Link said before the South African tour that we had 22 confirmed signings. He just didn't put names to it. So technically we do have at least 22 signed, it's just that we only know 19 names at the moment.

No idea why we're pursuing Gasnier, we got Morgan for experience and a heap of young talent there. We should be spending that money elsewhere.

Epi, I don't see it, but agree. After what he's done this year, I back his judgement. Don't know how he fits in the backline to be honest, but let's deal with that next year.

Yeah, would he play on the wing? Fullback?

It would be lovely to have Davies and Ioane on the wings with Gasnier as the bench winger, but there are a few wingers already waiting in the wings at the Reds. Can I say wing that many times in a sentence? Maybe Gasnier needs to wait until he's earned his wings...

Don't forget it's a long season next year guys. Not like the blink and you'd miss it comp we're used to.

I'd say Link would want him to develop as a 13 like Chambers; and he could play wing too. He could be a real handful running off Cooper's passes in either position. He has a sublime offloading ability. I cannot comment on his defensive work, having not watched any NH games with him playing.
A Epi says, it's a long season next year.

I don't want to doubt Link's judgement but we now have two good outside centres, both capable of playing on the wing. I fail to see how a player never tested at this level of competition and has only been playing the game for a few years can offer experience. Money spent chasing Gasnier would be better spent paying some of the debt QLD rugby is in. All resources should be put into keeping the backline we have together. That means Cooper and Hynes currently and next year Digby. The little knowns we have this year are also going to command a higher price next time round.

No bloody Gasnier please.

Whilst I don't disagree in principal the issue raised above is irrelevant. The QRU would pay probably about $150k a year for Gas. Money well spent in gates and media profile I reckon. The ARU will pay top up regardless of where he plays. Now that money (as well as the $150k) comes from a pool of money specifically set aside for the payment of players. And that is all it can be spent on.

Any additional money Gaz gets, from QLD at least, will be from 3rd parties (businessman who is mates with Link) and he wants to pay for star players, not for QRU debt.

Having Gas just could not be a bad thing. He is an incredibly gifted and professional athlete who would offer much assistance with the development of some of our younger players.

I would say although it is un-announced that Ben Tapuai going on SA tour would mean he has also snagged a senior contract for next year.

Link really rates Gasnier. I'd trust his judgement.

He had a pretty good season in 2008/09 for a new player but was parked on the wing most of the time. In the current season he was developing well and used as 15, 13 and even 12 sometimes, but just before Xmas he went of the boil both on attack and defence.

I don't watch so much Euro rugby once the Super14 starts - just the HC and Top14 games on TV in Oz mainly and Munster and Leinster games - but Gaz doesn't seem the same player as earlier on. IIRR he was embarrassed defensively in that HC Q/Final against Toulon, but it's a small sample of current form.

But what do we know? I'm sure the ex-SF coach would know more about his rugby prowess than I would. I don't know that Gaz is Wallaby material at this stage but I'd love to see him playing in the Super15.

A good barometer of his ability is that new SF coach Cheika wants him to stay on.

I have seen Gas play 12, 13 and wing for Stade and thought he looked best at 12. He would be great back up for the current backline and like Epi said it will be a long season next year so extra depth would be good for the squad. I wouldn't mind seeing him at Ballymore.

i have no doubt that Gasnier would find some place in the backline, albeit maybe even off the bench or on the wing, he is a quality athlete and the Reds would be silly not to chase him if there is even a small chance he would want to head to the Reds.

I love Link.

Melbourne Rebels coach Rod Macqueen denies the fledgling rugby club is chasing Billy Slater, but admits they're closing in on ex-rugby league international Mark Gasnier.

Slater has been linked to the Rebels on a possible $1 million deal as his embattled NRL club Melbourne Storm face the prospect of disbanding a team built by creative accounting.

Australia and State of Origin player Slater is sure to be in demand should stars have to be shed, though Macqueen denies the Storm fullback is in the Rebels' sights.

"It's (speculation about signing Slater) definitely wide of the mark. It's definitely wrong. Especially when things are tough, we gave our assurances early on to the Storm and we still feel the same way,'' Macqueen said.

"We made a point when we came down here that we wouldn't be targeting any of the Storm players in anything we did, and nothing's changed.

"The reality is we've targeted only a certain amount of players (for the Rebels) and I would say the majority of players we've targeted we've got, and there certainly are some players we've spoken to that have wanted to remain with their current franchise.

"We've said from day one we don't want to be enticing people to this franchise with money. It's very important money isn't their motivation to come to the Rebels.''

But one player who could be a Rebels player within a fortnight is ex-St George Illawarra star Gasnier.

The 28-year-old, who quit league for French union club Stade Francais two years ago, is set for a move back to Australia in an attempt to win selection for next year's rugby World Cup.

While also on Queensland ‘s hit-list, Reds coach Ewen McKenzie admitted he'd much rather see starting Wallabies duo Quade Cooper and Peter Hynes re-sign than snare the versatile Gasnier who'd played under him at Stade.

"He's got some pretty good skills and is a good student of the game," McKenzie said.

''(But) there's no point getting stressed about it because it's all theory.

"I'm more interested in getting sorted out Cooper and Hynes. You have to look after your backyard.''

Gasnier certainly fits Macqueen's "no mercenaries'' profile - facing a hefty pay cut from his lucrative European deal if he wants to return to Australia to chase a Wallabies jersey.

"He's got a decision to make - whether to come back to Australian rugby or whether to stay - obviously he's going to get more money if he stays in France,'' Macqueen said.

"We've said that we would like if Mark came to Australia we'd certainly like him to be with the Rebels."

Definitely the smart approach, keep the players who are getting the job done and then worry about extra signings.

If hopper and c.Fainga'a can both start then there's no reason that gill can't be a starting 7 in 2011, rotate him and quirk through the season

Big call TOCC - Gilly has to prove himself with the big boys first - the question remains is he big enough - has huge heart etc etc but - Quirk different in that has size as well as the ability

awesome news re Cooper.

Scrubber, I reckon Gill will get game time next year. As many have said, its a long(er) season and Link uses his players well, something he picked up from his time in Paris. He'll rotate Gill with Schatz, I would imagine, and possibly Quirk. And I wouldn't write of Lei Tomeki just yet either. He's taken some adjusting from his time in Europe, but he's a talent and I reckon Link can get something out of him.

I wouldn't jusdge Gasnier on this year's form. Any outside back on the Stade side has looked like shit. They have been woeful.
