Lance is a very good player and I was surprised he didn't get a 20's call up.

Cooper was actually at 15 for Souths I think with Fainga'a playing 10.

yeah i knew they werent both 5/8, but you would think that a Wallaby player would be more likely to receive MOM then a Reds academy player.

Watched Q Cooper play club footy for the first time on the weekend and he was the difference between Souths and Easts, as a test player should be. Threw two superb passes and kicked cleverly for the last three Souths tries. His game looks to have changed a little. Less of the exaggerated step and not trying to do much.

Souths look like real contenders. Good honest forward play and a quick backline. They defended very well when Cooper was in the bin for a late hit on Andrew Walker. Easts were brave in defeat given how many top line players they have injured.

Both teams still behind Brothers though, who racked up 50+ against Wests.

This weekend sees Q. Cooper named at 15 for Souths, and McLinden at 10 for Sunnybank. Dayna Edwards is listed at 1 for Sunnybank - I dont know if thats correct.

There are a lot of top names missing - Greg Holmes (who I can only assume is injured again), Sean Hardman, Adam Byrnes, Peter Hynes and Jack Kennedy. Some or all may be on the bench or not named, but play anyway.

No sign of Caleb Brown anywhere: I heard his Force deal fell through due to hammy issues, and hoped he was still in Qld getting better.

Houston is named on the bench for Norths. Its the 16 jersey, but I doubt he's been converted to the front row as I have long called for.

EDIT: no sign for Ezra Taylor this club season, so far as I can tell.

The Danya at 1 is interesting. He's played there most the season. Oddly, I'd like to see Holmes have a good crack at THP, as I reckon he could become our next Wallaby 3.

James Hanson seems to be playing damn well. I hope he packs on the pounds for next year. Hardman and he would be a good combo.

Hanson up against Hardman this Saturday at Crosby Park in what looks to me to be the match of the round. Uni are out of the finals race but with their Reds back have found some good form lately. It will be interesting to see whether young Lance at 10. can keep his good form. Should be a good battle in the forwards but the Brothers backs may have the edge.

Caleb Brown I hear has, due to continuing injuries given rugby away.
he is a very bright lad and has a future in any profession he so chooses.
On a sadder note and he also is very, very ill - not a well boy at all.

Didn't see the game RF but have heard Ben Tapuai impressed at 10. Think he is a great player just wonder about his pace. Wonder what brought his brother back from OS. Breakers are looking like the smokey in this comp. Very capable forward pack with a solid front row, the usual 10 Golling is all class, and with the Tapuai brothers and a few others in the backs like Ngawini and Albert, they just might give the comp a shake.

Easts have an injury list a mile long and will struggle in this comp if they don't get some cattle back soon.

Watched Brothers win by a point against Uni in a thriller. The finals will be interesting.

Easts v Bros for mine. 1 v 4 and both last years finalists. Brothers will start as favourites given Easts injuries but Easts are a pretty stout bunch. Brothers won Round 1 48-0 or something but if Easts have a few back and Walker is firing then anything is possible.

Having said that Souths vs the Bank with all the Reds back will be a beauty as well.

Went out to Shaw Park and left before the end but Norths were getting pumped by the Sun Coast 32-15. Didn't recognise anyone in the Suncoast team but their scrummy, and 7 were decent. Also had a young fullback with a bit of toe.

Three Reds on the Norths side didn't help. Will Genia was sharp and a cut above. He really does have a great pass. Houston was busier than I usually see in club stuff and had a couple of bullocking runs. Blair Connor doesn't make the best use of his pace and quick feet at club level and gets too involved in the close stuff IMO. Can tackle though and smashed his opposite number in one instance. Not too much to play for except pride in this one and looked like the boys from the North Coast wanted it more. Norths were very undisciplined.

I hear that Brothers got up at Bottomley. Any reports Rugbyfreak?

Great game at Broadbeach Friday night - Wests had the Breakers rattled. Was very intense with some great tight play.
Ben Tapuai came on for Buatava at 10 in the 2nd haf and things turned around wth Breakers winning comfortable - can't remember the score as we leaft before the final whistle.

