Let's face it, whoever comes over as back cover isn't going to be starting, they will be providing cover. I think you can get away with taps, but he is a risk as he has never played a test. Carter ditto and he doesn't seem to be in Dingo's frame.

Hard to look past Giteau.

And yet I did. But I agree, Gits will be a central selection choice.

it would just be a very big call to go for an unproven test player. whoever gets called up will only be getting into a big game if there is an emergency, so I would have to think you'd want someone you know (giteau) slotting in over an unknown.

time will tell.

Most of the "whinging" was Aus pundits commenting that we weren't good enough at managing the game, Ireland were able to massage the game's tempo to suit themselves.

Our team, and captain, were not good enough or smart enough to counter it.

Spinning that into Aus arrogance by selective newspaper quoting is just dumb trolling

True, 99% of supporters are angry at their team for ineptitude performances and would say the Irish played a better and smarter game, they certainly won ugly and pushed the rules to the limit with their faux injuries but you work the ref, we didnt and let the Irish control the ref, thats our fault.
The scribes seem to represent nations these days, the hate pouring from Kiwis at the moment is something else, fueled by dumb artices from the usual suspects, the Irish are less so and having lived there, are very easy on Ozzies at times like this(our loss) the press reports that the whole country is up in arms is crap, more poor writing.
However nations that dont need much to overeact to these articles and turn it into a frenzy appear to have some other deep seated issues

Dear Irish,
If a favorite gets defeated in any sport, this that support the favorite ask why and often vent, it doesn't mean they don't respect the opposition, it means there upset with how there team played.

Now you say this doesn't relate because the Irish rugby team is at the same level as the Australian team, therefore talk of favorites is arrogant and disrespectful. If this is truly the case, then why is your win constantly being referred to in your media an amongst your fans as "famous". Wouldn't it be a "win" as "famous" would imply you achieved something great or unexpected, which if your talk of Ireland rugby being world class isn't the case. You have celebrated your win as an upset, get over quoting Aussie papers and concentrate on Italy and Russia, hate to see ono them having a "famous" win.

All nice to fantasize, but Smith is not eligible, under ARU rules.

I know... unless some kind of shady deal is made... which isn't going to happen...

It's just a shame the Brumbies didn't pursue him to play the last couple of games this year... for the greater good...

If we lose two or three centres, clearly we'll need at least one centre as cover. But surely even Blind Robbie can see we need an open side back up with truck loads of grunt. That certainly isn't Hodgson and it aint Mccalman either. It's gotta be Beau. Yes he looks like a set of traffic lights with a red face, yellow jersey and green shorts but at least the fucker is tough.

Is there anymore injured Waratahs players that haven't played in a long time we can add to the team?

I think the replacement players will rest largely on how Ant really is. If he is expected to be out for 2- 3 weeks as per the concussion guidelines I think they need to have a replacement who can play 12 and/ or 13. We all see the need for another specialist openside but we will see if Robbie is big enough to admit there was an error in the original squad selection.
I think we also need to think carefully about how these replacement players are going to be used. Are they really going just to play Russia or will they be needed later on..
I have to say I'm not sold on the idea of Giteau as a replacement- will he be happy just playing Russia then holding the tackle bags for the next 3 weeks (notice my optimism 3 weeks= final).
Given Horne and McCabe are gone my replacements are:
With Ant OK for quarter final action-
Beau Robinson & Ben Tapuai

With Ant gone for an extended period
Beau Robinson & Tom Carter

If Cliff Palu is gone as well that adds another dimension- my only preference here is not Richard Brown.

McCabe's injury might not be as serious... apparently his shoulder popped out and then back in again..

An aussie quoting the New Zeland Herald, and a kiwi quoting the Sydney Morning Herald. Love it :D

Come on guys, we all know these newspapers don't represent the views of either country! They are both utter crap!

On the topic. I reckon the Irish media just wish that we were bitter about the loss, and when we took it quite well they didn't want to change their story. So here we are, arguing over gutter journalism...
