I'd be shocked if Vickerman didn't make the world cup squad. He'll definitely have to pull his finger out over the next 3 months, but a fit Vickerman gives us genuine depth in the second row. We need another lineout general as a backup for Sharpe and they dont come any better than vicks.

Yeah but the thing with Vickerman is that, if he wasn't up to the task he wouldn't put himself into the position to embarrass himself. The bloke is intelligent, and very professional. I am not sure at this stage if he can get ahead of Sharpe on the pecking order but rest assured he is the fourth best lock in Australia without even lacing up a boot.

In spite of the fact that Vicks is a proven big time player, I don't think he should just waltz back into the test team, given the length of time he has been out of international rugby. It would go against everything Wallaby selection should be about. With that said, if he gets some game time for the Tahs (hopefully they can play finals footy), we'll see how good the big fella still is. I'm hoping that he's still more or less the player we once saw, but you never know. He'll certainly get some games for Uni and will be in the wider squad. I can't imagine Deans taking a massive punt without getting a good look at him.

Can't wait 'till we can finally dump Sharpie. Might have a decent scrum for once. Return of the '09 scrum.

Vickerman has even less chance to prove himself for the Wallabies than Elsom.

If the Tahs make the finals he's not allowed to play.

So after playing next to no top grade rugby for three years he'll be judged on one Super rugby appearance and club rugby...

How so? Is there some rule on that?

Apparently, players are only eligible for the playoffs if they've played it an least three games of the regular season...

If Vickerman miraculously gets back to his form of old, then I would think Horwill would be the one in trouble...

His physicality has stepped up recently, and he's played a lot more rugby than Horwill the past couple of years...

Sharpe's scrummaging may be weak, but if Vickerman was actually back in form he would play the TH lock role...

And let's not forget that lineouts are probably more important...

Australia had a strong scrum in '09, but their lineout went to shite for the first time in years and it's easy for opposing teams to just go for touch to exploit that...

Speaking of physicality, let's not bring up Vickerman's last performance in a World Cup playoff...

So Sharpe's performance was more physical? Vickerman suplexed some dude.

Scrums are definitely more important than lineouts. Especially in a WC context.

Vickerman hasn't played at any level in months and months, while I'd love to see him back to full fitness in time for the WC I am seriously doubting that it's going to happen. Having said that, there must be some reason he's decided to come back.

He finished his degree, and he and his Australian wife and son live in Sydney.

Personally I rate Vickerman and hope he can re-capture his best but I am wondering who is going to replace Sharpe as the midfield ball runner if he is replaced by Vickerman in the test team?
Whilst Sharpe may not be a strong scrummager and a combo of Horwill and Vickerman may be a stronger partnership, neither Vickerman or Horwill are noted ball runners and neither has ever been utilised in this role from what I recall. I think if Vickerman forces his way into the side at the expense of Sharpe this will result in Deans having to change the Wallabies play in some ways because more often than not over the last 2-3 seasons when the Wallabies go wide and run through the phases it usually involves Sharpe crashing it up in midfield (which he does quite well IMO).
It will be interesting to see what happens.

Gee, if that's correct, could be some tough issues for the Reds ahead of the finals, with the backs injury load we are carrying late in the season. Lance for example will only play 2 games max pre finals.

Um, there's plenty of locks that are better ball carriers than Sharpe and Horwill is certainly one of them.
