Funny old game rugby... the most impressive result of the weekend was probably Easts 28-5 win over the Reds filled Sunnybank.

Brothers got the lollies against the Gold Coast 39-27 however did it against 14 men when the Breakers prop got red carded in the first half. A fully stocked Gold Coast just might be the team to beat as they were impressive with a man down. Gillespie for Brothers should get some consideration from the Reds next season..quite a powerful 12. If winger Donnelly were bigger so would he, he shows a ton of heart.

My first time to see Rex Tapuai. He was good and has more pace than younger brother Ben, which he shwed when he ran down the fleet footed Donelly.

So Rex went well? Interestingly Gillespie has been part of the Reds structure in the past and I don't really know what happened to him. I also thought Sunnybank had a lot of their Reds out: Holmes, McLinden, Fetoai, Ioane and the number 8 (Can't remember his name). When they played us they did. They lacked outside backs firepower

Have to watch Rex T a couple more times to form a valid opinion but he looked sharp enough and seems to have the skills. He played opposite Gillespie on Saturday and he looks handy as well.

Who is the Gold Coast No. 8 ? Thought he was very good.

How is their front row going, it looks to have two future test props there

They seem to going well - apparently both the "modern" day type prop - about 115 kg with heaps of mobility and skill as opposed to the old 3 ton boof with 8inches of forehead bone who just competed in the set piece- understand Daley is completing a Law degree and Slipper completing an Architect degree. WHAT is the world coming to !!!!! Always thought the smart ones came from the backs ??????

Backs must be smarter by the very fact they have made a conscious decision not to stick their heads up other blokes bums.
Seems quite a sensible move to me.

Hey Whispers, - You must have been a back - Poor buggers - most of the backs need to be wearing sunscreen and big straw hats - should only be "paid" on involvements

The Gold Coast can confirm the final four spots if they account for GPS at the Coast this weekend. GPS are an outside chance for the four but have the Coast then Brothers, and then have to rely on Norths knocking over Easts in the final week. Should be a good game at Albert Park. Definitely the game of the round.

Only other game featuring a finals side is Brothers v Norths at Shaw Park. Brothers should romp home.

Boilover at Shaw Road with Norths getting up over Brothers 31 - 24. Norths were very enthusiastic and got out to a good lead then defended like hell for the last 15-20 minutes. Houston played but didn't last the whole game but the other forwards really put in. Guy by the name of Bond looked to be the chief playmaker for Norths. An ex-Leaguie apparently, in his first season of rugby. Looks good, very strong. Halfback was good too, a polynesian guy.

For Brothers, James Harvey and Damon Murphy looked dangerous with ball in hand, and their forwards looked dangerous for long periods of time without getting any reward. Connor .

The Norths win was all the more meritorious as it was done without Red, Connor and Wallaby, Genia.

GPS V Gold Coast 22/8/9

My attempt at a small match report I hope I was not too biased

GPS V Gold Coast 22/8/9

GPS 31 Breakers 20
GPS totally dominated at the Ruck and Maul to take the win at Albert Park. The breakers Forwards did not work as a pack and when combined with their poor body height and one out, unsupported, running allowed the GPS defence to turn the ball over a least a dozen times. The Breakers scored first and were well in it for the first quarter but after that they fell away and fell into a pattern of individual play and not team work. When the backs had their chance they looked dangerous and it was only GPS’s fantastic cover defensive effort that stopped them scoring a heap of points. GPS controlled the game for all of the second half and were more than a match for the Gold Coast boys with only a Try from a charge down bringing them anywhere near the GPS team.

For the Breakers to figure in the finals they will need to lift their work around the park and at the ruck . They didn’t protect their ball, didn’t use their backs enough and didn’t put enough pressure on GPS in attack or defence.

GPS seem to build their game around a strong forward base in the loose, and while I believe The Gold Coast had better individuals, GPS worked much better as a pack. Their backs seemed a little too happy to kick for field position and not run so much, but hey it worked for them so it couldn’t have been too bad.

That is massive! Was there many at the game? Was it a full Brothers side? So what do you think the make up of the semi-finals will look like?

