Dude what? It’s a free market society. Besides, they could just do the exact same to us.
Sure they can. That would be great and it totally negates this:

How do you know. Rugby isn't a party to the contract.

Might even include a clause that prevents either the player or club announcing or acknowledging it until X date.

If league do exactly the same thing, then union will know and won't have to waste energy on a kid who doesn't really want to play rugby. We can focus on the kids who do actually want to stick around.

This idea of giving kids who aren’t selected on form a go because they love the sport is really preposterous to me.

100% agree. The idea that there isn’t another kid waiting in the wings that couldn’t benefit from the opportunity of playing rep footy is preposterous. There is enough good talent out there wanting to play Rugby. The argument that by giving the NRL signings a taste of Wallaby footy will bring them back into the fold at a later date is a flawed argument. Apart from Sua’ili’i how has that gone for Australian Rugby? Put more value in the Gold jersey and only make it available to those not signed to ”the other“ code. Whilst you won’t stop all players defecting to league, you will make some think twice about signing.
Wright and Elson come to mind straight away. Heaps of guys playing pro rugby right now have in one way or another associated with League. Several current wallabies have played in the NRL or have a league background. It’s an idealistic view to think otherwise. High performance organisations don’t give people a go because they are honest toilers. Besides, a lot of those kids not signed with League just weren’t offered a contract. Lie detector machines next?

Agree, Yes they would, but the competitor would not allow it unless is was to their advantage. So it’s clear that rugby league believes there is advantage in having their professionally contracted players participate in rugby rep games. It’s a zero sum game, that is to rugby unions long term disadvantage. Union misses the opportunity to provide development for a player who is more likely to stay in the hand.
Rugby league don’t give a flying fuck about playing Union. They want their prospects in those school environments not about the sport. They’d love it if they played League.

It’s not the argument. These kids have been deemed the best in the position in Rugby. I was merely saying that a by product can be a positive attitude towards Rugby. It’s not about swinging a kid to the sport so let’s pick them in a rep team. If the Rugby kid through and through is good enough then they should earn the spot ahead of the league kid which has happened plenty.

Very poor turnout at Super 16 & 19s grand finals held at Ballymore today ; why??
was at the game, was actually pretty good crowd, probably 2 to 3 thousand. The big Eastern stand is not open and the cameras are set up in the stand on the opposite side of the field where everyone sits so you probably don't see the people on broadcast.

Your own post #341 as the most recent example on this very page? Not sure I can engage with you any more sorry.
I have never said anything like "giving kids who aren’t selected on form a go because they love the sport" which is why you can't quote it. You made that up because what post 341 actually says is:

"We can focus on the kids who do actually want to stick around."

Why do people want to pick league players to represent you in union? I can understand from a state perspective maybe but nationally? It so ridiculous that this line of thinking has even permeated into the top level with someone suggesting Cleary could take a sabbatical during a world cup year to play for the Wallabies.

If you only have 1 form player in the whole country, in a position being filled by a guy going to league, then you really have bigger problems than just kids signing to NRL clubs.

Someone was HMAC the big Dawg and he's a fucking clown. I think both Rugby and League had a laugh at that. I hope HMAC did as well over some Portuguese Chicken.

Anyways, this argument will be fun next year, then the year after and the year after that. Rugby won't keep every kid. That's fine and not every kid in these teams deserves a professional contract either. That's fine. As long as Rugby can get most of what they need I think it's a good thing. Rugby isn't the big kid on the block. The siging on Makasini to a pro NRL deal also isn't devastating IMO. Teenage Winger isn't going to solve any problems.

Yes. It’s true that NRL clubs want the kids at these schools because of the disciplined environment. Perhaps the GPS should consider the implications of that and make the most of situation in a commercial sense. Charge 2 x or something.

Think the Schools most in play with these students enrolled like them on the footy team so wouldn't do it even though many would like to see that happen I'm sure.

Did they receive a contract offer from a super club? Do we want to win rep games? Idealistically I think we are too far apart and we just don’t know the thought processes of these children so I’m out of this thread from now.
Winning junior rep games is wonderfully myopic, the goal should be developing players to win senior rep games (where the money is made to develop the junior players). That implies that money should not be wasted on players that have a low probability of playing at a senior level. That includes anyone affiliated with the NRL, for all the players that do return to union x 20 never do …. So why thow funding at them.

Sometimes I actually hypothesise that selectors are preferencing League leaning players in the hope that they’ll consider staying close to Union, to the detriment of Union loyal peers who are actually (a touch) better but the selectors know they will be back trying again next year….

If that’s true it’s backfired on them as I hear Lematrie and Poyton have both gone to league after being dropped at the last hurdle.
