I'm not sold on Timani. I think we are more in love with the idea of him than the reality. A big bruiser in the Kaino/Kefu mould, who we've been crying out for.

I'm not sure that's Lopeti though. His Super form has been patchy, as has his NRC form. At his best he could work at Test level, but I remain to be convinced he can produce that on a regular basis.

I wouldn't mind if he got 15 minutes off the bench in the next few weeks, so we can get a bit more evidence into the debate.

I tend to agree, but I'm certain the reason he's in the squad is to develop him for that role. That's why he remains in the squad without getting selected and sent back to NRC duties.

All good though, if he gets a start and it doesn't go so well, everyone here can lambaste Cheika for playing him out of position :D

If Cheika wants two playmakers, why pick Foley at 12, he isn't a playmaker. Foley hasn't had a drop off in his form from last year. Foley was completely average last year with one game (vs England at RWC) where he played well above his average. Foley has a been a one hit wonder and there are better options at 12 than him. For the RC stick with the Cooper/Foley combination, but for the EoYT trying a midfield of Cooper, Hodge and Kerevi could yield better dividends.

Or cooper/kerevi/kuridrani
Or cooper/Beale/kerevi
Or cooper/kerevi/folau with hodge at FB.
All would be preferable to the current combination.
I'd make minimal changes for the Pumas/ Boks but I'd love to see Cheika think outside the box for the next ABs game. We know his selections failed in the first 2 games and we've lost the Bledisloe. It's the perfect game to give it a red hot crack with plan B.

I think that's pretty ridiculous actually. Calling the bloke a 'one hit wonder'?? Please.

Let's start with the fact he got the Tahs to a Super final, and played a key role in the victory.

And then he got the Wallabies to a World Cup final, playing high quality, error-free rugby along the way. The notion that he only had one good game is completely misguided. He was good against Wales, he kicked us to a victory against Scotland, he played really well against the Argies, too (that pass to set up AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)'s try is what dreams are made of).

He hasn't been at his best this year, but that shouldn't detract from his past achievements.

FP I know it is conventional wisdom (or Cheika's) that we play two playmakers. But I don't recall any instance last week where the ball went through Foley's hands to Quade out wider. Isn't that what's supposed to happen to give Quade extra room to perform his magic?

I don't think you and I were watching the same game.

I cant be bothered to watch the whole game just to find examples to prove you wrong.

Regardless you'll see it on Saturday.

No. one example in the video I had just watched so refutes his comment that it didn't happen.
It happened multiple times during the test, and to pretty good effect. The problem playing these two at 10/12 is that they are both relatively small. However they were both pretty good in defense and pulled off some excellent tackles. Foley normally does this but I was taken back watching the replay and seeing Quade tackle so well.

I don't think we have much choice ATM than suck it and see. Whom else is there?

Timani just may surprise if surrounded by quality given that he has been around the group for a while and that last year he stated he was sticking around to try and crack the Wallabies.

Foley is doing a reasonable job out of position at 12 whilst we are short of options. He will probably have a good game against the argies and lower ranked teams who are not as good at the rush defence.
But we are playing too many players out of position and he is not a long term no 12.
As with the pooper we need to pick our best 7 and 10. And then not shoehorn another 7 and 10 into the side. I doubt we'll compete with England or the ABs with a 10/12 combo of cooper/foley.
If our goal is top 4 in the world then fine.
But if we want to challenge the top sides then we need a back line rhat is defensively sound with more attacking threats. The argies managed to score more tries against NZ than we did across 2 games. And against the Saffers as well.
Cooper showed enough to persist with him at 10. Cooper and hodge made a massive difference to our exit strategies which have always been a weakness. For the first time in ages we managed to win a game without scoring more tries, because we didn't get pinned in our own half until we gave away a penalty.
But in the long term we need to pick a 12 that offers more. Kerevi, hodge or Beale come to mind.
Foley would still give us exceptional bench cover.

That's what I'm wanting as well. Many examples of fair and promising players at Super level raising their capabilities when surrounded by test standard players, eg, Coleman, Hodge, Kerevi just recently.

Certainly, Foley was first receiver on a number of occasions but as I said above I don't think the ball went from Foley to Quade at all. But it certainly went through Quade's hands to an outside player (usually Kerevi) in space. I still want to see Quade/Kerevi at 10/12. Think with a bit of time under their belts, we could put the notion of two playmakers to bed for some time.

It isn't always about Foley passing to Cooper, it is about them being able to slot in when one is in the ruck or on the right when the opportunity is on the left.

We have seen both of them, when under pressure and alone, get deeper to give themselves more time as the opposition defenders fly at them when they need to be flatter.

In the one above, as the phase broke down, Foley was cleaning out and Cooper was there out wider in the next phase but the theory holds, it creates doubt in defenders and that gives both move opportunities.

Looks like those predicting minimal change are going to be right, Wayne Smith reporting that Robertson will be the only debutante this week, Lopeti not there yet. No indication of whether there will be other 'tweaks'.

I know this is left field but wondering if that Onehunga dude longer term (read much longer term) could be a potential 8 from a longer term perspective. As use to play wing and now playing 8/lock for Spirit and think he has development contract with Force. As got some bulk, speed and defensively seems quite solid and ability to hit the gain line.

Again a 1-2 year project but just wondering whether he might have some longer term potential based on what I have seen. First step of course would be just making Force starting side and even that probably some time away.
