U18 Academy Games and Australia U18s

The Ghost of Raelene

Shame Isaac Fonua hasn't been in these games. Injured?

One of the best talents in the country. Don't think it will affect his chances at selection for the Aus side too much though.

Only had it on for the past 10 minutes, but from a QLD perspective Finn Mackay looks very composed. Impressed as well in the game last week.

Isaiah Scheck is some talent. Genuinely big frame and can move.

QLD need to stop throwing to the back of the lineout. They have a heap of height and keep overcooking it when going to 6.

I think the whole QLD backline were impressive today and outplayed the NSW backline. Very disappointing line outs from both sides.

When NSW had the ball in the forwards they seemed to have a lot more go forward and the rolling mauls from them were great.

When looking at forwards I think Lavercombe has a huge motor, playing 70+ dependable minutes . The QLD replacement hooker did well and I thought was just as good as their starting hooker before he went off with a shoulder injury. The Sheck/Uys battle was pretty even from what I saw (both with a good line break each) Maybe Uys had is just over the younger tight head in Sheck.

Looking at the locks, in general both NSW and QLD I thought was an even performance but I do like Ed K in the line outs (line outs were tough to watch today). As for flankers, again, relatively even (I do notice Orr is a lot of the action). In at 8, I think Justice was great and had solid runs and a nice try.

For backs, it really was all QLD. They created space and made the most of it. Kicking game from QLD was also much better than NSW by a country mile.
QLD did control the game better today. I look forward to watching these lads play against each other again in the coming years as the games are now much more competitive that in the younger years.

Anyone know when the PONI squad gets announced?
Can’t find any official date.

“In Feb & Mar the Waratahs U18 Academy side will play Qld in 2 x fixtures – from here a small number of identified players will be selected in a PONI (Players of National Interest) squad. Further players may be added to this squad over the year up until 7th Sep – so being in the pathway is vitally important.

The NSW Schools teams and the NSW Junior team will compete in the Australian Schools Championships to be held in Queensland in early July. The Australian Schools & U18 side will then be selected to play NZ.”
