Thanks mate - I didn't realise that you updated those things because I just went to the last page and saw the guff.

Very sensible and I should have expected it from you.

Only Rebs tourist is Phipps.

I'm going to throw one up to at least start a bit of debate about this. I'll admit I don't know alot of the team, or what many of those I do know have been up to lately, so basically I have just taken a relatively uninformed stab in the dark:

1 Weeks
2 Freier
3 Somerville
4 Byrnes
5 Campbell
6 Saffy
7 Lipman
8 Delve
9 Phipps
10 Cipriani
11 Gerard
12 Rooney
13 Mortlock
14 Betham
15 Huxley

16 Henderson
17 Robinson
18 O'Neill
19 Davidson
20 Hilgendorf
21 Mitchell
22 Kingi

I also have made no allowance for injury. What are peoples thoughts?

I gotta admit i quite like the look of the Rebels, they might not be endowed with Wallabies, but there are definetly soem talented players in that team, its just a matter of how they hold up.

The backline is what fascinates me the most, having the likes of Gerrard, Rooney, Vuna, Mortlock is pretty intimidating, they could do some damage up middle with backs like that. I would like to see what a Kingi-Cipriani halves combo could do, it could become quite a exciting little partnership over the season.

I'm going to pick as many aussies in the 1st 15 as possible mainly because it's a RWC year. So I think I can cover most of the backs but will struggle with the forwards.

15. Cipriani
14. Rooney
13.Mortlock
12. Huxley
11. Gerrard
10.Hilgendorf
9.Phibbs
8.
7.
6.
5. Byrnes
4. Campbell
3. Weekes
2. Freier
1.Henderson

Well what we need to know is how many Wallabies can they unearth?

ATM looking at the squad I can't really see anyone other Mortlock (with a lot of luck) who could really push for a Wallabies 22.

Have just found my old list by position and re-jigged it.

Melbourne Rebels 2011
by positions

1 Nic Henderson
1/2 Heath Tessman
1/3 Greg Somerville,
3 Laurie Weeks
3 Rodney Blake
2 Adam Freier,
2 Ged Robinson

4/5 Adam Byrnes,
4/5 Alister Campbell,
4/5 Kevin O'Neil
4/5 Hugh Pyle
4/5/6 Hoani Macdonald,

6/8 4/5 Luke Jones,
6 Jarrod Saffy,
7 Michael Lipman
6/7 Tom Chamberlain
8/6 Tim Davidson,
8 Gareth Delve,

9 Sam Cordingley,
9 Nick Phipps
9 Richard Kingi,
10/15 Danny Cipriani,
10/12/15 James Hilgendorf

12/13/11/14 JP Du Plessis
13 Stirling Mortlock,
13/11/14 Afusipa Taumoepeau

13/11/14 Cooper Vuna
13/11/14 Lachlan Mitchell,
11/14/15 Peter Betham,
11/14/15 Luke Rooney

15 Mark Gerrard
15 Julian Huxley

After all this time we have the 2011 squad

Some thoughts are:

• Too many folks who can play in the 2nd row and only 1 specialist 7.

• Too many players who can play wing or fullback and not enough who can play 12.

• Too many older players and not enough young ones - or, too many chiefs and not enough Indians.

My starters:
1. Somerville
2. Freier
3. Weeks
4. Byrnes
5. O'Neil
6. Davidson
7. Lipman
8. Delve (captain)

9. Phipps
10. Cipriani
11. Rooney
12. Hilgendorf
13. Mortlock
14. Vuna
15. Huxley

Notes
• If I saw 20 minutes of trials I would know more than watching this thread for a few months.

• 4/5 Two guys who can play TH lock - whacko. O'Neil before Campbell who is a powder puff and nice as pie.

• 6. McDonald if facing a good lineout. Not Saffy until I see him play rugby again.

• 7. Only one choice. Why? Chamberlain is supposed to good at poaching the ball on the ground but I haven't seen it this year.

• 9. Phipps to get a bit of youth if no other reason. I haven't seen much of Kingi, and Cordingley in rugby terms is about as old as I am in other terms. Not good.

• 12. The only one I have seen play 12 except Gerrard in the APC. Vuna wants to play there or 13 but let's have a look at him first.

• 11/14 Gerrard is too slow and should be the backup 15 where his lack of speed on defence is minimised by his experience to be in the right position. On attack his lack of speed will forgo opportunities, but he will come into his own with the boot on wet windy days at 15. A pity that the law crackdown has diminished ping-pong rugby. He would be good at that.

• 11/14 Betham is not that fast either until someone tells me some training time he has had since he left Joeys. Bruce ?? Mitchell could be a smokey - McCabe-like.

• Captain should be a forward.

• Watch this space: Luke Jones - 2011 may be a year too early but I expect big things from him a year later after he has been in the gym for 2 years and also learned a bit more about senior rugby.

Thanks for that - I hadn't seen any footage of that Oz Schools game in NZ which must have been 2006. The 2010 game in NZ was shown in Oz so there might be another clip for 2008 on U Tube somewhere.

Yea, Pete looked pretty fast in that clip and notwithstanding that he had a crook leg for most of the 2006 season. But when I saw him play against the Runners earlier this year he didn't compare well chasing after the ball with others.

I wonder if folks at Uni can compare Pete's sprint times with Mitchell, Ed Jenkins, Alfi and Jelly. You there Bruce?

A useless piece of information - Kurtley and Pete were born on the same day.

I would've thought that Gerrard would be preferred over Huxley at fullback... even if he's spent a year relaxing in the Japanese comp...

I still think 10/12 are the areas they are a bit light in.

There is also the question of fitness from injury for a couple of the squad.

In any case I am looking forward to seeing how they go.
