lol buddy, college football is arguably bigger than the nfl in many parts of the states .. it’s not just the students but the whole city/ state who are obsessed …
I’m well aware buddy, I’ve probably spent more time in the states than you have.

It’s bigger than the NFL in regions where the NFL doesn’t have teams or only recently started franchises. You’re being reductive if you think I mean only the current student body. Students become alumni who raise families that grow into the fandom.

Alabama has a massive amount of fans because it has 40k student body and is the only game in town in the state besides their rival school Auburn. Their alumni are everywhere in the state and the South to the point that “The Machine” which was a political organization originally meant for rigging Greek Life elections became a factor in actual elections.

All the non-alumni t shirt fans become Alabama fans largely because they don’t have a pro team to support in the area and the universities employ a massive amount of locals. So it’s likely you either know an alumnus, a student, an employee, or have some kind of business relationship with the university.

There’s also the factor of the big schools consistently having winning records. People love a winner and there’s no parity inducing mechanism in cfb like there is in the NFL with the draft or salary cap.

Looks like our betrayal by our SANZAAR partners which was flagged earlier in the year is set to happen
Traditional All Blacks tour of South Africa greenlit: report

Rugby Championship impact

Naturally a tour of this nature will have an impact on the 2026 Rugby Championship, and also the 2030 edition of the tournament.

Rugby Australia and the Argentina Rugby Union are unlikely to be happy about this development, something Saru and NZR expect.

Regardless, South Africa and New Zealand have decided to put their own interests first in a difficult commercial climate. A tour of this nature will earn both unions hundreds of millions of rand, but will also create massive interest in the game again.

Still a lot of hurdles to cross:

a) Only being reported in SA based on comments made by SARU CEO
b) All stems from that great source "The Daily Maverick" a South African News Paper, I think electronic only.
c) There is only a memorandum of understanding.
d) Details agreed in principle not yet signed off
e) Still to go to sponsors and broadcasters.
f) If to be held in 2026 very short time frame to sort out above.

I thought you guys hated playing the All Blacks almost as much as you hate Super Rugby? Now you don't have to play the dickheads a couple of times! Win Win!

The current SANZAAR agreement is only locked-in to 2025, so same story there for whatever 2026 TRC looks like. Not much time to sort it out
In 2020 the four nations commited to The Rugby Championship until 2030. Not sure whether that has changed since then, I think it may be the television broadcast deals that run to 2025.

Yeah I fully endorse deleting all of the RC and Super Rugby.

Yep bang on Tazz, it's tv deal that runs out 2025. The deal to run RC until 2030 would still stand, I sure like the super deal only an agreement to take part, as seen in Super with Rebels going everyting probably doesn't have to same exactly the same.

New agreement was reached in 2022, through to 2025 after SA left Super Rugby in 2021. This does align with the current TV deal

Separately Super Rugby Pacific was locked in to 2030, but RA and NZRU only

Why's it a betrayal,
Mainly because it makes for dramatic posting!

It does seem like SARU and NZRU will be removing games and cash from the SANZAAR agreement and replacing it with their own ecosystem. Which is probably fair enough if you can get away with it, but is going to feel like pretty poor form for the others in the partnership.

If NZ and RSA want to cos up and form this tour allegience.

What are our options? We should just enter into the pacific nations cup and we can finally compete for a trophy for once…

speaking of the pacific nations cup. Australia (& Nz for that matter) should really be entering an Aus A and Nz Māori team into it to continue to develop test rugby prospects

I’m sure the wallabies and kiwis can find a date for the 3rd Bledisloe match as well

3 matches does help our chances getting the cup back in the years where Australia host 2 matches or even the token neutral location

Plus this way NZ can experience the pain of continually losing a cup every year (or however often its on).

During these tour years, with 4 SA tests, it's hard to see there being more than one Bled as part of TRC. Maybe that's our chance. Smash and grab at home

there’s been an idea floated previously about a Anzac Day Bledisloe.

I really like the idea but understand the logistical nightmare of halting super rugby to play a game of footy on April 25.

but considering we don’t know what Super Rugby landscape looks 2026 beyond. Maybe it’s achievable
