Recruit is 'Ray of hope for Coast rugby team

12:00a.m. 22nd April 2009

| By Jon Tuxworth

In a happy coincidence, new boom Sunshine Coast Stingrays recruit Roy Kinikinilau was born on Valentine?s Day.

Appropriate even, because the Stingrays are in need of a little love on the player front given their current injury crisis.

The Premier Rugby club is hopeful Kinikinilau?s application will be cleared in time for its crucial home clash with University at Stockland Park on Friday night.

The imposing 107kg, 190cm utility played Japanese rugby for IBM last year, following a two-year stint in Super 14 rugby for the Waikato Chiefs.

A try scoring machine with blinding speed, the 29-year-old also previously played for the Otago Highlanders and Wellington Hurricanes.

Stingrays coach Glenn Panoho has his fingers crossed Kinikinilau will run out for the Stingrays in two days time as they search for their first Premier Rugby win of the season.

?We hope to get him cleared to play by Thursday and get him on the field ASAP,? Panoho said yesterday.

?When you get a player of his class, you want to play him as quickly as possible.

?When I was told he was available, I couldn?t believe it.

?I think I may have played against him when I was going around. I was definitely aware of what he could offer us as a player.?

While Kinikinilau has forged a well-earned reputation for sniffing out a try, Panoho is unsure which number will be on the back of his new recruit?s jersey.

?I honestly don?t know. We?ll play him where he?s needed most,? Panoho said.

?That may be at six or eight, or even 13 or 14.?

The coup continues the Stingrays? love affair with Japan, after they also signed US World Cup flyhalf Mike Hercus from the Land of the Rising Sun.

Hercus played alongside Kinikinilau at IBM Big Blue.

Panoho coached Japanese team Ricoh from 2004-07 and has maintained some handy contacts since those days.

His connections also helped former Stingrays skipper Charles Wyllie sign with Tokyo Gas, which he will begin later this month.

?It?s about basically keeping in touch with those contacts and never severing ties,? he said. ?I think had we had Charlie on the field last week (against Gold Coast) it would have gotten us over the line.

?You just have to look at what David Croft is doing for Brothers at the moment.

?It?s a flow on effect to the players around him because they want to try and lift to his level.?

Coast may well end up having a backline with Hercus at 10, Turinui at 13 and Kinikinilau on the wing, or you could move Turinui to 12 and Kinikinilau to 13. That's pretty decent.

was reading a article on pokies clubs in brisbane this morning, apparently Sunnybank rugby club is quickly on the rise and has one of the biggest turnovers in QLD at $14million. It has been evident in the last 12months as well, Sunnybank Community Club(Sunnybank Rugby Union) has been handing out grants to Sunnybank and QRU quite happily.

SBRU received a grant to set up a juniors club in Browns Plains, and the QRU received a grant for a new development officer or something

Went down to Crosby Park on the weekend to have a look at Brothers and they dealt out a 40 odd to 5 thrashing to NORTHS. Look like a disciplined and well drilled side. Helps to have Croft on the side of the scrum and Hardeman on the bench but they have some good players. Young Harvey was at fullback rather than 13 but he looks like a player who could develop. And you would have to say that if Blair Connor is enough for S14 then the Brothers light weight winger Donelly should get consideration. Big motor, lots of pace. Given that the likes of McKibben and Shaw were not playing they will be hard to beat for the flag this year.

Couple of Reds turned out for Norths. Houston was pretty disappointing on the losing side. He should carve up at this level but his workrate was very low. Blair Connor tried hard but overplayed his hand and could have used his teammates more effectively.

Peter Hynes is back for GPS this weekend.

Mark McLinden makes his club debut for Sunnybank v Uni. Dayna Edwards is on the bench for the Bank, I assume returning from injury.

For Uni, Mitchell Chapman is listed at 8, but they are missing Weeks, Hanson and Byrnes up front.

Gees if I was GPS I'd be playing Hynes at 15 or 13. It is a good backline for them though. Quite dangerous. It needs to be though, cause Brothers are bloody good. No Crofty though?

Gees, look at that Souths backline. Looks like a really bad Scrabble hand.

Wallaby and QR Reds wing Peter Hynes scored a sensational try as GPS overcame Brothers 21-17 in a down-to-the-wire thriller at Yoku Road, in Round 11 of Queensland Premier Rugby.

With pride on the line after suffering a humiliating 33-0 loss against the Gold Coast Breakers last round, the Gallopers came out with clear determination against the heavily favoured competition front runners Brothers.

