Wallabies 2025

It depends... quality IP on any issue when working together is a value-add proposition, from everything to an additional sounding board, sharing workloads, analysing upcoming oppositions and providing feedback or monitoring different aspects of the team... the issue is if they don't see eye to eye, it then becomes regressive.

Schmidt in a DoR or consultancy role is not necessarily required for an experienced international coach, but I reckon it's probably vital for a first time one, which most of the candidates are. It's a big shift from club coaching and there's a set of mistakes first time international coaches pretty commonly make, so have someone who has been there and done that is a huge help. Schmidt is also a deep technical thinker and can provide a lot of strategic insight in building out game plan and strategy. Finally, if he's still employed by us that means New Zealand can't bring him back into the fold, which isn't necessarily a reason to keep him on, but it doesn't hurt.

Agree with everything you’ve said, I just don’t think have a formal title is a great move. It changes the expectation and implies that Schmidt would be a key influence.

By all means if JS still genuinely wants the wallabies to succeed, I’m sure he will pickup the phone and provide input when asked. But formally engaging him is risky going forward.

If the team is going well, there will be a level of expectation that it is because of Schmidt involvement and influence. If the side is going shit, it’ll be because this coach “isn’t listening to Joe” or they “arent on the same page” - I can see the headlines now.

^ not (just) trolling the Aucks, I really think Cotter would be a good fit for your blokes, esp if RA could persuade JS to hang around.

He'd be great, but he seems a bit less likely at the moment, particularly with time left on his contract that he'd need to be bought out. He also might want to stay close to home to death ride Robertson and swoop in if it all goes tits up. But they should definitely be talking to him to work out what it'll take to make it happen.

I do think O'Gara throwing his hat in the ring has rocketed him right up near the top of the list though, at least if he's keen to work with Schmidt.

Im leaning Cotter or Ogara or Joseph
I want to see more from larkham and something from kiss and Mckellar before they get the job. All young enough to come in 2028 after 3 years in a settle super rugby and out hands up for the top.

I can get Vern being an attractive candidate from who could be available but his success as an international coach isn't extraordinary.
It's a while ago now and he may be a better coach these days but Scotland and Aus are fairly comparable in player pool and resource. He wasn't renewed with Scotland after 36 Tests with a win rate of 52%. 0 wins v Aus, NZ, RSA and Eng in 8 Tests and 3 wins from 11 v Fra, Ire and Wales.

It would be a journeyman signing that would probably keep us just treading water.

O'Gara is leap we may need to take to keep momentum and some buzz in the game about what could be.

Cotter extended his contract to 2026 at the end of last year and prefers to work on rolling two year contracts, apparently.

“I like two years,” Cotter told the Herald after re-signing. “Three years is neither here nor there. Are you planning for the future or trying to become better and win a competition? I like to get stuck in.”

“I signed a two-year contract in Clermont and ended up staying eight years. I like the mindset of going in for two and if everyone is happy and you enjoy it you can look to extend. That’s what happened this year.”

But, if you do want to buy out the contract...

Wasn't he instrumental in their development from easy beats to reasonably strong, similar to the work Schmidt did with Ireland?

I think 52% is pretty good for a team like Scotland. I don't think we've achieved that in quite a while.

Kiss - obviously a good coach and good man but no real record of success other than a good win loss.

Larkham and McKellar - track records of success but only at the Brumbies, where everyone has a track record of success, and really it’s just winning the Aus conference.

I’ll be disappointed if we don’t get someone who has actually won something.

He got 3/3 over Argentina then 2 v US, 1 v Can which help it.

Probably the start of their resurgence that in reality is built of recruitment as their youth sides (U20) have been worse.

Yeah it's when their poaching really hit its stride but I think they also adopted better coaching practices and the like.

The poaching makes them very easy to dislike at the moment.
