But perhaps you penned this here more for sly amusement than genuine conjecture. Indeed, so I would hope.
No genuine interest this time. Just casting the net to the "second tier" of coaches around the place. There are some rather well qualified (on paper) Aust based coaches around the show, particularly in the Schoolboy system.

Crusaders have just appointed Scott Robinson from the NZL U20's as their new HC. Why not us?

David Nucifora, whom many on the forum have issues with, had been the previous HPU boss and U20 Coach. Prior to that he was a Super Rugby Head Coach at two clubs. Setting aside the judgements as to Nuci's competency for those roles, someone who has the ability to be a National U20 HC seems to tick the boxes for being a Super Rugby Club HC.

From the schoolboy system, Steve Philpotts (another Qld based person) had been in charge of Aust Schoolboys for a fair period, and with a degree of success. Is he ready to give teaching up and move to the pro coaching ranks? Maybe not straight into HC, but perhaps an assistant or specialist coaching role in Redland.

Plenty of top coaches world wide have come from the teaching profession, I.e. Sir Henry Graham from NZL.

Simply being the 20's coach is not an indicator that someone is of the standard to coach a Super footy.
They need to succeed at that level.
Big difference.

Scott Robinson's U20 team lost to Aus for the first time ever, and finished in their lowest ever position (5th) at Under 20 World Champs this year, in doing so became the first ever NZL team to lose a fixture to the Irish since Billy Webb-Ellis picked a ball up and ran with it.

It is not all about success on the field. Sometimes the other mob are simply better on an individual and team basis, and all the coaching in the world won't make a difference.

Why are the Reds looking at NRL players that don't have the rugby union type game sense, they can run a ball and they tackle around the shoulders. We need players that have flare and are unpredictable, like offloading in a tackle, tackle one on one, run backup lines and think on their feet. Players that have grown up playing rugby. Has Nabuli given the Reds the confidence that the NRL is where we should be looking?

Scott Robinson earned his position as the New Zealand U20s from his time as head coach of Canterbury, that was the major factor in his promotion to HC of Crusaders, not the JWC gig.

If Australian Rugby were serious about the development pathway for coaches, then someone like Nic Stiles should have been appointed HC of Australia's U20s team, U20s HC should be a reward and the final testing ground before promotion to Head Coach of a Super Rugby team.

David Rennie coached New Zealand U20s for 3 years before his Chiefs gig, at the same time as he was HC of Manawatu in the ITM Cup. Coaches should be like players and have to earn their stripes and prove their ability at NRC and U20's level before promotion to Super Rugby.

So this Guy's poo results with NZ 20's warrant him being appointed to be Reds coach?
There's a lack of logic in this thought bubble:)

Hence my suggestion that Thommo should be looking to move up, or ARU should be looking to move him on to free up that spot on "the Pathway" for an up and coming Australian coach (who has had success {not just on the scoreboard} at NRC level). They can earn their stripes here before they look to step up on the pathway towards a gig in Super Rugby.

Having someone in U20's for too long blocks the development of others, and impacts on the depth of our Coaching stocks.

Last word I'll say on that matter on this thread as it is a little off topic. We can develop the fix Australian Rugby's lack of a coordinated coaching pathway on a seperate coaching thread.

Time to get back on the speculation of who will have the reins of Team Red for 2017 and beyond.

Well that rules out most Aussies and the Kiwis we have can't do it either. Are you suggesting we only sign established NZ Super Rugby players or have another idea?

What is flare and unpredictable? X-factor? D Carter doesn't seem to fit either flare or unpredictable in the sense I think you mean and he goes ok.

D Carter has a union background and can read a game quickly and that makes him great something the Reds could do with. Reds backline rugby has been very predictable and slow in attack and defense. Has Nabuli been worth the money? If so great, splash more money and buy an NRL team to play Super Rugby. All I am saying is we should be looking in the union ranks for players. I don't believe in code hopping it does nothing for the game and that goes as far back as GPS schools giving out scholarships to mungo ball players.
End of rant.

The national U20's comp provides a a good testing ground and could be under the 'wing" so to speak of the Super Rugby HC's.

"I'm swaying towards playing in Queensland but I’ve got to make an educated decision,” Cooper said.

“Obviously, who is to coach the Reds is a big thing because you don’t want to make a call on whispers one way or the other.”

“Why hide? Richard is a good person, the effort was there and he did an amazing job as a skills coach when he was at the Wallabies. But head coaching is different,” Cooper said.

“It was just not the right fit and I wasn’t enjoying it.

“I’m 28 and I don’t want to waste another day of my career because of my own doing or someone else.

“I’ve committed to Australian rugby for the next three years and the only gap missing on the piece of paper is ‘Super Rugby club?

On the topic of NRL as opposed to Union: I think it is fair to say that in the case of Nabuli, being a finisher that he is, it is ok to venture into the recruitment of NRL finishers. I think Nabuli has been a great buy for the Reds. I would love to see him get involved more. Keep in mind that Nabuli has always had a Union background and one of the main reasons he came to the Reds was to come back to his native sport of Union. Can't really comment on Maranta - but I think the Reds should invest that money in a quality #10.

I'm not too sure if I'm reading into something that's not there, but Cooper seemed to focus on the 'culture' side of a coach quite a bit. Granted the culture at the Reds has gone down the shitter since Link left, but these two have been around long enough to help direct or instill what they think the culture should be.

Stiles was around in 2014/15 so he should have had a big say in how to shape the culture while MOC has had close to a year to contribute. So, what about them being given the HC role would mean the status quo would change?
Having listened to the eggchaser podcast, culture implementation is apparently Lancaster's sole skill, albeit recent results would suggest otherwise.

The forwards have been the "least worst" part of the Reds, though. The ruck work is average, sure.

But MOC's areas, backs, attack and defence, has been shocking. What was unbelievable was the article(s) saying that MOC was favourite for the head coach job when his areas of responsibility are the worst performing.
I think the Reds have proven that on field performances are not important in deciding on a head coach. RG's reappointment proved this.