In a thrilling display of attacking rugby, GPS had the Brethren on the ropes at the break with an unexpected 21-0 lead, thanks to two tries to prop Gaven Warren and Hynes' effort to power over for their third.

It was Hynes' first match for his new club after being given a break from Wallaby camp to gain match practice following his recovery from knee soreness.

Playing at fullback, Hynes gave his knee a thoroiugh workout, proving a handful both in attack and in defence, shutting down a number of promising attacks from the Brethren.

However the Gallopers almost let Brothers off the hook in the second half due to poor ball security and careless infringements.

“From our lead at half time we should have come out and put a couple more points on,” Hynes said.

“It was tough match, but we made it hard for ourselves by letting Brothers back into the game.

“At times we were really good at the breakdown, but we got to the point where we were pushing it a bit too far and were getting penalised.”

Hynes gave his knee the all clear after the match and said he enjoyed getting back to competitive rugby.

“It was good to have a run today, and it (the match) went right down to the wire which was good.”

GPS scrum half Tom Sully was another to shine for the Gallopers after missing last week's match through injury, the nimble number 9 executing precision clearances as he orchestrated a Jeeps attack that saw prop Gaven Warren smash through Brothers’ defences twice in the first half.

Reds and Brothers hooker Sean Hardman said the Jeeps forwards came out hard from the kickoff.

“The Jeeps pack really came at us with a lot of enthusiasm, which was pretty impressive,” he said.

“We were slow out of the blocks.

“Unfortunately we waited until the second half to gear up, we were a lot more composed, but by then the damage was done, we weren’t getting enough phase ball to be a genuine threat,” he said.

Brothers’ slow burn comeback began when centre Dallan Murphy cannily exploited an openside weakness that resulted in outside centre Brett Gillespie scoring the Brethren’s first try.

Brothers continued their late assault with gusto, with tries to Paul Doneley and one to interchange Alistair McLean, scoring courtesy of another break by Murphy.

However GPS managed to hold firm until the final whistle, albeit conceding Brothers a bonus point for finishing within seven points.

Hardman downplayed the impact of having several Brothers players involved in the midweek Reds versus Japan match on Wednesday night, and tipped the Brethren to bounce back from the disappointment.

“Playing three games in the space of a week is not easy," Hardman said.

“But the boys are pretty fit and I think that we will take on take on the Sunshine Coast next round with renewed vigour,” he said.

GPS face Sunnybank next round.

GPS 21 (G Warren 2, P Hynes tries, B Tuqiri 3 cons) bt Brothers 17 (B Gillespie, P Doneley, A McLean tries, D Murphy con)

I went out to this match, actually went out for a lunch honouring GPS legend David Clarke before hand. I could only stay for the first half, but it was a bloody impressive performance by GPS. They were smacked last week by Easts, so it was an excellent showing by the Gallopers. The interesting thing is that they dominated in the forwards, which are basically a bunch of no names. And it is their backline that is the strength with some real attacking class there.

Hynes played fullback and his try was strong, but it was the forwards that provided the territory and possession. The interesting dual try scorer is Gaven Warren. No Warren was in the Oz Schoolboys team in 2005 (with Beale, Pocock, Daley) and was plucked by Eddie Jones from the academy to sit on the bench v the Lions when the start of our prop depth was tested. Now the word is that Warren was told to come on and take a dive in the first scrum to enable uncontested scrums. He looked relatively scrawny and out of his depth then. Well he looked completely different on the weekend. I don't have stats but he looks a bloody big boy and mobile enough. His two tries were proper prop tries too, pick and drives from a dominant few mauls/rucks. Scrums were strong too.

I wonder if he will get back into rep consideration? Schoolboys in 2005, making him what, about 21 or so?

University kept their finals hopes alive with a bonus point win 48-22 win over Sunnybank at St Lucia in Round 11 of Queensland Premier Rugby.

Thanks to the brilliance of fly half Jono Lance, the Red Heavies ran away with the match at the end - the final scoreline not showing the closeness of the teams for the majority of the match.

Both sides traded tries throughout the first and second halves, with the scores locked at 22-all until a break from Lance set up a try for David Burns in the corner.

It started an avalanche of points for the home side, who had trailed 13-5 in the first half.

While Lance proved trouble for the Dragons through the middle of the field, winger David Burns showed his expertise in adding the finishing touches, grabbing himself a hat trick of tries.

QR Reds fullback Mark McLinden was dangerous in his first outing for the Dragons, as was fly half Teti Tela, who had a hand in all three of Sunnybank's tries.

