There is more free to air coverage in Australia now than there has ever been. There is pretty much universal free to air access across the country to 18(?) Super Rugby games and 12 (?) test matches each year. I don't see how you could conclude that that has resulted in higher viewership?

There are far more pro league players (in the true sense of the word - accepting any money to pay) in Australia than just those playing in the NRL though.

I'm guessing the Super rugby teams aren't particularly interested in an opposition player knowing all their lineout calls, defensive structures, backline moves etc etc
