I see this as a possible conflict between his management style and what our current crop of players might (sadly) require to perform at the very highest level.
He is clearly a world class mentor of young talent, but more importantly a great coach of players who do not require micro-management. He is probably shocked that he even needs to spend time coaching the basics, as it would seem obvious to him that players should own the responsibility for their skills, and should want to spend lots of time perfecting themselves in order to wear the jersey. Reading between the lines of some of his statements I think it's clear he wants players to step up without too much direction from him.
He has spent the last couple of years rotating through the playing stocks in an effort to find players who can take charge on their own. I suspect he sees this in Rocky and made him captain largely on that basis.
He was probably chosen as an antidote to Eddie's era of micro-management, which I can imagine Gits and others despised.
I really hope the Deans experiment succeeds, and I still completely support him as coach, but I think he needs J'ON to get some hard bastards into his coaching ranks, to drill the players while he focuses on the bigger picture stuff.
