I'd go even further and say poor governance/management is an Australian trait. Read a book called 'The Lucky Country'. We typically succeed despite ourselves.

In Rugby at least anyway. Australian rugby has coveted the NZ model of centralized governance for a few years now. The major stumbling block? State Unions hungry on power not wanting to lose their "autonomy". I use quotes as the state unions still would have had major imput into how their professional arm was run and still had total control over grassroots and development. The only collateral damage would have been a few people on the gravy train at each franchise would have been let go due to restructure. The cost savings to the ARU under this model would have been in the range of $3-4 million per year.
One of many failings of Australian rugby administration.

OK. Thanks for the clarification.

Longer term, centralisation of the back offices of each Super Rugby side in Australia has to make sense. We need to pursue something closer to the NZ model.

The centralized model was what the Force signed up to through tne Alliance Agreement. Seeing as that has now lead to the Force being shafted every which way but sunday, i expect there to be strong resistance from the other franchises in adopting this model in the future. The ARU, through its incompetence in creating this situation and not knowing how to get itself out, has already limited its own options regarding how the future looks and how much trust is left with the remaining franchises.

Georgina suggests centralisation model cant work in Australia due to the power of the NSW and Qld.

Australia's governance model is a legacy of the sport's amateur roots. Rugby grew out of communities in Queensland and NSW and there its power base still resides. Certainly the ARU holds tight to the national purse strings, doling out broadcast and Test match revenue to the state unions and professional clubs. But under the constitution it can do very little to change the fundamental structure of the game without the approval of the Queensland and NSW rugby unions, who are the game's major voting members.

The article also confirms some Force fans assertion of unfair distribution of player top up funding.

And the Western Force moved into their new $17million facility in 2011...
https://www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au/Pages/Barnett/2011/07/New-rugby-headquarters-open.aspx
The facility features:
• multiple offices and large, open-plan administration area
• multiple meeting rooms/combined staff-player breakout area
• large team performance area
• theatrette
• elite change room area
• hydrotherapy and shower facilities
• strength and conditioning areas
• player lounge
• video room
• library
• massage, physiotherapy and sports medicine clinic for the Western Force
• multifunction media room
• merchandising retail area
• secure undercroft parking.

Jezz Reds should move to Perth

And they leased this for 5 Million for the next 30 years.

They paid 30 years rent in advance? Not the sort of business decision you want to brag about.

But players will walk about 100 metres to the refectory on the university's main campus, a deliberate step, says general manager Simon Chester, to foster interaction with the university community.

Canberra - mid winter. The players take a jaunty stroll through a freezing blizzard doffing their head-gear at the common folk on their way to a recovery session in a communal ice bath.

Ballymore ? Was it ever renovated ? Does it gave a trophy cabinet ?

Are you here to discuss the topic or do you just want to continually deflect the issue and turn this into a parochial debate?

Play funny buggers all you like, but there's no point pretending that the finances of Australian Super rugby teams are in a healthy state at all, even though you like to think otherwise, the Brumbies are also in a precarious state. My point on equity is that the Brumbies hold zero equity in their new facilities, they have paid $5million upfront rent in a $15million facility but don't own any of the facility. I'm not sure what the logic behind that deal was. But lack of equity, and having spent all of the remaining proceeds from the sale of Griffith means the Brumbies have nothing to fall back on. And as mentioned previously, the annual losses at the Brumbies over the past 4 years have been similar to that of the Western Force.

All paid in advance for 30 years... Less annual costs out but basics...I an sure after the 30 year lease is up the Brumbies will move to a better property... A

A strange deal considering the Canberra Raiders pay a $1/year peppercorn rent in the same suburb.

And what happened to the $4million leftover which was going to be used to establish a fund called the Brumbies Rugby Provident Fund, a fund to invest in the future of ACT rugby.

The ARU is not the only sporting body in this country facing a revolt..........

Australia's best netballers are threatening strike action this weekend, a Super Netball breakaway to form a rebel competition and a boycott of Diamonds games for the rest of the year unless the state associations re-elect threatened board member Kathryn Harby-Williams at Friday's Netball Australia annual general meeting.

Reading about McCusker on Wikipedia:

"In October 1997, he was involved in the rescue of two men, including former Australian rules footballer Brian Sierakowski, whose surf ski had been bitten in half by a five-metre (16-foot) long white pointer shark 50 metres (160 ft) off of Cottesloe Beach."

5m Great White......... and he went out there on his own paddle board to help him
