The pack is still decent and the backs will improve with Sias and Godwin in the inside backs next year. Still don't have a coach though and that is the thing that worries me most.

The ARU are to blame for those problems. I'd be interesting to know what the difference between WA and Queensland is in ratio of player numbers to funding from ARU. You also can't argue that that two 'Super Academies' aren't massively biased towards Queensland and NSW.

There are plenty more problems that RugbyWA are to blame for though.

The ARU hasn't been helpful (look at the funding for WA vs. the rest of the country), but the ARU hasn't screwed up negotiations with EVERY major potential signing in the past year, have they? RugbyWA's executive management is incompetent and should be wiped out en masse. It's not the coaches, it's not the players, it's not the support staff, and it's not the fans who are the primary problems. It starts at the top.

Until the problem is fixed at the top, why would anyone - coach or player - want to come to work or play for the Force when they've seen what's happened over the past year with the management of the organization? At this point, they're EXPECTED to screw up every time they make a move.

Harsh words Nipper, but with a significant helping of truth. I think we've reached a point where a serious examination of the management of RugbyWA and its direction must take place. I still love the code and love the Force, but times like these test the patience even of diehards like myself.

I'm in the same boat - but being a die-hard doesn't mean you can't be critical of some obvious failings. Blind allegiance doesn't help anyone. That said, I wouldn't make a habit of criticizing the players. It's not like the players aren't putting the effort in. THEY didn't stuff up recruitment and retention in much-needed areas. They're just not getting /support from their "bosses" in the front office.

I'll still support the team (perhaps begrudgingly) even if Vern Reid and Co. are still in the front office next season.

It does seem like the inmates are running the asylum at RugbyWA.

If Vern needs to go what would be the process? Who is able to sack him? Serious question.

The ARU will have to stop sitting on their hands and do something big, otherwise the only way now is down for the Force.

does the ARU actually have the ability to step in, they have only done it in the past on financial grounds. I'm sure they can make a phone call, but as long as the force aren't going bankrupt are they actually breaking any contractual obligations that the ARU can overrule?

Sure the ARU stepped in to help Queensland financially and I'm sure they would do the same for the Force. The Tahs though seem to be next in line for help with this problem. The Forces problem at the moment is completely different.

What help do you think they should be providing?

I do not know. However, if we all agree that there should be five franchises, then it is pretty obvious that, on a population basis, in terms of rugby history, and proximity to the breeding ground of player talent, Perth is always going to be the weakest of them all.

Some sort of strategic review is called for, in my opinion. For the sake of the game, either the Force must be competitive, or it must be disbanded. We should do whatever it takes to make them competitive, and keep them that way. The alternative is too sad to contemplate.

Your point being? Short memories in Queensland.

Yeah the ARU helped us financially - that is absolutely true. The real issue with the Force is its management isn't it? I don't see how the ARU has the power to get involved in the management of a franchise though.

I agree that the Force would benefit from some recruitment concessions but, apart from that, what is the ARU to do?

As a Victorian, I was a little cynical of ARU motives when Perth won the franchise bid over what at the time was reportedly a far more compelling business case by Melbourne. I couldn't help thinking the ARU thought they needed to grab Perth now and that Melbourne would still be there in a few years.

The flipside of that is that it is in my opinion incumbent on ARU to do everythIng in its power to help the Force grow, or many rugby fans trust will be betrayed.

I am not blaming the ARU for Force woes The Genia debacle will, I fear be the critical event that brought them crashing down. My cynicism also extends to various Qld entities, but you can hardly be surprised if Qld powerbrokers do their utmost to keep Genia. You can criticise Force mngt for their naievete.

I do think the ARU are obliged to give Force every opportunity and to think very carefully about a plan b if Force crash.

Yes but what do people want the ARU to do? I'm not having a go - I genuinely don't understand what the ARU has the power to do apart from recruitment concessions.
