some similarities are starting to emerge between the training gear and the Crusaders gear, $10 says in 2012 Kooga try to slip a little black into the jersey as well... I guess it markets better then the old Maroon jerseys

Slim most members are pretty chuffed to hit 10000. In fact when I heard they were going for 15000 I had a little giggle to myself. Then I realised they had a least set a target no matter how improbable it might sound. I thought 10000 was impossible proves how much I know. I say good on the Reds management for getting people involved.

Went along to the game. To be expected there was a little rust but there was enough there to show that the Reds can back up last year's effort. Some random thoughts:

Will Chambers was mighty impressive for someone who hasn't played for a long time, and could very well be a 12 option going forward...runs great lines but needs to get his positioning in defence right.
Beau Robinson will end up being a very astute pickup. There is no doubt that Liam Gill is the man for the future but I would not be surprised to see Robinson get first go at openside during the regular season.
Genia looked sharp and Cooper was composed. Also kicked really well for goal.
New boy Harris' first touch of the ball was electric and i reckon he will be a very capable back up for QC (Quade Cooper), or even a 12 option.
There is really good depth at the Reds and competition for spots will be hot!

Every now and then Simmons could get a game off from starting, or maybe even sit in the stands, but you'd always want the captain to start.
I have to disagree, I think you need to ensure that young guys get to start as much as possible, it ensures that they hang around a bit longer and see they are part of the future.

Are you better off in the future with a happy Simmons or Van the man?

Van should concentrate on his specialist skill: cheerleader.

Cheers mate - was hoping to hear a first-hand report with some actual observations rather than the standard tripe in the AAP report!

I disagree Certainly Simmons will get a fair bit of game time. But he knows it's Vans last season. Ans if he's smart they will all be learning as much as they can from him this year. Longer season and if you have 3 capable guy why not rotate.

This a hard one for coaches, I reckon. You want to squeeze your best players into the starting XV wherever possible (see Horwill playing at 6 in the opening game last year so Byrnes and Van could also start).

However how often do we say that it is the quality sides who have depth in the bench. In terms of impact, I think Simmons has the ability to up the tempo as a fresh man late in the game, however Van wouldn't be able to provide the same impact. I can't recall how often Dave Giffin ever came of the bench because he wouldn't be able to have that energy. I reckon Van's in the same mould.

Unless they really separate themselves from each others in the trials, I'd imagine Horwill and Humphries will start with Simmons on the bench... particularly for that second round against NSW.

Gents, young mr simmons was fantastic at the end of the recent wobblies tour. gave the lineout another option, and generally played very well. IMHO i reckon he will be a fairly regular player, and i'm bettin he makes robbies team too.....in the group stages, to see if his tour form can be continued.

Great great tries. I'm hoping ol' Davies finds even more open space this year.

Where is Hynes? I haven't heard him mentioned in any of the pre-season discussions or matches.
