Reds 2023

On rugby heaven - Horan and Horwill talking as though Thorn finishing at the end of the season is a sure bet

I am at best ambivalent on Thorn closing out. In contrast to this, I'm hoping we can see some respect and recognition for his contribution. Don't forget the revolving doors through to co interim head coach scenario between Link and Thorn. Brad has definitely seen stability return the club. As others have said, unless the guy is looking to develop (maybe overseas) the Reds should be looking to how to retain the guy in another position. Thorn has plenty to offer.

Agree QLD has seen far too much talent (players and coaches) leave the operation. If we could work out a way to keep them all the FRANCHISE would be world beaters.

I've just watched the first half against Canes cause I missed it. It was a good contest. The problem maybe is the stamina in the second half and obviously the depth.

On the other hand, I saw some offloading in 50/50 situations. You should play safe against a superior rival

Some pretty juicy, anti-previous administration comments in here:

“Every interview (with Rennie) was just based on speed, speed, speed,” he told AAP on Friday.

“It put pressure on me; I started getting my technique wrong and I kept pulling my hamstring.

“I struggled mentally, dealing with serious back-to-back injuries for the first time, I didn’t have confidence getting back and running full speed.

“I’ve never been that guy, I never hit top speed until game day … I’d been focused too much on trying to get my speed back, I forgot about the footy.

“Now that’s behind me … I just want the footy in my hands again.”

The 27-year-old was honest when asked if he’d fallen out of love with the sport since the move to Ballymore.

“I was feeling like that in (Wallabies) camp. All I could see was that next week I would be holding pads again (and not playing) and I know some of the other Reds boys felt the same,” he said.

“We felt if we weren’t playing we’d rather come back and play club footy.

This has been prevalent for a number of years in Australian Rugby. Players attempt to do things that are not within their skillset because they want to be considered "an x factor" player.

An "x factor" player is someone who cannot be relied upon to build a structured game plan to beat well drilled opponents.

“I have to put in work to get him to pick me."

But just not put in the work at training? Is it just turn up on game day and play?

That whole article is confusing tbh.

His performances for Reds in Japan looked like he'd just come across from volleyball - How'd that happen?

He got player of the match that game.

He was completely lost any time someone ran near him with the ball!!!!!
Defensively he has looked lost every game I felt. I can't understand how the Reds coaches haven't been working on his defensive positioning, opposition teams will target that and that puts pressure on other players to cover him.

Well, I guess there's no excuses now. Rennie's gone. New assistant coaches etc.

It's an interesting insight into his perspective (and apparently a number of the other Reds players) towards training. Could be just a slightly different meaning, or just soundbites I suppose. I dunno if there is any clear evidence in how the Reds play that might indicate that they aren't training the skills of the game to a high standard - like maybe obscene penalty counts or repeatedly poor execution during game day

Forget about the training, Rip in on game day and kill it, guys.

The Broncos beating the reigning premiers in the first game of the season in their own fortress doesn’t help the Reds with their bandwagon fans.

Will need a big win this weekend to keep them relevant.
I opened up a courier mail for the first time in years this morning. 8 pages of league, 1 page AFL, season not started, half page of soccer, 2 pages cricket. Not one mention of rugby. FFS basketball even had a quarter of a page. How does that get the casual fan engaged?

Attended a function last night where there happened to be around a dozen former Reds/Wallabies in attendance, including a few who currently pop up in the media occasionally to talk rugby, Moore, Horwill and Sharpe to name a few.

As the night went on and golds turned to heavies and heavies turned to red the chat got more pointed about rugby. I won’t go into detail about some of the chats, but I found it interesting there seemed to be lots of support for Thorn staying on. Mostly the argument was based around ‘if not Thorn, then who?’.

As can probably be expected of ‘the good old boys’ a lot of the discussion around players leaving and having limited development past their debut seasons was levelled at the players limiting themselves.

It does sound like Heenan has the support of the playing group and the old heads though, so if there is a change in management, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him thrown into the ring earlier than expected.

The Reds identification system is broken. Thorn can only coach the cattle that the Reds think are good enough to be in the squad but as stated before, the process is lazy and the ID pool is narrow.
If you are predominantly relying on local talent, then the ID system has to be better.

The u18/20 academy needs to be playing regular local matches against “possibles” but they aren’t allowed because of the reliance on private schools who ID the players when they’re 13-14 or younger and then the Academy relies on that filter to hold up post school.

Unfortunately, the players who excel at school don’t always go on. This is where other talent needs to be identified. Some classic cases currently in Reds squad who are junior wallabies - how many years will they get before they’re off overseas or to another franchise because the Reds got it wrong?

The other challenge is the amount of QLD private schools talent that is going interstate for an opportunity. The list is very long.

Agreed, been like that for a long time. You would think that the Reds would be pushing media releases etc to the CM. They will write in depth about NRL games not involving any Qld teams but not even write up that the Reds are playing. I would be interested to know if the QRU just get no engagement from Courier Mail or are they not promoting the game to them?

The QRU do send out media releases to the CM.

Taniela will be down in Melbourne for Super Round along with 80% of the contracted players so hopefully people don't take that as 'he's already at the Rebels!'
Not sitting with the team - early defection confirmed!!!
