Thats surprising, he seems quite involved for someone who is supposed to be out until May

Yeah. Talked to him again on the weekend & it has responded better than expected. Hoping to play against the Rebels along with JJ, Beau & possibly Chibba.

My biggest concern for the Reds is attack at the moment. The backrow is a superb defensive one with Gill's pilfering ability, Schatz work rate and Quirk's tackling ability but they don't really have an explosive ball runner to get over the gain line and generate the space for their (small) backs to utilize.

In 2011 they had Ioane, Higginbotham, Daley, Horwill, Samo all as big blokes that would move the team up the field.. Daley & Horwill must find form.

If you want an explosive ball runner - Browning. Think he suprised the Chiefs on the weekend, and some of the Reds. Ended up getting himself isolated & losing the ball but gee he made some ground.

Other comments on the game:

Mikey Harris performed well. Played first half (?) at 12 then popped up at 10 when Quade went off. As usual will be an important reserve player to keep fit.

Adian Toua is one of the most exciting prospects I have seen on a rugby field in a while. His hand in the first try was brillant & him and Turner attacking down the right wing in the first half was poetry in motion. Lets hope they can both stay uninjured & in form. Having said that Turner did have some ice on his knee at the end & looked to be limping a bit but hopefully it was just a knock.

Quade seems to have his mojo back. Beautiful to see & I can't see him being displaced from the 10 jersey (red or gold) if he keeps that form going.

Taps looks like he has done some significant work over the off season. He is really trimmed down and looked to be the fittest I have seen him in a couple of years. Lets hope that continues.

The competition for the backrow spots is working a treat. The boys looked like they were all trying to out do the others in all aspects. there were some beautiful cleanouts that I wish I could find footage of. Ed O'Donoghue & Dave McDuling both spent time in the locks & in the backrow. The final mix is going to be interesting but at least we have some back ups here that all appear to be as good as one another.

As mentioned else where it looks like Kerevi has got an ankle injury. He was limping with ice on it at the end of the game but I have seen reports that he is now on crutches & will be out for 6 or so weeks. Bit of a bugger but we will see what happens.

Was talking to Albert Anae after the game and asked him about playing at hooker. He said that he is only there while Chibba is injured and will be moving back to prop when he is back. Possibly this Friday against the Rebels. Good news for Chibba but it does worry me that there is only 2 specialist hookers in the squad. Having said that there are still some spots to be anounced so maybe one of them is a hooker.

Placid had a nervous start. As you would running on in your home town. I hope they handle him carefully and develop him slowly. There is a lot of talent there that has the potiental to be wasted.

Finally, spoke to a few of the boys after & they said that it felt a bit rusty. And yep, it wasn't all as good as the highlights real shows. There were a few passes to no-one & and few times where the support wasn't quite where it should have been. You could tell which boys, particularly in the back line, had been running drills since October and which ones had only got back in January. But, IMHO, it was a better performance than what I was expecting so am happy & excited about the season to come.

Going by the look of the players and the tempo they played at, Ollie Richardson has more then filled the shoes as Strength and Conditioning coach, that was a concern for me when Damian Marsh returned to the Brumbies, he was one of the first recruited by Link and was pivotal in changing the Reds training culture..

Thanks for the summary Suckerforred - a very enjoyable read. I will pick you up on one thing though. I believe Jonah Placid is a Rockhampton boy. His mum and brothers drove down to watch the trial. He did finish school in Toowoomba though. Sorry to nit pick. :)

It seems that RG is looking at Taps as a 13 which has also been Fainga'a's best spot. This has me wondering where CFS fits as it also seems that Harris will have first go at 12. There is already a lot of outside backs but maybe CFS will be looked at as a 11 with Davies, Shipperley, Turner and Toua fighting out other spots. Given the depth there I am not sure that is the best use of his skill. Is there a chance he may be able to switch to 12? It would add some starch and go forward close to Quade and the thought of him close to the tryline in the 10/12 channel has me imagining Folau lite, he'd be damn hard to stop and has good hands.

I'm not sure it's that cut and dry. He could well be looking at Ant F at 12 with Taps at 13. With the playing stocks we have in the backline though this sorts of selection headaches are going to be the norm until we get some injuries. Which is terrific! The selection dramas, not the injuries! ;-)

I reckon this centre pairing (when the two are on song) is one of the best we can field, and both players work incredibly well with Quade, and defend brilliantly together also.

Taps is not a 13 at all. It's just unfortunate that we don't have a genuine 13 other than Sautia which means that we keep playing him there. I think we might lose Taps to another province unless he starts at 12.

In my opinion, he is the best 12 we have by a mile. I would then start either Ant or Sautia at 13 with Harris the obvious utility. Toua at the back. Turner on one wing, and then whomever out of Rodney, Shippers, or Sautia if he is not picked at center.

It sounds like the injury to Ant was (until recently) projected to have kept him out of the comp until nearly May. Given who the other centers in the squad are (and by that I mean largely young and not necessarily ready for a season of Super Rugby) Taps was the most logical choice to trial at 13. I think it's pretty obvious to everyone, likely including Graham, that Taps has played his best rugby at 12. But under the circumstances he'd likely make the best filler at 13, for the time being at least.

Not a clue what the deal is with CFS or where Graham sees him in the Reds organization going forward. I've been calling for him to get more time in 13 since last year but I'm sure there's something going on behind the scenes (other than hamstrings) that is leading to the reality of it.

Taps has played 13 at test level so he is probably the best replacement option.

I personally do not like CFS at 13 now. I seem him lacking a little between the ears at this stage and perhaps better suited to the wing until he gets some more experience under his belt. I consider us to have a stronger midfield without him in it, providing it contains Taps, Harris or Finger.

The fact of the matter is that he is absolutely massive, and just flatly is getting too robust for the wing. He will be able to cause such havoc in the center, not just because of his running game but because of the indecision he will create in the opposition defense.

2012. He started at 13 until McCabe was injured.

What? Taps played 12 that year.

McCabe has never played 13 for Australia either if mmemory serves me, except for a midweek match in Ireland when we were beaten by a club side.

I could easily be wrong here, but I don't remember either of them playing 13 for the wobs. AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is never injured and therefor would have played.

You are allowed to nit pick. Yes he finished his schooling here. There was a large number of supporters in the crowd that knew exactly who he was & where he was the whole time. He still had every right to be nervous. :)

This. CFS is very very young & needs to learn the game a bit more before we start hurling him into a starting 12/13 role. I think wing will be his starting positions for the moment. The boy certainly has some toe.

Tranquility. Yes. McCabe never played 13. Taps did. When McCabe was injured Taps got to play at 12.

Just one more comment. We are all worried about the congestion in the backs with the number of options that we have, particularly in the centres. But let's face it we are only 2 injuries away from thinking 'thank f*ck we have them all on our books'.

From my point of view in the back line the only positions that pick themselves is 9 (Genia) & 10 (Quade). The rest are up for grabs. My guess would be though:

11 Shipperly / Davis
12 Harris (Until ant is back)
13 Taps (Until Ant is back & then he will swap to 12)
14 Turner
15 Toua

With CFS, Lucas & which ever of Davies & Shipperly. I have actually seen Shipperly make a fair fist of playing in the centres so that is also an option. Lots & lots of options, all of which are pretty good.
