Except with 4 teams, reduced ratings, pressures on sporting broadcast rights and the threat of SA moving to Europe (probably less likely due to the Pro14 involvement being less successful than planned) they are going to get a lot less money than last time.

Well, if several differing quotes from both the Pro 14 and SARU are to be believed both parties are pretty keen to continue the transition.

So CBS (owners of Ten) have signed on to broadcast the new US rugby comp. meanwhile Ten have zero local sports content.

With the BBL, Ten showed they know how to turn around a faltering competition.

faint hope perhaps???

A multi year deal with MLR. Same with ESPN and AT&T. If the games on the channel prove popular enough then it could prompt CBS (who have a whole bunch of money) could look to buy further properties in the future. There is even some suggestion that the purchase of Ten is a precursor of the launch of the CBS On Demand service (likely wrapped in the Ten logo) here in Australia. And while many traditional TV companies have struggled with the pivot to streaming in the US. CBS has been rather successful in adapting to the new environment.

One thing we can assume from the content of the Commonwealth Games telecasts. Namely, we only want to watch events which are dominated by, and preferably won by, Australians.

Unlike you, I have only lived in five countries. But from what little I have seen Australia wins hands down for self-centred sports broadcasting.

You must have moved around a lot!

You lived in Hong Kong right? Has it ever actually been a country in it's own right at any time in it's history? At best as far as I'm aware it's been an autonomous region but that doesn't qualify nationhood. Either way, as with your experiences in Hong Kong and the status of Rugby in the region some 25 years ago I fail to see the relevance of your living in 4 different countries plus one autonomous zone.

Of course countries want to see their athletes compete and ideally win. If not what is the point of the whole commercial aspect to such events as the Olympics or the Comm Games? If they didn't have access to multiple feeds of different events then why the hell would they bother paying for the rights to broadcast the event in each country or even send a team of athletes to begin with?

Gold Medal = USA! USA! USA! Doesn't get much more self-centered than calling the Finals of your domestic comps the World Series. Straya get Silver but barely in the home straight when USA! USA! USA! cross the line.

No, no, no. Wamberal has lived in 5 countries don't you know. That simply isn't the case. It's only us and us alone who like watching our athletes compete. Everyone else is just happy to be there.

^^^^^ other than (presumably) Straya, the other countries he appears to have lived in probably were just happy to be there. It's hard to be OTT parochial unless you're actually winning a fair bit of the time :).

Without a doubt, the USA is significantly more parochial in their sport broadcasting than we are.............

In the Olympics for example, Australian broadcasters have always given significantly more airtime to non-Australian athletes, and events that we're not featured in than the Americans...........

And if the broadcast isn't in a friendly timezone for them........ fugghedaboutit!

It's not just them. I know it's the same in Canada and certainly in the UK. You cannot tell me the Russians don't like seeing their athletes win.

French are lunatics behind their own. Dutch a little more balanced but still lose it in the football. I'd say it's a common thread across Europe. Wales and Scotland map the same experience as England.

It's normal. And I don't think Australia stands out against pretty much any other sporting nation.

The point is not whether we are unique. The point is what it says about our sporting preferences.

And what it says is not good for our game.

We are quite clam.

One of my favourite vids its a soccer international between Greece & Russia in Greece. Greece score and shall we say the crowd gets a little excited.

The first 30 seconds is all you need to watch but its just unbelievably funny and the look on the Russian keeper towards the end is priceless.

Thought for the big ANZAC weekend we could have a few Aussie v Kiwi games but only one on this weekend, Reds v Chiefs and for the other Aussie teams, then three Aussie teams play in the SA conference and , well Sunwolves aren't an Aussie team, so who cares who they play

SANZAAR control the draw and they wouldn't have thought of any of this.
