The reinstatement of the SRU as managers of the Shute Shield occurred at the instigation of the presidents of the participating clubs. Thanks for the information Knuckles..............
SRU. what is it that they have achieved again???? They are a rabble and as soon as the clubs wake up, grow some balls and get together the SRU should be disbanded and laid to rest forever........IMO
Having some friends in the inner sanctum of NSWRU I am reliably informed that this position has come about because of a number of reasons.
These being
NSWRU and more importantly SRU have been unsuccessful in securing a major sponsor for the competition. As such, there is NO money to pay for the role and have called for an intern to get the job done for free. The splitting of the business will be their biggest downfall.
- The splitting of the company into a professional arm (Waratahs Inc) and community arm (NSWRU)
- The appointment of a certain employee at ARU who has friends in high places
- the removal of the previous Media Manager, by the professional arm to make way for the wife of the employee in point 2 (note, the previous guy was very good in supporting the clubs etc)
- the wife of the ARU employee telling Waratahs Inc Shute Shield is not part of professional arm and as such she will not be doing any media work for the competition
Come on knuckles....jobs for the boys in Australian Rugby? someone's pulling your leg....or youre pulling ours
Has anyone heard any further news regarding the Vikings joining (re-joining?) the Shute Shield. Word around is that they are very keen, and their 'vrugby' academy will form the basis for a squad to play in Sydney.
Whilst I'm all for a team looking for a challenge, one wonders if they actually do alright whether Sydney will allow them to stay. History indicates that this may not be the case.
Guys just a idea that popped in my head and would like others opions on it... So with the sru setting a weird season draw where all teams play each other in the first round I suggest one derby game per round and make that the tv game e.g rd 1 manly v warringah rd 2 randwick v easts rd 3 penrith v parra etc that gets you to round 6 I think then let abc and the powers to be decide from there , at least everyone is assured of a tv appearance prior to the season starting.
NEW Manly Rugby club president David Begg has launched a stinging attack on the Brumbies Super Rugby franchise over the decision to force their Marlins’ recruits to play in the “Micky Mouse” Canberra competition this season.
The controversial edict, which Begg describes as a “joke”, means that the Manly ranks will be stripped of half a dozen of their stars.
Instead of returning to their Sydney clubs when the Super Rugby commitments are completed, the players will be farmed out to Canberra outfits.
“We are extremely unhappy,” Begg told the Manly Daily.
“It is clearly detrimental to the Sydney club rugby competition, but more importantly it is detrimental to the development of these players.
“Every time a player plays a game I would have thought it was important that he play at the best level he can - in my view the standard in Perth is better.
“The standard of club rugby in Canberra is no better than Kentwell Cup.”
The ruling means Manly will lose Michael Hooper, Andrew Smith, Robbie Coleman, Anthony Hegarty, Dylan Sigg and Jono Owen.
“We know where they want to play and none of them want to play in Canberra,” Begg said.
The new president said backrower Hooper did all of his development as a Manly junior.
“For (coach) Jake White and the Brumbies now to tell him once your Super Rugby commitments are completed that he has to go and play in some Micky Mouse competition for some club that he has absolutely no affinity to at all is, quite frankly, a joke,” Begg said.
“The Brumbies have the gall to tell Sydney clubs what they can and can’t do when they can’t even secure a front-of-jersey sponsor.”
Begg said Manly will do all in their power to get the “inane” decision reviewed.
Manly will look to Sydney RU to argue their case with ARU, Begg said.
“If they don’t, we will do it ourselves.”
A few words from Manly on the Brumbies not allowing their players to play in Sydney

if Manly pay them what the Brumbies are paying them, then they can tell them where to play.
