    New Zealand vs France

I don't think you even bother to read my posts or the link I included, which is disappointing. Last try. There was a specific directive to SANZAR referees in the Super 15 to deem a second early engagement as repeated infringing. Such a directive was not issued by the IRB but by SANZAR. In...

    New Zealand vs France

Yes we understand that Rassie, but I'm afraid if you hadn't noticed that referees in Super XV have moved from FK to PK for simple early engages after the first one then you haven't been paying attention. It has been a talking point all year. I can't find anything official on it, but here is...

There is way too much ref "coaching" out there

Actually that was a week later against the Highlanders, where he had a complete breakdown. I think Jonathon White felt sorry for him so maybe pity is something he could aim for.

There is way too much ref "coaching" out there

It usually does more harm than good anyway. The best captains are ones who have the odd discriminating word to the ref 2-3 times per game. Those that bleat and moan end up pissing the ref off and then the ref will ignore you when you actually have a point. I can think of two classic cases...

    New Zealand vs France

Not really. Dan54 is right, there was a direction this year from SANZAR that for an early engage the first offence is a free kick, but any subsequent ones are penalties as they are to be considered deliberate (ie foul play under deliberate infringing law). Personally, I don't like it being so...

Force vs B&I Lions - Wed. 5 Jun

I wonder if there is not a divide between people who see games like this as warm up games for the Tests, and those that see these games as valuable in and of themselves. For me, this is the tour every bit as much as the Tests, but I can see that some don't really think that.

    What's your point?

Force vs B&I Lions - Wed. 5 Jun

And when Hawkes Bay beat them in 1993, they did so from the second division of the NPC. Not only did they not have any test players, they didn't even have any players that would have made a Super Rugby team (had that competition existed at the time). Any team that is playing for the first time...

Thoughts on a Possible Law Change

Oh yes, and that is pretty much how I operate as well. There's no doubt that this is the best way to manage offending under the current system. It does leave us open to the complaint that sometimes by the time we get around to actually taking action it is too late. Certainly that is the...

Thoughts on a Possible Law Change

Kind of a tautological thing to say though isn't it? I mean everyone can agree with the statement that "if they deserve 10 minutes in the bin" then they will get 10 minutes in the bin. The issue that I have often wondered out loud about is that 10 minutes in the bin is often a punishment...

Thoughts on a Possible Law Change

Except that it doesn't really act as a deterrent because refs don't want to do it. You can demand that the refs use it more often if you like, but I'll bet many refs agree with me and think that 10 mins is too long for the crime and simply won't. Hence the suggestion to give refs more...

Thoughts on a Possible Law Change

I wouldn't like to see automatic sin bins for infringements, but I would like to see the referee get the option of putting someone in the bin for a much shorter time than 10 minutes. Perhaps something along the lines of (the lessor of) 3 minutes or the other team scoring a try. I say this...

All Blacks - From Pillars to Stonewalls

Obviously my position as a contributor here has become untenable. Good luck to everybody, I have enjoyed my time here for the most part and have appreciated the discourse, despite the fact that we have not always agreed. I have been known to post on other forums, including rugby ones...

All Blacks - From Pillars to Stonewalls

Jay started the topic by saying: "Nah, the ruck wasn't formed, McCaw was the tackler so doesn't have to come through the gate." HKTiger is hedging "in reality it's what Allain thought at the time that counts." I don't know what IS thinks, but we have had a rational discussion referencing the...

As far as I can tell, nobody is positively asserting it is a ruck except you.

All Blacks - From Pillars to Stonewalls

Well I am not entirely sold on the idea myself. I posted the link earlier but I guess people missed it. http://www.sareferees.com/laws/view/2829674/ Note that they are explicit in describing this an offence at a tackle.. I think in that example you can see what they are going for because...

All Blacks - From Pillars to Stonewalls

Whether this is a ruck or not is totally irrelevant because he was penalised for getting in the way of the halfback, which is, at least if you agree with the SAReferees blog, an offence at a tackle (it is also an offence at a ruck). I should think that all would agree that if black 7 got up...

All Blacks - From Pillars to Stonewalls

????? It happens all the time and at every level of the game. 99% of the time the player gets clobbered out of the way, which of course is exactly what happened here. And I will leave it for others to determine whether I am making an arse of myself or not, and whether or not your "anyone...

South Africa - from playing hard to maiming

What he is waiting for is for a South African to say something along the lines of "The Springboks aren't the dirtiest team in the world" at which point he will say "people who deny this self-evident truth are delusional - I'm finished with this thread". He's trolling Scarfman, and its a bit...

All Blacks - From Pillars to Stonewalls

I don't want to be unnecessarily contrarian, but at no point does the word "ruck" emerge from Rolland's lips. I do not think he believes its a ruck, and the offence which he describes is a tackle offence. He says "... you knew exactly what you were doing, when you were standing up you got in...
