2024 Super Rugby Under 16 and 19 series (29th Sept - 3rd Nov)

Reds scoring some worldies in the first half of the u19s both before and after the heavens opened. Have had the ball on a string at times. Doing everything they need to keep their future in their hands next week. Leading 33-5 at half time (5 tries to 1).

2 tries a piece for a much more even 2nd half, but the Reds get the bonus point win they needed with a 45 - 17 win. Lineout looks to be their Achilles heel right now, particularly combined with some lees than perfect discipline.

A bonus point win next week will see them finish on top of the table and guarantee them a final vs the Brumbies. Anything less and they'll have a nervous wait to see how the Force v tahs game finishes.

Why should we be surprised a Brumbies team could put together a clinical performance like that vs the Tahs in the 19s? Their heavy loss vs the Reds was a major aberration and there is a good team there which was on full display today.

Brumbies front row were dominant in all facets. Apa showed he is the best No. 2 around. If Baxter continues to develop and put on some bulk he could be anything. Ryan at No. 7 arguably the best forward on the field with so many involvements. Smith and Dillon at 9-10 easily outpointed their opposites and bossed the game. Wilcox probably only shaded by Dillon as the best back on the park.

Waratahs front 5 and 9-10-12 combo unfortunately all way off in their combinations today. Grover certainly came out with some credit out of the backline. Waratahs rely way too much on the 8 and 15 to make things happen when things aren't working. Although both did some things today that show they can be a class above everyone else, they also both made some uncharacteristic errors and the Waratahs didn't really have anyone else who stepped up to make things happen.

It's a cruel fate for the Waratahs after one poor showing, but it's now almost certainly to be a Brumbies vs Reds final.
He's a very good player.

Looks like a guy the 7s program should go after right now as well. It's the guys in the middle we lack in 7s and we tend to shove slow/old backs in there.

The 9 position is an interesting one here. Smith was better than Sharples on the weekend who played IMO like a dummy half with a kicking game instead of an attacking threat. It let guys like Ryan get up to Fowler and stunt any play. We do have to find a couple for the 20s and Grover the 9 for the 18s is only in year 11 and I can't imagine them taking a kid still in school.

No reason why the 20s next year won't be able to put out a decent sized pack. Second Row is massive but could shift some people like Doyle in there I think but plenty of Front Row talent and size.

Good to see the pressure and results in the 19s though. Would be a waste of time if it was just a flow on of 16s, 18s, results.

How much of a change is there in each of the teams between 18s and 19s?
Potentially huge - as you get the boys playing against each other in Colts which is U20s, and some rise to the top, while others fade away due to U18s size, and new faces appear that are later developers.

I would have guessed it's more a contracting thing?

But rather than potential, what are the actual differences between this years U19 and last year u18s generally. Is there a lot of movement between the teams?

Heaps in terms of personnel.

The 16s and 18s is basically the School/Club systems v each other then the 19s becomes the Super franchises. It's why the Brums go from an 80 point loss in 16s to a convincing win in the 19s. It's not ACT Club footy doing that it's good recruitment and game planning. Youd find 75% or more of the Brums 19s are from NSW or QLD 18s.

And likely between 18s and 19s, quite a few are lost to NRL etc too, which also evens the playing field?

Ghost, Rudderless showed the players' clubs at post #186 above. Just on that data, 61% of this years' U19s are playing in Canberra. I don't know how many, if any, are players who relocated from NSW or Qld.

Enasio, Smith, Morrison, Ryan, John who are originally NSW who are now part of ACT. As I said it's good recruitment by the Brumbies.

There's been players in previous years list a Canberra Club before playing a game for that Club but picked for the Brums 19s.

In the starting side is it Wilcox and Pilot as the only fully home grown players? Watching the 16s it makes sense that this is the Brumbies path to success and building good teams which they have always been able to do.

I’m not saying you are right or wrong BR but to me it’s not a big issue either way. At u19 level the most important thing is the best kids are in the system somewhere. As a Reds fan I’d love to us to always get it right and secure the very best of the emerging Qld talent but it just doesn’t happen and if the Brumbies, Force and Rebels are topping up their talent with the best Queenslanders and it is keeping more of those kids in the game so be it.

Of course I want quality recruits coming out of the ACT catchment too and no doubt there are but it’s pretty understandable that the bulk of talent is being produced in our two biggest catchments.

You'd think pathways alignment between ACT and Vic Rugby/Melb Rebels moving forward might make some sense ...

So a tahs v Reds final in the under 16s is all but guaranteed.

In the 19s a bonus point win over the Rebels will see the Reds jump to the top of the table for a final against the Brumbies. Less than that will leave the door open for the tahs to sneak in. Brumbies have locked up their place in the final.

Joe Dillon is the most talented and promising 10 in this country.

Genuinely a triple threat, a rare hybrid that a lot of these 10s coming through do not possess. I'll tell you what as well, that Tahs 10 in the 16s is a highlight reel as well.
Just watched his highlights, his a nugget fella, but yeah seems to kick, pass and run well.

Agree with all of this TSR.
