Everyone highlights so many things that went wrong with our RWC, but the biggest factors were surely that our 10, Quade Cooper played terribly, and our 9, Will Genia was way down on form after being one of our best couple of players during the year.

When your key playmakers are playing poorly, I'd suggest that it is very hard to beat the best teams, regardless of what your gameplan is.

Let's not start this again please. Create your own thread if you desperately want to rehash this shit for the 89th time.

I was thinking last night about what it would mean for Australian Rugby as a whole to have another repeat of the Samoa disgrace. I think the true Wallabies fans will still have interest in the game no matter what but I am not so sure about other fans.

Are we better as a game playing our "A" squad and having no doubt we will beat Scotland, and then risk losing to a better team, Wales?
If we lose to Scotland then the team will get attacked from every angle possible, but a loss to Wales would be forgivable as they are a quality side.

If we can only win one game which is the better for the game as a whole?

An interesting thought and perhaps a crucial one in the shift in Deans' thinking around Force-Reds players only.

I think we need to go in with the mindset that we have to win both games.

Selection issues are difficult because our A team for Scotland isn't necessarily our best 22 players. Something must be said for players who haven't played on that weekend and are fresh on the Tuesday and have had more time to train as a team.

It also has to be considered that if people play on the Tuesday (particularly forwards) then they might not be in the best shape to play on the Saturday against Wales.

I think the best balance will come from using players like Higginbotham, McCalman, Slipper, Sharpe and Simmons against Scotland and Dennis, Palu Robinson, Pyle, Douglas or Timani, and Kepu against Wales. If we start Stephen Moore against Scotland and have Saia Fainga'a on the bench then maybe TPN starts against Wales and we have Moore on the bench there.

With the loss of Horwill we will need to be very careful with our forward pack chosen in both tests.
Wasn't it Sharpe and Timani in the 2nd row against Samoa last year?
Moore, Pocock and Robinson will probably have to start both tests if fit. Maybe Sharpie as well.
Douglas, Timani and Pyle could all go well but will need some direction.

The Tahs play on the Saturday night. Robinson playing on the Tuesday then the Saturday will be a big ask.

I think we will be fine with Moore starting against Scotland and TPN starting against Wales. TPN always ends up pretty bruised and battered so he shouldn't play against Scotland at all (Saia can be on the bench).

I think Pocock might be the only forward to start both tests. Simmons is probably a chance due to having the bye before the Scotland test.

Name the best possible 22 for both games, if a player is too sore or injured then select the next best. I hate the idea of resting/naming an already weakened team for a test match. It's the middle of the Super season so the players are as fit as they'll ever be, and they'd be use to short turnarounds from other tourament formats.

If we look at Scotland's recent track record in Europe, in their conditions, it's a shocker.

Samoa had many good players who'd played little together when they beat us. Scotland have few really good players, who mostly play together.

Even with a de facto Australia A, if we can't beat Scotland here at home FFS, it's an unthinkable disaster.

With Samoa, we appeared to have zero game plan and a lucky dip style of team selection. Surely we'll learn from that and do much better next week. I am hopeful the newly upgraded support coaches will help RD improve Wallaby performance this year - poor and too few specialist support coaches were Robbie's biggest failure as head coach in his first 4-year era.

Blaming McCalman for Mowen not getting picked is also grossly unfair on McCalman.

Given the backrow options and the Tahs playing on the Saturday night, I'd be very surprised if we don't see McCalman and Higginbotham in the starting XV for the Scotland game.

There's the problem... McCalman hasn't been one of the top 6's or 8's all year...
