Hey man...if you think winning 5 games out of 14 (a result that was celebrated as the best ever in their 13-odd years) is great achievement then I'm not the one with NFI.
And players SHOULD leave. If you are not good enough to secure a good contract in Australia then you aren't good enough. No-one promised that Australia would immediately have 4 strong teams. Just like all 5 franchises didn't turn to shit immediately after the Rebels were formed.
The issues
@Rebel man refuses to acknowledge is that the Rebels were
shit. Both in their on-field results and in their off-field finances and management. No - you don't have the depth and quality for 5 teams, as a lot of rugby people have said for a while now.
Before the Rebels, were there no rugby players from VIC? Will there be no more rugby at all in Victoria now that there are no Rebels? Did rugby in VIC begin and end with their Super Rugby inclusion?
The reality is that rugby union will always face competition in Australia. Simply having a team in Melbourne certainly didn't stop the NRL from continuing to look for and identify talent there. Just like it didn't stop the AFL from putting teams in Sydney despite the existence of the Waratahs. Nor did the Brisbane Lions stop the Reds from winning a Super Rugby title.
And where exactly are all these numbers of VIC-grown rugby stars? Are there really 'huge numbers'? How many were in the Wallaby team on Saturday?
Reducing your footprint can certainly lead to success when that footprint is synonymous with losing and failure.
