I was very impressed with Lucas during the ARC, I am surprised that he has not ended up in a starting XV for one of the franchises, he looked good at either 9 or 10, as well as at 15.

Samo struggled to produce in Sydney club last season, he was really off the pace and just did not contribute for long periods, and then would do something magic.

Bench guy at best

He has a full pre season under his belt this year and his workrate when he started against the Canes last year was impressive.

maybe later in the season, but early in the season I remember him getting rave reviews.

Bit of a nothing article, but it does highlight that Link plans to hide QC (Quade Cooper) in defence again, not great news for the Wallabies and the RWC though

The real concern about QC (Quade Cooper) should be his new "management" team.
http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...mundines-manager/story-e6frey4i-1225995126586 there was an article in the courier mail also today saying he had now signed with Mundines team.
I dont know how this will pan out but I get the feeling it will end in dissapointment for Reds fans at some stage

I have a feeling this could be Aidan Toua's year, and I will be very interested in hearing how he plays in the trial. I also hope he gets a run at FB as I think he is a genuine fullback option with a far better kicking game than Rodney

in the few games he played for the Reds at the end of last year he put in quite good performances, granted he was really only good for about 60min a match, that was without a proper pre-season as well.

Dying to see this bloke play for QLD, having heard about him for the last 4 years.

The Reds are getting no shortage of publicity in Cairns, 10'000 might be a realistic crowd.

Currently 35-10 to the Reds according to the team's twitter account. Not sure what kind of team the Cru have got out there though.

Edit: full time 42-15.

From what I can work out from the Reds' facebook page: tries to Samo, Chambers, S Fainga'a, Ioane, Robinson and Harris. Cooper 3/3 conversions, Harris 3/3 conversions.

Horwill leads Reds to trial victory

Updated January 29, 2011 22:21:00

Queensland Reds skipper James Horwill led his side to a 42-15 trial match victory over the Crusaders in his first game since a devastating knee injury ended his 2010 season early.

The 24-Test Wallaby gave a tight performance despite fumbling his first touch of the ball as his side dominated the New Zealanders in Cairns.

Horwill was forced to sit out most of the Reds' 2010 Super 14 season after a round two injury left him needing a knee reconstruction.

In his absence replacement skipper Will Genia led the perennial underachievers to their best season in years, finishing just short of a fairytale finals berth.

His impressive personal performance and skilled leadership led to speculation he may be retained as skipper in 2011 but coach Ewen Mackenzie opted to reinstate the damaging Wallabies forward at the helm.

The Reds' hopes of building on their surprising 2010 performance appeared well founded on Saturday night as the side walked all over the Kiwi powerhouse.

Flanker Radike Samo put the Reds on the board early after crossing the line at the 12 minute mark followed by Will Chambers and then Saia Fainga'a just minutes later.

From there the New Zealanders struggled to get back in the game, although a penalty kick from Flyhalf Tyler Bleyendaal put them on the board before half-time.

The Queenslanders dominated again in the second half with tries to Beau Robinson, Digby Ioane and Mike Harris, although Crusaders flanker George Whitelock and centre Robbie Fruean also crossed for the Kiwis.

The Reds will take on the Brumbies in Darwin next weekend in their final trial match ahead of the start of the Super Rugby season.

McKenzie praised his captain's successful return to the game.

"He had a good impact on the game, his line-out work was impeccable, kick off etc so it was like he hadn't missed a beat," he told reporters.

"I think a lot of people were hoping he'd have a successful comeback and he's done that."

McKenzie was also impressed with the team's new recruits.

"We were pleased with some of the guys we've recruited, they've mixed in well and made a very successful contribution," he said.

It's a Crusaders 'B' selection. But a hitout is a hitout....

There were some stars there like Robbie Fruen, who could have easily on ITM Cup form had Sonny Bill's tour spot.

Canterbury are a region that prides themselves on depth so don't talk down the loss too much.

On Samo and Van The Man: neither are spring chickens but they will have value in different ways.

One could see a scenario whereby Horwill, Simmons and a Humphries/Samo combo rotate throughout the season. Humphries could be on the bench one week and step in for Horwill as TH lock, and another week Samo could step in for Simmons on the LH side, or Higginbotham at 6.

Every now and then Simmons could get a game off from starting, or maybe even sit in the stands, but you'd always want the captain to start.

On Samo's performances in the Shute Shield: it had a lot of value but it was eccentric, as is his wont. He's the type of guy I'd like to use to help chase a game or put a team down and out for the count. As much as is possible I'd use Van in grinding out type games.

These generalisations are full of objections, I know.

On the trial win:

Link said there were no major injuries out of the game and he expects to have his 7's contingent back for next week's match, that would be Tevita Kuridrani and Johno Lance
