Wallabies 2025

Mr Pilfer

Is there a possibility that Waugh is meeting with Cheika to negotiate him taking over coaching the tahs so McKellar can coach the wallabies? Could also apply to reds or Brumbies in a similar way but you would assume Cheika wants to move back to Sydney

Gatland's in good company losing in SAf with the BILs in 2021. The only winning BL/BILs in SAf were 1891, 1896, 1974 and 1997. Nine other BL/BIL tour parties lost.

I don't want Chieka at the Reds.

We talk about there never being any coaching pathways and in the event one opens up for the next generation of coaches to have an opportunity we give it to a guy at the tail end of his career who should not be a HC?

Zane Hilton on paper should be the next in line when Les isn't here, not some Randwick man baby who can't control his tongue or anger. While the Reds are posting a profit, that'd turn quite quickly with how often they need to by new headsets or replace broken glass at Suncorp.

So if none of the Super Coaches are qualified enough, and the most qualified coach available in Cheika isn't inspiring enough, who exactly do you guys think should be the next coach?
Ronan O'Gara or Vern Cotter?

Its always one step forward and one step back with these blokes. Although, in Waugh's defence, at least this isn't a 'captains call'.

What it does (or should do) is put them on the same level. One ought to not be favoured simply because he has background with the current but soon to be departed national coach.
Not saying he should be. I initially tossed up his name as an option and his relationship with Horne and Schmidt was a positive. I was then questioned on his head coaching credentials, to which I responded that three of the other options haven’t won anything either.

I think in the absence of a standout international candidate, you think about continuity. How can we keep the Schmidt infrastructure in place (assistants, high performance etc), while just changing the bloke at the top?

That's where the local candidates come in. None of them are inspiring but their strength is the ability to take the controls of a plane that's flying pretty well, and hopefully maintaining the course.

I'd worry with a ROG or Cotter we're back to finding new assistants and rebuilding the whole setup for the fourth time in as many years. That's just unsustainable.

I'd argue the opposite (outside of Les who has been a part of the Schmidt camp before).

Larkham and McKellar to date have not thrived in an environment that isn't located in our capital. They are both from a coaching perspective, inexperienced to the point where I don't think they're in a position to continue and build upon what Joe and Co are trying to implement.

Having someone who's been around the block more, especially at an international level should allow them to come into the team, take stock and hopefully only tinker based on what they've seen work before.

I'd be telling ROG or Cotter (or any candidate for that matter) that the current AC's are sticking through to the 27 WC, but the successful person can bring one or two people into the fold.

Happy to be corrected but I believe JS and his entire NZ assistant coaching group are the first Wallabies coaches to be totally FIFO and kept their home bases in NZ.

Not sure how accurate that is, but I was told that by someone at RA over a year ago when they raised with me about not being overly confident that JS would be sticking around for the long term, along with his assistants.

I don't want Cheika at the Wobs at this stage or the Reds, but if we are talking about man babies - doesn't ROG have a bit of a temper? I seem to recall seeing a statistic that he's been the most sanctioned coach in the history of Top 14 due to his outbursts.

There was word that at least two of Schmidt's assistants were also departing this year, and there's no guarantees that they'll want to work with the incoming coach, or vice versa, so I say they pick the best candidate for head coach first and then worry about assistants afterwards.
