Gee, if that's correct, could be some tough issues for the Reds ahead of the finals, with the backs injury load we are carrying late in the season. Lance for example will only play 2 games max pre finals.

I'm going to assume once again it's for players that are signed mid-season and not already in the squad/academy.

Um, there's plenty of locks that are better ball carriers than Sharpe and Horwill is certainly one of them.

Sharpe is rated by his peers - as in other locks from his opposition like Matfield - as one of the best ball carriers the Wallabies have. And he was possibly the only forward (other than Pocock) last year that was willing to carry the ball into contact regularly, and make metres.

For the Force, Sharpe has made quality inroads into every defence, continually getting over the gain line when the other Force forwards were being knocked back, and that includes Wykes and Pocock.

It blows my mind that there is still discussion about Sharpie beyond "Thank god his injury is minor and he'll be wearing 4 against SA" The guy's not just Australia's best lock. He'd be contending for Australia's best player for the last two years and one of the best locks in the world.

What perturbs me more though is that the ARU didn't top up his contract. It's not like Waugh or Baxter who were getting pocket money as a thankyou for years of impeccable service. Sharpes going to be the first guy picked for the Wallabies for a couple of years yet and JON has shown a remarkable lack of foresight.

That's what I like about Sharpe. The job needed doing so he did it. He and Horwill will offer a good combination and stiffin our tighter game. Last year we had trouble finding Sharpe a partner, this year the right player is available.

Bring it on.

Technically there really isn't much discussion, most people know how valuable he is to the wallabies........... and then there is QWERTY.

Did he eventually get the top up? I thought I read in another thread the public out cry prompted them to give it to him.

I'm happy to be proven wrong and it seems I'm the only one who doesn't rate Sharpe. Fine, I'll leave it but I still think Deans will eventually dump him.

I can't see Sharpe being dropped at least this year. His leadership will be needed and he is playing incredibly this year (so far).

Sharpe is one of the best 2nd-rowers in the world at the moment. How some people can confidently say Vickerman will replace him after not seeing him play top-flight footy(Super Rugby) for two years is absolutely retarded.

Besides, on current form; Rob Simmons will replace Sharpe in WB's when Sharpe retires, not Vickerman...

Elsom, in all honesty, I wouldnt even pick him, not just for the fact he hasnt played any footy over this season but purely he is not the best 6 option in the country...that honour has to go with Higgenbottom, Brown as his back up and Samo to cover that position as well as Play 8...Palu to back him up, Pocock to play 7 with Beau Robinson his back up....and also throw in the mix McCalman and Hodgson so in all fairness, where does Elsom fit in?
Toutai Kefu has been throwing Ita Vaeas name in the mix but I dont think the time is right for him just yet.

It's good to see some folks supporting the estimable Sharpe. Perhaps the bagging of him last year was premature.

Just guessing.

Higginbotham likes to run with the ball a lot but does a fraction of the work Elsom and other 6s perform...

I wouldn't have him starting for the Wallabies until he learns to put in the hard work...

I agree, but if McCalman gets selected at 8, i would balance out the backrow as he does more of the grunt work

He is doing more these days, but he ain't no work rate whore.

I would like to see how he goes in a Tri Nations game and whether he can get through the work

Speaking of opportunities in the 2nd row, I have been impressed by the rapid rise of Sam Wykes.

The injuries are definatly starting to build up

Gone for 3N: Horne, Mitchell, Tatafu (apparently), Barnes, Palu,Hynes, Hoiles, Ma'afu, Edmonds
Currently Injured but due to return: Robinson, Morahan, Harris, Lucas, A.Fainga'a,Slipper, Baxter, Mowen, Pyle, Shepherd, Elsom

Hopefully we don't lose anymore players.

Also, for the initial 40 man squad, Deans has always picked one or two bolters (ie:Morahan,Dennis, Phipps ect). So I won't be suprised if some bolters like Timani/Pyle, Shatz, Longbottom, Charles, Saffy, Vaea get picked in that initial squad.
