Wallabies 2025

Well perhaps it shows how important the press over here think it is, a bit more speculation on who gets Wallaby job isn't really high on a lot of people's priorities, so probably waiting until no other rugby news. I must admit I interested but in general, don't think it really most over here are.

How good was Cheika's run with Argentina?

Obviously their first ever win in NZ was a big deal, but still an outlier to the rest of Argentina's results while he was in charge.

They finished fourth in the RWC, but due to the uneven nature of the draw had one of the easiest runs with their only games against the top opposition being two losses to England, and being spanked by NZ in the semi final.

I don't know if Cheika really improved the team much from the final two years under Ledesma, and so far Contemponi has had as good, possibly better results with them in his first season in charge including another win in NZ, and their first win against the Boks in six years.

So the 3 rumoured candidates with runs on the board for actually winning a trophy are;
- Cheika
- O'Gara
- McDonald

Followed by the 3 Australian Super Rugby coaches who haven't won a major trophy:
- McKellar
- Larkham
- Kiss

I believe they said McDonald was not being considered when they announced his role at the Force. Realistically it is O'Gara and Cheika.
Cheika has grown from the run it at all costs coach and his players love him. O'Gara sounds like a hard task master who gets the best out of his players, having learnt a lot form JS.
The question is can we go back to Cheika?

He certainly improved them from Ledesma, who had a 24% win rate and oversaw a winless Rugby Championship in 2021, along with leaving a very unhappy playing group

Cheika was tasked with rebuilding them into a good team for Contepomi to take over. That was always the plan and he achieved that in a relatively short time

Yeah, I have Eddie 2.0 vibes about Cheika... although with probably better initial results followed by tears.

O'Gara has a better recent resume, but obviously this would be his first international gig.

Reappointing a previous head coach that got let go after it all ended in tears.
Apples and Oranges. Eddie was coming off being sacked by England while Cheika is one of the most wanted coaches around and hasn't been sacked by anyone since his Wallabies time

Eddie failed because he wasn't good enough, and make panic decisions that backfired royally. It had nothing to do with him previouslt being Wallabies coach a generation before. By that logic, O'Gara should be off the table as we have had coaches with no international expertise like Rennie or McKenzie fail

It really doesn't feel that way to me.

Wouldn't open that McKenzie basket personally.
