Now one would wonder if O'Brien intervenes after Kaplan's blunder?

Haven't seen it yet. The popular opinion is that I'm a gay South African that doesn't know the rules.

Still, I've got 20,000 hits on YouTube :thumb

You don't sound South African!
And 20,000 hits - pftt, nothing.

Scarfy,
That video is a legend and deserved every one of the 20,000 hits. Pity some of those who took exception don't have a clue and the others looked at them through black-tinted glasses.

posting drunk ey? :)

I can imagine the degree of focus on decisions and refereeing is frustrating, its no different to the focus on England back in 2003. I'm inclined to agree with Cyclopath, we all know the ABs fall over on the wrong side to make it more difficult for oppo players to join a ruck but if they're getting away with it fair play to them. If I were a coach I would have been highlighting like mad in the lead up to games to referee.

It is a shame that so much of the focus has been on refereeing etc but then there's only so many times you can say 'fuck me the All Blacks are excellent' without a. feeling sick and b. getting bored and deciding to watch netball instead.

Thanks for the apology, MR. The video is what it is. I wanted to draw attention to a couple of things and it has been successful.

For the record, I thought the Saffer refs in the last couple of weeks were much better than the Irishmen. And as a result, the tackle contest was pretty fair.

Dear Moderators. Apologies for any offence taken from my posts.

I hope you will acknowledge that it can take time for new members to settle into the tone of a forum and this one's so civilised it took me by surprise.

How was I to know that the maker of "the YouTube clip" was such a highly respected poster, video producer, and mod on this very site? I stand by my point (with less inflammatory language) that the video shows no balance and as such should not be mistaken for actual journalism.

Gagger - don't call me a wanker - that's a breach of Rule 6. Scarfman, please tell him off.

Indeed. Actual journalism is far sloppier. Scarfy actually put some time and thought into that.

Sorry, slot of that uncalled for. Just had a gutful of the focus on refs after some cracking games in the 3n

I think you will find that most Wallaby supporters and a fair few of the knowledgable Saffas are very disappointed with how poor their teams have been. The critique of the ABs breakdown work has been a bug bear of mine for the last two years and of the Crusaders for a fair bit longer. But if you have a look through the posts here 99% of the angst is directed against the Wallabies and the coaches because of their continued poor performances.

Last night the Wallabies displayed the most commitment in a test that I have seen from them under Deans. For once that part was not lacking, and they showed the benefits of a hell of a lot of work on re-starts (with I must add some illegal blockers on the ABs chasing the kicks). Apart from that Deans continues to play clearly deficient players in the team when the ARE options. All in all I think the whilst the ABs have played as you say cracking rugby I think their opponents have been pretty poor.

I am inclined to agree. Think the discussion of the refs/Abs/the ruck has run its course. Despite the results the new emphasis on ball in hand rugby has produced some great matches, stuff us rugby fans have been waiting for for years. And in all cases the better side has won.

Bloody hell Gagger, you seem to have a hotline to the Highest Places! Or maybe London is just a hotbed of aussie rugby intelligence, unlike for example where I live, Wembury South Devon. To think I used to live in Purley......

Scarf, whatever the viewpoints re your debutant video, two things are clear: one, it was exemplary in that it used careful analysis, observable fact, and close observation to make its points. These standards of work are light years ahead of much mainstream rugby commentary in, say, planetrugby, scrum.com, RugbyHeaven, The Australian, and so forth where 'intuition' and 'my opinion' and 'someone has told me' are the intellectually lazy and typically uninformative norms. These norms deteriorate the code as they encourage unthinking prejudice and superficial conclusions. Second, yours and much of GAGR's general work is to be commended for its generally standard-setting quality and thought-leadership, whatever the debates might be over its conclusions. The fact that the GAGR team does all this unpaid and for the good of the game is doubly impressive.

Scarfman - I hadn't realised that the Vid was your work when posting my comment on another thread.
Congrats on the work. I do think however that the main point to be drawn from it is that interpretation at the breakdown is the most contentious area of the game. Sure there were instances where the ABs were "offending" and getting away with marginal play, but so were the opposition in almost every case. The difference is that Referee's interpretations this year seem to be going with the team on attack, so the split second judgement on what is a tackle and when does it turn into a ruck / maul also favours the team going forward.
