Wallabies 2024

Happy to see Tupou there and looking like he is training and not in some sort of Rebab group. Really need him fit and firing.
About that...

Fellow Waratahs playmaker Lalakai Foketi was also involved in the session, whilst prop Taniela Tupou did not take part in the final drills of the morning session as he manages a knee niggle picked up early in the second Bledisloe.

Yep. Reds and Force are in the same camp on Wed/Thurs I think.

This isn't a Wallaby squad. It's a Players of National Interest training camp

The Brumbies and Tahs players are currently training in Canberra, with the Reds and Force contingent to meet up in a separate camp in Brisbane.

Playing jackal at a ruck? Nah…nice to have, but not a core competency that should outweigh other attributes of back play
Go and tell the French that Danty is their No. 1 jackler. All the tier 1 teams understand that the game is too quick to allow backs to ignore the opportunity to jackle if the opportunity is there.

If the rest of their skillset is lesser than the alternatives, you aren't choosing a 12 because they can jackle - as Adam said, it's a nice to have and a point of distinction amongst similarly-rated peers

That's an oversimplification; Danty is much more than just a jackler

no one said 'ignore' it, just not prioritised as a primary skillset for selection over aspects of back play...

yep...

It's a great attribute to have 'on top' of those other core back skills required to play centre, but no tier 1 team is picking a centre just because he can jackle, they still need someone with the right mix of passing/ball-running/kicking/tackling attributes expected of a centre.

It would come down to game plan right?

If your defence was built around trying to isolate a ball carrier from their support - then having wide defenders (presumably backs) who could jackal suddenly becomes pretty desirable

Sure, but as a secondary skillset you are going to need to be so much better at it than the player who is better at the core skills of the position for it to win you selection.

I don't think Stewart is close to being that good as a pilferer.

Maybe not the place but might be of interest.
New Zealand referee Ben O'Keeffe will be in control of the England-Australia game on November 9 at Twickenham, with Paul Williams as one of the assistant referees and Glenn Newman as the TMO.

Let's not be obtuse, by assuming that Jackling is their main attribute. I was calling you out on the assumption that Jackling by backs is optional.

No it's not a 'nice to have' it is a critical part of all player's skill sets these days. Amazed you guys don't know this.

That assumption was never made...
The suggest was that key competencies like passing/tackling/kicking/ball-running are still the core skillsets of a back/centre, and skills like 'jackling' add to this and make a player more well rounded.

We still need players to do the fundamentals right, just because Stewart can jackle doesn't mean his other deficiencies in those core skillsets should be overlooked.

Agree BH but we need to put some focus on this aspect as we are poor at it. Schmidt may already be working on this area but I haven't noticed it so far.

Yes and No, yes they needs those base skills which we are not great at ATT. No - jackling is not an optional skill it needs to be a part of all Wallaby player's skill set.

so are you saying jackling is more critical than passing, tackling, ball-running or kicking for a back? because that's what this discussion is.
