The Reds only have 29, there is still 1 position to be filled.

MMM is stil contracted until early next year with his Japanese club..

I looked at the Kubota Spears website & MMM is no longer on their playing roster.

We don't have a marquee do we? Mike Harris was a development player.
I still think we should try and use this spot to pick up a backrower or prop.

Mike Harris was a standard squad member since he qualified for Australia through his grandmother...

Development players are those who intend to qualify for Australia through residency..

Reds have no marquee or development players currently.. The last marquee was Caleb Ralph in 2011 and Daniel Braid prior to that.

just relaying what I read in another article...

I still hold reservations about MMM given his injuries and the game missed back when he was last playing for the Reds

As long as we get him for the right price, I think he could be just the ticket. Mature bodied players are so valuable, especially when on his day he is one of the most damaging players in memory.

Yeah you wouldn't pay top dollar but if he stayed fit he'd definitely be worth it, just thinking back to his time at the Reds and I'm sure he started in 2005 I think 2006/2007 & 2008 were write offs but he played most of 2009 under mooney but did his ankle at training just before contract negotiations started with the ARU and they offered him next to nothing which was fair enough considering he had spent more than half his career injured.
Anyway last photo I saw of him at his Japanese club he looked bigger than ever.

What's everyone's thinking for the final spot?

I think a quality 2nd row is needed. Van had great height and we have great versatility across the backrow. Given the age of both AWH and Samo I think we need another specialist 2nd row option but this could be in the form of an EPS contract.

The other option is another Prop. I know there has been lots of rumour and speculation.

Thoughts anyone?

Prop would be my final position, dont forget that we also have McDuling in the squad

I like the idea of cherry picking a gigantasaurus back rower. Surely there is another Tuilagi about to finish school in Samoa we can grab, like England have done?

Manu is the only Tuilagi playing for England and he's represented them from U16s.

Now I believe the English government tried to deport him for some reason but English rugby has done plenty to make him "English".

God we had a bad season with injuries. Blokes like Jono Lance, Quirky, Toua, Sautia, and McDuling barely got a jog.

Were the best, chuck our the rest.

2013 is in ze bag, in my humble and objective opinion.

Can't wait to see what toua can do this year. He will probably get injured again now that i've said that but...

Yeah without a doubt, but it's just fun to have him on the list I think.
He is a first XV player when fully fit.

An article in The Australian said that Link offered Sam Lane a full contract for 2013 but he is going to sign with NSW on a EPS contract instead for more game time

Well he is behind Berrick Barnes ;)

Yeah it does seem a little silly in that regard, but it also suggested his dad may be involved in the Tahs coaching structure, soo it would seem like the natural choice.

I actually was thinking why no one had picked up tim lane who has always been a pretty adept coach over the years. The commentators on the abc at the weekend were speculating that maybe he would try for head coach! But suggested he wouldnt go down the road of assistant again

I have liked Sam Lane's maturity on-the-field and now I like his maturity off-the-field.

Interesting to give up dollars for opportunity, but that decision will probably serve him well in the future. Yes he can't play unless there is an injury to another 5/8th or inside back but with Berrick's repeated head knocks it is likely that he will get good game time this year.

As a result of this maturity I want Sam to stay at the Reds even more.

His parents live in Sydney don't they? That probably means he isn't giving up too much money by playing in Sydney because he'll be able to live rent free etc.

I know that there are meant to be injuries before the EPS can be used but it seems fairly flexible. If Foley and Barnes were 10/12 or 15/10, Lane could probably be on the bench straight away.

I think Barnes only missed about 2 games in 2012 so he was pretty much available all season.

I would have thought his best opportunity is at the Reds, Quade still hasn't signed any deal with the ARU so he could disappear at anytime. And after that we only have stop gap options at 10 in Harris, Lucas and Lance, all of whom play better at other positions. (possibly with the exception of Lucas, who hasn't had much time at 10 in the last 4 years)