Wow. The Norths result is amazing!

Sully, how was the scrum battle? Gold coast obviously have a good front row but I rate the GPS one too, particularly Gaven Warren.

It was pretty even but all in all I would give it to GPS. They won a feed for through the 90 and generally disrupted GC ball I would give the lineout as even.

I didn't notice Andrew Shaw or Dom Shipperley on the field and Donelly was running water after being belted by the Coast boys last week. Other than that it was a fully loaded Brothers team with the likes of Croft and McKibben playing. Hardman played off the bench which was a bit of a surprise.

Next week shapes up as very interesting with Easts needing to beat Norths to guarantee 4th spot. First three spots are in the bag for Brothers, Coast and Souths, though with Brothers and Coast both losing, the minor premiership is still up for grabs I think.

From the QRU web site

A more cohesive forward pack and an enterprising running game kept GPS' slim finals hopes alive in a 31-20 bonus point victory over semi-final certainties Gold Coast in Round 21 of Queensland Premier Rugby.

With GPS captain Steve Miller leading the way, the Gallopers' backrow took the honours over their highly rated opposition trio while the Breakers' expected scrum dominance failed to eventuate, with GPS tighthead prop Gavin Warren gaining a points decision over QR Reds loosehead Ben Daley in the scrum and in the loose.

The Gallopers' jack in the box scrumhalf Tom Sully was even more elusive than usual with his up tempo game posing problems for the Breakers around the rucks, while back Sam Satui also played strongly.

The GPS forward pack showed better combination, commitment and teamwork at the breakdown than the Breakers' eight, who let themselves down too often with poor handling and one-off runs.

Gold Coast centre Rex Tapuai proved a handful for the GPS mid-field defence but with GPS on the front foot for most of the second half he had too few opportunities to attack.

GPS scored five tries to three and could have made it six had not Peter Stevenson not lost the ball over the line in the first five minutes. He made up for the lapse by scoring the visitors' first try at the 18 minute mark when the Gold Coast had taken first blood.

The win keeps GPS in the semi final hunt but they must beat competition leaders Brothers next week and hope that Easts stumbles against Norths if they're to leapfrog the Tigers into fourth spot.

GPS 31 (G Ingram, S Miller, B Roberts, S Satui, P Stevenson tries, D Slade 3 cons) bt Rugby Gold Coast 20 (M Francis, J Sykes, M MacDonald tries, V Tomu-Buataua 1 pen 1 con)

Ok, two points:

1) Another good report about Gavin Warren. I would love to see this guy get a go at a higher level. Perhaps the 5th team will pick him up.
2) Steve Philpotts is the GPS forwards coach I believe. He must be doing some job. I've seen them play a few times now and have been mightily impressed. Their pack is full of no-names (from the weekend it was: 1. Luke Bolster, 2. Joshua Pszczonka, 3. Gavin Warren, 4. Dougal Blennerhassett, 5. Geoff Ingram, 6. Jono Ellis, 7. Liam Ferguson, 8. Steve Miller) and they've outplayed some pretty damn well credentialed packs, including Souths and Gold Coast. I reckon a lot of it must come down to their coaching. Perhaps Philpots (who I think is also the QLD Schoolboys coach????) should be considered for a role with the Reds?

Yeh That's what I meant to say. Just in my own semi illiterate way. I didn't realise it was Ben Daley. Mrs Sully says he has built up his Legs too much and doesn't have the flexibility to get low enough. His legs did seem very big. I thought he packed with his knees too high. He has a very straight back like Al Baxter and because his knees and hips are high his back is parallel to the ground and he collapse very easily on the hit. A inch lower at the knees with the same height at the head would make all the difference in my humble opinion.

Steve Philpotts has built a good pack who work with and off each other it was good to see even if it was the wrong team on the day.

This was our first outing to a club game for a couple of years. It was free entry and cost me less than $10 for some softies and chips for "The Cork"(my Daughter can't sink). It is a little embarrassing to admit we haven't been for so long. But I am determined to make our visits to Albert Park more regular.

I was expecting to pays some dollars at the gate is this normal for the Brisbane Comp?
