Reds 2023

Sir Charles

Fred Wood (13)
Is there a benefit having 3 x Wallabies THs at the same club, Sam, Nella, Pone?

I guess the assumption is Pone will move on as I am sure Sam is on a 2yr deal - I wouldnt be surprised to see Pone leave New Stars for The Agents to give him an opportunity at the Reds for 2024, or stay with New Stars and head overseas chasing the $$$.

Seems to work for the Brumbies pretty well.

1 Wallaby and two very fringe Wallabies

Oh I agree - no harm in releasing him (and I don't really blame Thorn is this is what has been done). And it makes sense, once you've given notice how productive are you in your workplace anyway :D

Professional sport is different in that your intent to leave is know much sooner than in the corporate world.....
Unless he's started packing, he'll probably be in Queensland for a bit longer. But, imagine trading a Queensland Winter for a Victorian one.

Depressing stuff that. Normally the southerners can't wait to escape north.

A release is fine if that's what he's asked for, but there's no way he should be heading down to Melbourne early if the Reds are still paying his salary.

WC would have finished. So a year or two chasing $$$

I really don't think the Reds can compete for a world class prop against France and Japan

This is a tough competition and it is unreasonable to expect we would be finals contenders every year. What is reasonable to expect though is development of a playing group. We have a core group of players from his previous roles which is deflating slowly and not really progressing to higher honours because of perceived (and likely real) deficiencies for a level above their current job.
75% of teams make the finals. If anything it's the bare minimum that should be tolerated for a team with resources like the Reds.

Yeah, if Thorn has decided he's done at the end of the season (which a lot of the commentary is suggesting) I can't see them sacking him before then. They'll take their time with the next appointment while hoping for a positive to kick to send Thorn out on some sort of winner.

If he decides he wants an extension and the Reds aren't interested it might go a little differently, but that would be more likely to be Thorn than choosing to leave early than anything else.

I'm sure they will make a decision soon enough though as it will have an impact of recruitment and retention. It will leak out once a player agent is given an indication.

From a competitive standpoint I wouldn't release him if he is going to be in Melbourne the next day though. As petty as it can come across why help a team you are in competition with in any way whether it be tactically or commercially. If the Rebels did want him now, they have to pick up this years salary.

Different story if they cut a deal with Rugby Australia to have them manage his rehab and training once fit which is the avenue I hope is happening.

The blokes down at Brothers seem to think he will do a lot of his rehab at the clubhouse (he's already been there several times) and is a decent chance of playing some games for them at the back end of the year in preparation for a professional return.

Taniela will be down in Melbourne for Super Round along with 80% of the contracted players so hopefully people don't take that as 'he's already at the Rebels!'

Hope he does. I think he will definitely need to game time to be any chance of being effective at the RWC.

He's a commercially valuable players to have at Super Round. As long as he's not testing out that Rebels KFC sponsorship too much.

He and a few of the other piggies gave KaiKai Chicken in Saint Lucia a red hot go last week. Bloody good chicken there, so can’t blame them
