The long pauses in calls by the refs is the reason for better scrums IMO. Makes sure that both sides are completely balanced and therefore all in strong and balanced positions as they prepare for the hit.

Tahs scrum absolutely dominated the Reds. Brilliant ball for the backs at every scrum. Such a strong hit and push by the Tahs at just about every scrummage.

TPN, Douglas and Tommy Carter were best for the Tahs IMO.

I said during the week that I thought the pack for the Reds was very unbalanced. To me it looked ponderous and I questioned whether they could match the mobility of the Tahs and with the addition of the weight and strength training, the physicallity of the Tahs. Seems I was right to have those doubts as they got annihilated in defence and at the breakdown.

As with last week even with four jumpers the Reds were not secure on their own lineout turning over two throws and the Tahs competing effectively on many others. The advantages that the Reds should have gained at this set piece were far outweighed by the draw backs which I already outlined, and given the fact that the Tahs won all their lineouts you could say the stacking of their pack is a failure.

One last point all last year and pre-season I have bagged Tom Carter at every turn. On the balance of the last two weeks I must say, he has earned my respect. He has developed his game from last year in ways I did not think he was capable of and for the first time I can remember he has not been involved in any stupid handbag rubbish or carrying on like a fool. Well done TC.

After last night and tonight i really think we should take barnes to the world cup. QC (Quade Cooper) can to used as a bench weapon and gits can run the water.

Let's talk scrum time. How refreshing was it to see very few resets?

Tahs dominant. Even when Big Al went off and Kepu went to THP the Tahs were still dominant. Shit I hope Deans has watched the games this weekend. Ma'afu gets 10 minutes only for the Ponies and wrongly or rightly (mostly wrongly because Kaplan is a crap ref) loses the game for the Ponies and loses the Brumbies scrum dominance against another set of rejected props in Weeks & Henderson. The Tahs dominant with two rejected props against his selected front row of last year.

Love it.

Barnes has always played test match rugby, he plays the numbers and is "conservative", if that means trying to build pressure to win matches

Even I would look good at 10 behind that pack. Cooper was going backwards all night and his outside men weren't helping one bit (how bad have Chambers and AFaingaa been?). As much as BB won the battle of the 10s, I don't think we can take too much away.

Good game. Don't blame the ref.
Horne and TPN massive on defense.
Fantastic

I wouldn't be too down on Quade - he did not lose that game in any way. The Reds pack was back-pedalling much of the night, the Tah defence was way more aggressive and just never really let Genia, and thus Cooper get on the front foot. This issue of hiding him in defence, however, is fraught with problems for me. He does not look to have done anything about it in the off season, which is disappointing.

Cyclo, I said that last week. How long can he be carried. The Tahs showed tonight and the Rebels showed last night that defence can and will get you points. If Cooper does not have at least parity from his pigs he is a big liability as he has shown thus far he is not up to the defensive requirements that such a situation will put on him. Can we expect the Wallabies pack to be dominant against the ABs and Boks, or England?

I also think that Cooper is suffering in that he has no real tactical kicker in the backline. The closest the Reds have is Hynes and he has not been anywhere near the class of Barnes and Beale, and then Turner and Mitchell also kicked well to keep the Reds pinned down.

Cooper may be able to be carried as long as Barnes is at 12 to organise the defence and take care of the tactical kicking.

Congratulations Tah's fans on a much deserved win. I hope the Horwill injury is nothing serious. Douglas replacing Simmons is getting way ahead of yourselves who ever said it. Amongst a dull Reds performance he was a shining light plus it would be unwise to waste last years development of him in a world cup year. The Tahs carried the extra weight well and more importantly they used it well.

I would have given MOM to Horne over TPN althou he was great. Horne was awsome in both defence and attack.

I'm going to suggest an alternate backline for the Reds next match due to the poor form of their centres:
9. Genia
10. Cooper
11. Toua
12. Tapuai
13. Ioane
14. Davies/(Shipperley,Morahan,Sitauti)
15. Hynes

Depending on whether or not Davies is injured

I thought ant and chambers have been really poor so far and Chambers is looking really bad atm. Taps can provide a more physical alternative at 12 and Toua was electric today although he had a few fuck ups.

As against that, how disappointing to see so few scrums.

It seemed to take forever before we saw one, and the Reds seemed to struggle with the cadence early on. And of course with the Tahs! The closest to competitive Reds scrum looked to be with Slipper and Holmes - though attrition was affecting both sides by then.

TPN said mentioned on the sideline with that shoulder injury in the second half about the tremendous pressure coming through from the Tahs pushing behind him. I can believe it.

Wow, that was an amazing performance. Hopefully TPN and Phil Waugh (and Horwill) are OK.

Why not. Show me where Simmons had the impact that Douglas had. Douglas was immense in defence, very good in the Lineout, strong scrum (which TPN commented on, the back 5 driving the front row forward) and made metres when he ran with the ball. Simmons in contrast was no where to be seen in a defeated pack, they did not capitulate French style, but they were soubdly defeated in all aspects of play, man for man.

I wouldn't mind trying Harris at inside centre next week. Copper is a marked man, so lets see if we can open up some options. Give Hanson a run at Hooker, leroy back to 8 and Robinson into 7. Let's try Gill on the bench.

When your forwards are on roller skates, it is pretty hard to blame the backs.

The pigs were the problem, they need a proper fetcher and to roll their bloody sleeves up and get at it. Too much one out running, not enough working as a pack.

You can put whoever you want in that Reds backline and it ain't going anywhere if they keep getting so comprehensively dicked in the forwards

Get on bended knee and beg Mooney to come back and coach the backs. He was able to get the backs going forward in 2008 behind a worse pack than this one.
