions later, but has a good, wise, rugby head on him.

I'm excited!

Was a couple of years below him at Barker. Big, quick and (at least at 1st XV level) pretty aggro. Haven't seen him play since schoolboy rugby, but he was a big part of our pack that won us the CAS premiership. Wouldn't get too excited, but a good signing.

Alcock had an outstanding year in Sydney club rugby and I assumed that once he got going, and then wasn't in the starting Gordon XV, he was injured.

Nevertheless he is the biggest surprise for me on the Tahs contracted players list. I heard he had a contract but assumed it was an Academy contract, not a rookie contract.

He played no. 8 for Gordon but you wouldn't play him there in the S14 or even as a 6 IMO. I would peg him as a 7 and one of the backups for Waugh - and almost certainly behind Coridas; not that he is a specialist fetcher either.

Coridas - I thought that he had accepted another professional Academy contract but that information was obviously wrong. Now we know, maybe, why Beau Robinson and Dave Dennis aren't with the Tahs. They needed rookies (a minimum of 3 have to be in every squad); so they chose Alcock and Coridas to replace them.

The other rookie is probably Kirkpatrick. Although he played in 4 games in 2009 he was on the park for only 26 minutes this year; so I'm guessing that he can be counted as a rookie for 2010.

Dennis was an injury risk but Beau couldn't have done a lot more. He covered beautifully for Waugh in 2008 when Waugh had his long injury.

As for the others who are no longer with the Tahs (and who replaces them):

4/5 Luke Doherty - Kuyden, Japan (Roodt)
3. Matt Dunning - Force (Lock/6 Jowitt)
11. Lote Tuqiri - Leceister Tigers (Anesi)
15. SNK - Cardiff Blues (Mitchell)
9. Brett Sheehan - Force (Holmes)
13. Matt Cararro - Bath (Sidey)
12/13 Timana Tahu - Eels - (10/12 Barnes)
14. Peter Playford - ? - Squad reduction
15. Batger - ? - Squad reduction

The Tahs were loathe to let Dunning go but we did have one prop too many in 2009 and Tuckie will get a great chance to prove at the Force that he should be kept in the Oz team for the next RWC.

All in all, I would say: given that the squad had to be reduced by two, the Tahs HPU has done a pretty good job on paper - though I would have given Dunning's contract to Beau.

Noddy

I goggled for a while to find the contract periods for the players. Are you sure of your "years" (which make sense). If so; can you advise if you had private info - nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more - or does my goggling need more work?

Incidentally, the Tahs lads have apparently give the nickname of "Dud" to new guy, Roodt.

In the tradition of classic Aussie nicknames...

Jeez I'm looking forward to Dunning re-establishing himself as a premier loosehead over west, or filling in at THP when they need it. He deserves it for his maturity and attitude. And the fact he met me once.
