2024 Super Rugby Under 16 and 19 series (29th Sept - 3rd Nov)

Wilson

Phil Kearns (64)
Dominant wins to the Reds over the Rebels in the under 16s (46-11) and under 19s (67-0) sees both sides into next weekends finals at Ballymore. Results in the Force v tahs games will have no effect on who makes the finals.

Under 16s final: tahs v Reds
Under 19s final: Reds v Brumbies

Seven NSW players in the ACT Run-On - good to see player movement is alive and well, even at this young age group.

Biggest challenge NSW has had in the 16s in years.

NSW needs to be split still IMO. And add a Presidents/RA side of the next lot of QLD kids then 3rd lot of NSW and rest of the country. Give them another couple games and more competitive games.

Congrats NSW and great fight QLD. Nobody’s rattled their cage like that.

I think part of the problem is that whatever happens in the 16s right now needs to match the 19s from a logistical stand point and the 19s are always going to drive the decisions there. I'm not sure the money exists to be running extra teams and rounds for the 16s that diverge from that 19s program.

Might all be in a bit of a holding pattern at the moment anyway, there's going to need to be a lot more consideration of how the rebels are run long term, particularly if they want to align this with the proposed super Au comp.

Get all of it and it makes sense. I just think when you look at the final table and the +\- it really isn’t providing competitive games.

Hasn’t been a one off this season either.

Oh and fully agree and think in an ideal world we'd cast a wider net younger and narrow as we get older (to account for development differences, attrition to other sports, vagaries of talent id, etc.), I just can't see them getting there right now. There is also a consideration that the pathways they've been building are very tightly coupled with the super sides and pro setups which is something they'll want to maintain - so more room for 2 sides out of NSW and QLD then any sort of combined/barbarians side.

From the 19s perspective I'd prefer they went full home and away before adding teams, and rely on the professional game to spread talent alongside improving development to lift the Force as it has the Brumbies. Whether that opens up some room to do more with the 16s I'm not sure, but there're are probably some constraints on the length of the program that don't exist for the 19s.

Brilliant kick off work from the Reds here, make an absolute mess of the Brumbies attempts to receive and then leaning on the strength of there set piece. Brumbies attack very incisive when they get the ball and is keeping them very much in this game despite QLD looking dominant and having the lions share of territory and possession.

And the Brumbies do exactly what I was talking about and strike quickly from play starting deep in their half to take the lead. Real clash of styles in this game making it very interesting.

Dillon def pulling the strings - Wilcox also good but a little greedy not making simple passes to support runners, and the odd poor kick - nothing that can't be fixed with coaching.

Reds #6 (now playing #8) very good.

Cracking advert for fluid rugby - and a well deserved win for ACT.
