Super Rugby Pacific 2025

The opportunity and potential to increase revenue over the next few years with less players to spend it on is only good news then for players and RA's ability to keep them here...
Increase revenue how? They have less teams and less content to sell. Cutting the rebels may help the profitability or help reduce the games losses year on year but losing a team doesn’t increase the revenue

Not all content is equal.

Watching less Australian teams play better rugby and win more is better than watching more teams lose all the time.

Australia has the Lions and RWC and who know what else is in the pipeline content-wise with the Rugby Championship getting a but of a re-jig over the coming years.

The Rebels did not add to either quality content or quality and depth of player base on a consistent basis.

What is short-term about it?

Are there plans to bring back the Rebels in the next 2 years?? LOL
Because the players will leave when their contracts are up. We saw this exact scenario play out with the Force. How will it be different this time around?

They promised when the Force was cut we would have 4 strong Australian sides competing in Super Rugby and that never eventuated.

The issues our good mate @Bullrush is blissfully unaware of are:

While they say we don’t have the depth for 5 teams yet we cut the team that produces the third most amount of talent there are a huge amount of Victorians playing at an international or test level. As the rebels are disbanding the Storm is rapidly investing in the grassroots and it is decimating the junior comps here.

Where are we going to get this talent from? While from the outside looking in the Force look to be doing a good job with their pathway and huge respect to all those in WA with their boots on the ground doing the work. How is that going to hold up when the Western Bears are officially announced and they start pouring money into RL?

Or the Brumbies who are a franchise that have historically recruited really well and developed that talent over developing their own who face the growing threat of the AFL launching team 20 in their city.

Or are we simply going to fall back on NSW and Qld? Where league is dominate and the AFL academies make steady inroads each year?

Reducing the footprint of the game is not going to lead to success

Increase in revenue is from Lions, Nations Cup and World Cup.

Any potential Super Rugby revenue is a rounding error compared to these

I have no doubt we have the talent for 5 teams - we absolutely do. What we don't have is the money to keep them in Australia. We have more Super rugby players playing overseas or in the NRL than we have in Australia...
Always wondered what increasing the salary cap by say $1 million would do to quality of our teams...

Hey man...if you think winning 5 games out of 14 (a result that was celebrated as the best ever in their 13-odd years) is great achievement then I'm not the one with NFI.

And players SHOULD leave. If you are not good enough to secure a good contract in Australia then you aren't good enough. No-one promised that Australia would immediately have 4 strong teams. Just like all 5 franchises didn't turn to shit immediately after the Rebels were formed.

The issues @Rebel man refuses to acknowledge is that the Rebels were shit. Both in their on-field results and in their off-field finances and management. No - you don't have the depth and quality for 5 teams, as a lot of rugby people have said for a while now.

Before the Rebels, were there no rugby players from VIC? Will there be no more rugby at all in Victoria now that there are no Rebels? Did rugby in VIC begin and end with their Super Rugby inclusion?

The reality is that rugby union will always face competition in Australia. Simply having a team in Melbourne certainly didn't stop the NRL from continuing to look for and identify talent there. Just like it didn't stop the AFL from putting teams in Sydney despite the existence of the Waratahs. Nor did the Brisbane Lions stop the Reds from winning a Super Rugby title.

And where exactly are all these numbers of VIC-grown rugby stars? Are there really 'huge numbers'? How many were in the Wallaby team on Saturday?

Reducing your footprint can certainly lead to success when that footprint is synonymous with losing and failure.

Whatever on field and managerial issues plagued the Rebels, there's no doubt that the presence of the team improved pathways which lead to a sizeable increase in professional rugby players out of Victoria that went on to represent the Rebels and Wallabies, including the three in the team last Saturday such as the current John Eales medalist.

I'm not sure what, if any talent the NRL have taken out of the area though... but that whole paragraph of yours didn't really make much sense.

Wow you are moronic. What do you know about Melbourne fuck all.

There were 3 on the weekend, 4 have played this year. That’s not with standing capped wallabies that haven’t got a look in due to fitness or the fact they are going overseas. Also there is a real likelihood in a few years there will be 3 Melbourne boys in Scotland’s starting 15.

Before the Rebels the Storm had no interest in juniors as they had their zone on the Sunny Coast. Personally as a kid I consider playing league but it just wasn’t an option as there were so few junior clubs and the few were all in the West. Now grassroots league participation is out stripping union. There has been millions spent on a centre of excellence for the Storm to house all their academy sides. New league clubs are popping up every year while the union clubs are starting to struggle for players.

With 20 NRL teams and 20 AFL teams on the horizon we are facing increased competition for talent. It’s not that long ago that I was at an AFL game and in the AFL members I was sitting near a schoolboy team from Sydney that use to be a rugby school.

You bloody kiwis keep your head in the sand and can’t see the issues.

I also never said that the season the rebels had was good just that it was good in comparison to the Tahs

So by 'huge numbers' we are talking about 3 in a Wallaby team on Saturday. With the John Eales Medalist having played almost all of his entire career in Canberra - which any Melbourne player can still do....if they are good enough.

And without the Rebels academy developing him he wouldn’t have been signed
