Was their good footy on display when they lost to Wests and Norths? It's the way the comp is set up. We all know it. There have been times when clubs with rep players returning have gone worse as a result. It's just the way things are. As for the rep players at Sunnybank Tapuai is the only one to come to the club after colts. All of the others had links to Sunnybank during their junior days, even Taps did. AWH came across from WA to have a real shot at rugby after someone with links to Sunnybank approached him. As for the cheque book there are other clubs who, as happyjack has stated, make big investments on players who have come in from outside the local system.

Cat_A I would look back through a few of the old cheque book if you get a chance.

I love the "links to sunnybank during their Junior days" sounds like ECA Senior trying to claim Quade and Pocock as Easts Juniors for playing a couple scratch games in the U16/U17 post season comps.

I dont think it fair to criticise sunny-bank as they have produced more pro players than most in recent years and the vast majority of their juniors seem to stick with the club for senior footy.

Compare them to wests who are just as strong in juniors but then lose all their players to uni.

Jets I'm not running around saying that no money or contra has ever changed hands because I don't have a clue and it's above both my pay grade (volunteer) and interest level.

My point was that although it's easy to say that players go to clubs only because of money, it's rarely (if ever) the only factor.

That's a fair point Cat. If I was going to play at a club and they offered me some money I wouldn't say to them "don't worry I was going to play for you anyway". I'd take the money and be quite happy with myself.

I was more commenting on junior coaches that they had being involved with Sunnybank and the Club supporting their school programs. As Cat pointed out relationships with clubs can make decisions easier on players.

Wow gang up on Uni & Sunnybank day .. LOL

whilst we are at it.. Lets throw GPS into the equation about buying talent.. Now i dont have this as gospel truth as I heard it from the Souths grapevine.. But the Faainga twins got offered dollars to switch to GPS & then the boys went back to Souths to see if they'd match.

If true, cant really fault Souths for saying no. They've had their own troubles lately.. But I wonder if other clubs could afford the imports if they were able to charge carparking fee like GPS have done on game day?

(I remember my own club Wests use to charge for parking, but I didnt agree with it & glad they scrapped that practice)

That's funny because I heard Souths promised them money but they never ended up paying them so they left for GPS. Gotta love the Rugger rumour mill.

Wow I had not heard that gossip ECA.

You said Communism doesnt work.. But sounds like capitalism doesn't either.

if the QRU is going to negotiate with interstate players joining the Reds... I think it would be worthwhile that they delegate a club rugby side to the player for the 3-4 games they are available each season.

Allthough I am statusquo with the current arrangement. Pick your own side. & then cheer for the underdog when they beat Goliath in the grand final.

Can you imagine the bitching and moaning on this forum if the Reds signed someone and told them where to play?

Can the QRU just hurry up and put this weeks team sheet up so we can talk about what really matters. The footy.

You're opinion must have been pretty off-par with the norm. I remember the lion's share of people telling me that Quade wouldn't amount to much.

Just goes to show that the majority aren't always right. Myself & colleagues could see something there if he got his head in the right place.

I'm pretty sure that all clubs have made some sort of payment to players at some stage.

On a side note of reds telling players where to go, they might not tell players specific clubs to go to but

I have heard numerous times that they do give them a list of 'preffered' clubs. Especially players who are Academy prospects. I was sceptical at first when I heard this but more and more people have spun this story to me.
On the real note game of the round Easts vs Wests, a win by wests could crack this competition wide open. I think the battle up front will be outstanding Easts have a young front row but some real size in the locks. Wests have a wealth of experience up front and seem to have one of the best scrums in the comp. According to the program on redsrugby Easts look to be at full strength while wests will be out key player in Kirk Hawkins & City representative Sef Fagaase. In open play this could be an issue but at set piece I feel they will have lost nothing.
Easts at full strength are a formidable outfit and will look to over power Wests with their monstrous locks Blake Enever and Michael Stolberg & their hard running no 8 Jarrod Butler.
My tip : If Wests can neutralise the Easts forward runners or at least hold them at bay they will be win the forwards battle. However the other key dual will be that of centre pairing Skelton & White vs Smith & Gillespie. If one pair can get an inch on the other it could be the difference between win or a loss.
Will go down to the wire my tip for the sake of competition suspense Wests by 2

If Easts can defend as well as they did last week during the first half they should have this one. Butler and Stollberg will be the go to men up front and I'm thinking that the firepower outwide (Mansell, Skelton, Wilder) will get them over the line. Should be a close game though, looking forward to it.

My comments about the REDS assigning preferred/designated clubs to players only refers to incoming free agents (such as interstate players looking for an opportunity)

When was the last time the Reds signed a marquee Australian player who is playing at the pinnacle of their career from another province? We have never gotten a Pocock or James O'Connor signing because well the REDS don't operate that way. Anyone coming to play Rugby in Brisbane for the REDS is either on the downside of their career (Turinuri) or is a Brumbies/Warratahs system guy who's not getting an opportunity down south (Beau Robinson)

I'm sure if someone is coming up to QLD to play for the REDS that being assigned a club wouldn't be a deal breaker in their contract negotiation.

But hey in saying that.. I'm fine with the current system that allows these fringe wallaby players who move to QLD to have an opportunity to earn a little bit of extra money by choosing the Club with the biggest chequebook.

Hey has anyone listened to the BAY FM coverage of the East Tigers games?

I'm wondering if there's like a 1,2 second delay on action??

Thinking of taking down my Ipod nano to the Kennel and switching onto the FM Frequency & listening as the game unfolds on BAY FM.
