It will be worth comparing physiques of the back row. Waiting for the Safers. Our blokes:
6. Hanigan 194cm; 110kg
7. Hooper 182 cm; 101kg
8. McMahon 186cm; 100kg
Total ------------------ 311kg
20. Dempsey 191cm; 109kg
Match up Safers later.
6. Siya Kolisi 188cm; 105 kg
7. Jaco Kriel 184cm; 97kg
8. Uzair Cassiem 189cm; 108 kg
Total 310kg
20 Jean-Luc du Preeze 194cm; 113kg
On those figures I was wrong. WB back row is not so small/light after all.
Edit: BH beat me to it though.
Killer, from Wikipedia:
Speight 1.86m and 97 kg;
Koroibete 1.8m and 93 kg.
Speight is marginally the bigger, and imo plays bigger. Koroibete might be the faster.
It's conceivable that McMahon could string together the sort of form that pushes Hooper to the bench and he combines with Pocock in the future, but it is really hard to pinpoint any games where Pocock has played 8 and hasn't performed better than any traditional number 8s we have fielded otherwise.
To be honest I didn't think both Kriel and Kolisi would work either but it's going OK so far. May not work so well against the Wallabies & All Blacks but I think any loosie's effectiveness relies somewhat on the performance of the tight 5 so there may be something in that.Hooper and Pocock worked ay RWC 2015 - 2 years ago
Both should never be on the paddock together. That's a joke and Chek playing his favourite game. Pick the best 7 between the two of them.
Pick the best 6 and 8 on their own merits. Don't play blokes out of position - it rarely succeeds
Coach the three of them into a formidable combination and some of the Wallaby problems will be solved.
People keep saying this but we haven't had a number 8 who has consistently strung good test matches together for a very long time.Hooper and Pocock worked ay RWC 2015 - 2 years ago

Find me that player and I will say that we should select them every time.
Until we find that player I am open to playing a 7 out of position because they are a substantially better rugby player than the traditional 8 we have available to us.
If we were rating the number 8 performances this year, McMahon's game last week was better than any of the three tests started by a traditional 8 in June.

I would think Higgers would be a better 6 than Hanigan (by far) as well as a better overall 8 than McMahon (although he went pretty well in Bled 2 - and was shit in Bled 1) or Timani.
