Wow, how many fullbacks to the Rebels want

I think he was mostly playing on the wing this year but I'm not sure, not quite a Toulon fan.
But nothing is official yet. It is just written on today's rugby newspaper

In all honesty Luke Rooney is probably the best Fullback of the lot of them on current form, could easily play wing though.
Massive kicking game.

Signing of Israel Folau looks increasingly doubtful, looking likely Rugby League will be his best bet.

Melbourne signings by position, not including Rooney. It looks likely now that LHP/hooker Tessman is going to be one of the three rookies that Oz Super teams have to have on their roster.

Players signed by position are: 24

1 Nic Henderson
1/2 Heath Tessman
1/3 Greg Somerville,
2 Adam Freier,
3 Laurie Weeks.
4/5 Adam Byrnes,
4/5 Alister Campbell,
4/5 Kevin O'Neil
4/5/6 Hoani Macdonald,
6 Jarrod Saffy,
6/8 4/5 Luke Jones,
7 Michael Lipman
8/6 Tim Davidson,
8 Gareth Delve,
9 Sam Cordingley,
9 Richard Kingi,
10/15 Danny Cipriani,
10/12/15 James Hilgendorf,
13 Lachlan Mitchell,
13 Stirling Mortlock,
11/14/15 Peter Betham,
11/14 Cooper Vuna
15 Mark Gerrard
15 Julian Huxley

Still needed in the squad:

• Props - 1 more THP - plus 2 for the academy (one experienced in senior rugby)

• Hookers - 1 more plus 1 academy (experienced);

• 2nd row - 1 academy

• 7 - 1 specialist plus 1 academy backrower

• 9 - 1 experienced academy plus a 2nd academy.

• 10 - 1 experienced academy

• 12 - 1 more, preferably a marquee player who can play more than one position plus 1 academy midfielder

• Wingers - 2 more plus 1 wing/fullback for the academy

That makes 30 in the squad and 10 professional academy players.

Note that Melbourne must pick 3 rookie players; so assuming Tessman is one, there have to be two others. Since the Brumbies and Reds have stitched up the 3 young gun 7s in the country and there are only 6 spots left, it is likely that the other two rookies will be in the backs - in the midfield and/or on the wing, perhaps one of the Eastwood 13s, Bennetts or Mitchell - and Mitchell is playing wing these days. Or maybe they have their scouts watching the St. Augustines 1st XV for midfielders.

You never know though: they could steal a march on the Tahs and give a rookie contract to U/20 LHP Salesi Manu.

It is really necessary to find a hooker coz Adam Freier is not really reliable. Maybe the guy is helpful to talk to the players but he's too often injured to be considered as a regular player.

Wouldn't a LHP be more of a need then THP considering they already have Weeks and Somerville

He got through 40 whole minutes of club rugby today without being (significantly and irreparably) injured once! :yay

That's a pity; I would have loved to have watched him play our game but it's not to be - for now.

He seems to be a shy, pleasant young man. I wish him well in whatever sport he plays in, or for whatever club.

part b, +1

part a, I would not have been happy with his recruitment, except if it was on a basic contract with no money at all from the ARU. I think he would have been average at best for at least a couple of years, maybe longer.

I respect what Vuna is doing, trying to get his name associated with RWC 2011 via the media but I can't see it happen. We are blessed with wingers that already have test experience AND up-and-coming wingers on the verge of test experience.

It just isn't realistic to expect to be blooded in union provincially and internationally in the same year. If he is the athlete people say he is at the age he is RWC 2015 is very realistic.