Unfortunately, Mrs Freak and the Freakettes have conspired against Mr Freak and no leave pass was issued today! (Yes, I know - Whipped!!!!!) All I know is that Easts lost and in danger of slipping out of contention. Injuries have taken a heavy toll on the regular A graders and even some of the Prem Colts that have been asked to fill in at times this year. Still can't believe that Ed Quirk is still only 17! Andrew Scotney leaving for Italy is not going to help with their chances either. Still Easts have a, seemingly easy run home. You would have to say that Brothers and Souths are standouts for the GF, and Brothers to gain revenge for last years defeat. Maybe next time........

Time for some positive Qld rugby talk!

Should be a cracker of a game down at Chipsy Wood oval today with Brothers visiting Souths. 1 v 2 and the Caxton Cup on the line. Both backlines have a ton of pace and Brothers are going to have to keep a close eye on Cooper at 15.

Some mongrel in both packs as well, so I won't be surprised if there are fireworks.

Might be worth a trip over the bridge.

On the school front, State High v Nudgee should also be good viewing.

Queensland Premier Rugby fulltime:

Norths 43 bt Wests 26
Souths 34 bt Brothers 5 (Caxton Cup)
GPS 26 bt Sunshine Coast 10
Gold Coast 25 bt Uni 24

woohoo, souths racked up a very nice score against Brothers, Souths are looking like the real deal this year, solid strong mobie forward pack with a big, fast and strong backline, injuries are the only thing which will stop them from becoming premiers in 2010.

Im not in Brisbane so i didnt get to watch this game, but a match report would be appreciated please.

Well, if that game was anything to go by then Souths will be warm favourites for the flag this year. Watched them tough it out against Easts a few weeks back and today they totally dominated.

It was a good forward battle but Souths were definitely the tighter and more agressive unit and gave their backs a great platform. Impressive loosies but I don't know their names. Cooper played at 12 and controlled things well. He really does have the best pass in Australian rugby. He was well supported by the fullback Tabrett, who I've seen a few times now and is a big unit who showed some individual brilliance with a chip and chase to set up the try of the match. Ant Faingga was excellent at 13 and put in a superb defensive effort. The boy can really hit hard. They have good speed on the wings and 2007 OZ schools halfback is back from the ACT and playing at scrummie.

These guys will be hard to toss.

Lee, in another post you asked which schoolboys from last year are in Premier grade. I think I recognised David Feao (BSHS) at 1.

Sounds like Souths are doing the business.

I don't remember a lot about David Feao from the Schools tournament last year and the only note I have in my programme said: "Yellow Card". Is he a regular starter? If so he must be doing well.

My eye wandered over to the other side of the 2008 programme page to the Qld II team and I noticed that 2009 Qld I star, 3 Paul Alo-Emile, had played for Qld II in 2008, which I had forgotten. My notes say that in the Qld I v Qld II game both 3s - PAE and Daley - had top games. I also had WTK written against the name of Paul.

I sometimes use such short-hand notes but more often than not forget what they mean. I have just had a long think and then the lightbulb came over my head: it meant "Watch This Kid". Talk is cheap but I'm giving myself a pat on the back, given how well Paul played in the Oz Schools tournament in 2009.

Salesi Manu from NSW I was preferred in the 1st XV for Oz Schools last year, at least for the first game, and he is playing in 2nd Grade for Sydney front runners, Manly, and also was in the amateur NSW Academy this year. And if Faeo is starting regularly in 1st Grade up there we will have some good LHPs down the track. Even if they don't make it themselves, the guys who overtake them for pro rugby spots are going to have a bit of quality.

In 2005 we had the year of the Schoolboy flyhalves; in 2006 and 2007 we had the years of the centres; in 2008 we had the year of the wingers - though the best one went to the AFL and 2009 was the year of the THP. Maybe 2008 was the year of the LHP too.

Talk is cheap - but it all looks good.
