Genia debuted off the bench in the first game of the 2007 Super 14. Nick Berry was the starting 9 and we beat the Canes in an upset (with Hugh McMeniman being sensational as I recall).

Genia's first start was later that year when we were smashed by the Force in WA with Berry on the bench. Berry started the rest of the year.

Come 2008 and Sam Cordingly started the season at 9 with Will on the bench. Cords got injured in game 2 and then Will started v Brumbies in Canberra with Lucas making his debut off the bench. Remembering that Lucas was playing fly half for the Bank at the time and had starred for them in their 2007 Grand Final campaign and apparently John Connolly considered picking him about Berrick Barnes as the back up flyhalf for the World Cup.

Lucas finished the 2008 season as the starting 9 with Will on the bench (and Cinderalla injured).

I don't agree with moving QC (Quade Cooper) out to 12, when he has been going so well this year at 10. In saying that I suspect he will spend a lot of time a first receiver. I would have been tempted to bring Chambers into 12 and Turinui to 13. Or just Morgan straight into 12.

I agree, I guess I was going what's been talked about in the press.

My preference would be Benny Tapuai starting at 12 with Quade at 10.

As much as everyone seems to be debating the merits of a Genia-Lucas-Cooper combo, I don't think the players numbers will have as much impact as people are thinking they will. Genia seemed to play more as a league half-back last week and so I reckon all three (obviously Cooper can't play 9) will be switching it around like Gits and Barnes for the Wallabies..

Ben Lucas, Peter Hynes, Will Chambers, Ben Tapuai, Digby Ioane, Quade Cooper, Will Genia (c), Leroy Houston, Jake Schatz, Scott Higginbotham, Van Humphries (vc), Radike Samo, Greg Holmes, Sean Hardman, James Slipper. Reserves: James Hanson, Jack Kennedy, Ezra Taylor, Poutasi Luafutu, Ed Quirk, Brando Va’aulu, Richard Kingi.

Luke Morahan on the nose? Lucas at fullback selected above him on the wing?

Tasi's first game for the Reds for a while and still no Morgan T.

Wow. This will all be interesting to watch.

Well it looks as though the 5/8 development process via the fullback spot is being used again. While as Va'aulu has been less than impressive over the last 3 years I am very surprised that Morahan did not get his spot.

Not surprising with all the injuries the front row looks very underdone and will be targeted again. No Morgan T is no surprise at all.

Is Morahan signed on for next year? I think they'll lose him if he isn't. I think he's better than what the selections have represented.

yeah I think we do have him signed for another year. Although we've just signed Dominic Shipperley and Kimani Sitauti.

Still no specialist fullback though.

He hasn't shown it, looks lazy off the ball and needs to develop a better work ethic

Good to see Hanson on the bench. I also really hope that Quirk gets at least 20min of game time.

It brings me to tears of frustration that Brando keeps getting selected over Morahan. Morahan has all the attributes to be a complete winger, Brando has the all the attributes of a bloke with a '4 and 20' in the crowd.

Other than that, it will be very interesting to see how this experimental line up goes. Kennedy's development is not as prominent as we had hoped, so it will be interesting to see how slipper for for 50 minutes.

Lucas at fullback will be interesting ---> perhaps planning for next year, when as suspected Hynes leaves.

Tapuai & Quirk. Watch this space.

What I thought was very surprising was Tasi getting a run. It will be very interesting to see which backrowers are given the chop at the end of the year.

What has been the go this year with Tasi.

Has he not been putting the effort in?
Has he been injured?

He was looking like a good prospect and then he faded. Any of you Brisbane based blokes know the deal?

truth be told he was never that good to begin with.

He got a run in 08 I think it was, almost solely based on the fact that he was one of the only mature players in the academy ready for footy. He had a good game in his debut against the Bulls, when Crofty was dropped and snagged a two year contract out of that. We don't have room for him in our squad in my opinion.

Also in regards to Lucas at fullback, i think what Link is trying to do there is create a playmaker alternative to Cooper. In the past two games against the Hurricanes and Brumbies, Cooper has been targetted in attack and defence to remove him from the game. Its worked quite well, the Reds dont have any other playmakers in the backline, they are practically all finishers.

Has Lucas been stung by a bee?
