    Super Rugby General Chat

Storm probably get first call on the stadium as well, so they hold it before there are any Storm games to stuff up the weekend

It's something like $300,000 guaranteed for each team who lose a home game Tax payer funds Visit Victoria. VV pay TEG. TEG pay the teams via the unions. All designed to increase tourism spend in Victoria. TEG carries the risks on ticket sales

If we can find a promotor and producer who pays everyone as much as TEG Sport pay to host in Melbourne, then they'd move without looking back. I suspect we can't find that though

Round 2: Reds v Canes. Sunday.

Hard to be too critical after 86 mins, but I think Liam Wright would expect better of himself with the final tackle. A player with Wallaby aspirations has to put a better shot on the ball carrier on the line to save the match there. How good was McReight though, especially the chase back 100m...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Nobody knows those except for the Stan employees

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

I think what it actually does is dispell the myth that FTA coverage is going to save our sport. We need a lot more than just that.

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

1st is "REACH" everyone who watched for a minute. 2nd is "total audience" closest to the old ratings number, 3rd is who watched a replay All of this is only the subset of 16-39 year old viewers though. Didn't make top 30 list for all viewers

Yeah, tackle was already made before he latches on. Very tough

What rugby needs to do to get back to its roots and entertain customers.

In the middle of an otherwise excellent Highlanders v Blues, from 49:00 on the match clock through around 60 mins, we had almost 15 mins real time of scrum resets, penalty kicks at goal, kick-off and handbags. There was barely a tackle or a pass, and the only reason there was even that much...

    Australian Rugby / RA

The other context to add to this is And South Africa did some clever moves with how much their broadcasters paid for Super Rugby (split) v Curry Cup (not split) as well

What rugby needs to do to get back to its roots and entertain customers.

I think it's even easier Just add one word in the PT law to match the existing foul play law Foul play principle

    Australian Rugby / RA

Yeah - it's even bigger difference than it first appears because Nine/Stan are paying for test matches too, and in the past that made up a vast majority of what the broadcasters were paying for

There's also Champions Cup, Challenge Cup, and Premiership Rugby Cup fixtures to consider as well Exeter played 34 games in 22/23 One of those things - if you make money each game, then the more games the better. If you lose money each game, then more games sends you broke quicker

What rugby needs to do to get back to its roots and entertain customers.

I'd be in favour of removing the "double-penalty" of PT and yellow card, if we got a lot stricter with yellow cards for professional or deliberate penalties, including those that result in PT. So "accidental" penalty that results in a PT (eg timing etc) is no YC, but deliberate fouls would be -...

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

I assume the board mistakenly thought he offered some kind of income tax deductions

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Matildas continue to do big numbers on FTA. 2m+ reach and nearly 1m total audience Really just goes to show that nothing else beats having a winning, likeable team

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Players salaries haven't sent the Rebels to the wall, even in 2022 they received $4.7m to cover $4.95m (90% of the salary cap). They haven't been able to generate sufficient other revenue to cover the approx $9m /year on top of player payments that it costs to run a Super Rugby team. It's not...

There's a reason this is getting floated in a NZ paper. 11 teams is 5 games / week v 6 (etc etc with byes). Less revenue. NZRU want to maintain the current broadcast deal (6 games), without impacting their expense base (ie they don't want to have to fund another team).

    Rugby in the Pacific Islands

Yeah, the government doesn't care at all about rugby. They have just determined this is the best way to exert a bit of soft power using taxpay funds from the Dept of Foreign Affairs and Trade budget