University 48 (D Burns 3, J Lance 2, S Kelly, W Brown tries, J Lance 5 cons 1 pen) bt Sunnybank 22 (T Tela 2, M McLinden tries, V Eriksen 2 cons, pen)

Noddy – Did you go over to the tents on the other side of the field to watch the Premier game? I was at the game – my business partner and I had organised one of their ‘corporate’ tents for the day, and took a few clients along. It was an entertaining game, and GPS completely dominated Brothers around the rucks in the first half. Impressive performance. One thing though – Hynes had 15 on his back, but to my eye was playing wing for most of the game.

Wandered down to Shaw Park to see Norths take on Easts which ended up 30 something to 5. Easts were quite clinical and played some attractive footy with good width. Norths weren't as bad as the score indicates but look a couple of class players short of being competitive at the business end. Walker showed class at 15.

Interesting that Uni beat Sunnybank.

I saw a bit of Uni v the Bank - from about the 30 to 60 min mark. Uni did look good, but I left at 27-22 to Uni, so I assume they got even better.

I wasn't in prime viewing position though.

Interestingly, Brendan Cannon turned up to watch also.

Did Hanson play for uni? Cause he is cousins with Canno. Hmmm his bro-in-law may also have been playing? A Purcell in the pack?

Even though its disappointing there is no Oz A program this year, I am glad to see squad Wallabies and Oz A players (eg Hardman) playing club footy. It means that club footy is closer to filling the gap that has almost always existed and was left when the ARC was axed.

Thanks for the updates lads.

How good is David Croft????

Brothers coach Zane Hilton expects to see a lift in intensity on Saturday at Crosby Park against Sunnybank as the Brethren try to build momentum heading into finals.

Entering Round 14 of the Premier Rugby competition, the Brethren are being challenged for top spot on the ladder for the first time this year.

The Brethren have a game in hand but now sit in equal first alongside Souths on 41 points, with Easts a further one competition point behind.

"We need to be at another level come finals time but we are extremely happy with where we are at in terms of the way the team is developing," Hilton said.

"We had a bit of freshen up week last week with our training, so we're really keen for Saturday. It has been a while since we've been home and the boys are just jumping out of their skin to play."

Aiding their cause is the return of former QR Reds leader David Croft, who opted to play for the Brothers reserve grade team last weekend after a two week sabbatical overseas.

Australian Under 20 and QAS Reds Academy representative Jake Schatz has been given the responsibility of going toe-to-toe with Croft and of securing clean ball for Sunnybank's firepower out wide.

Last week's inclusion of Reds backs Ben Lucas and Mark McLinden, and iRB Junior World Player of the Year finalist Richard Kingi failed to present a 17-7 loss to Norths.

But Hilton is expecting a far more coherent and polished performance from the Dragons' stars this weekend following their first full hitout together.

"That scoreline from Norths doesn't really do us any favours," he said.

"I'd imagine that Sunnybank side is going to be very fired up to play, especially in the dry. They'll have a massive crack and we're expecting big things from them."

While Sunnybank lost to Norths and GPS in their past two outings, playmaker Ben Lucas has been a standout performer for the Dragons. Lucas has again been named at flyhalf, creating a formidable inside backs trio with Kingi and Charlie Fetoai.

But Hilton is also wary of the strong Dragons forwards.

"We have to shut down their midfield, but they are a very strong team across the park," he said.

"We respect their forward pack immensely and we're expecting a big battle come scrum time. At lineout, with guys like Tom Murday, they're going to be very strong.

"Then you have (Mark) McLinden in counterattack, so they can do anything on their day."

Hilton expects the full-time return of Reds hooker Sean Hardman to add another dimension to the Brothers pack, especially with the team's struggles at set-piece following the long term loss of tighthead Adrian Dixon.

"We really need to improve at scrum time, there is no doubt about it. We're under no illusion that teams will try to target us there.

"We've moved Dan Kilmartin from loosehead to tighthead, which he has never played before.

"But from Dan's perspective it is great having Sean there - the knowledge he will gain from playing alongside the most capped Red is invaluable."

In their first encounter this season Brothers demolished the Dragons 69-16.

Looks like Schatz has been named at openside too, which is interesting.

Getting back their Reds did little for the Bank. Still got touched up by Brothers. Uni's Reds obviously made a difference as they upset second placed Souths, who had Cooper, the Fainga'a's and Kennedy playing. Easts with no big names apart from Andrew Walker blitzed GPS48-3 and are coming into the sort of form needed to defend the flag.
