Speaking of building a rugby brand, http://www.bloodandmud.com/2011/03/...ept-james-haskell-has-his-own-iphone-app.html
I agree except for the KPI's, the employer set's the KPI's, not the employee.
Barnes demanded changes in Reds coaching structure and left regardless
And look where he is now.
Seem to have missed this tweet about a brand, must have been asleep. Can someone update please as it seems to have been deleted.
.....Describing himself as a "brand" has exposed him to ridicule but it is probably reflective of the realities of modern professional sport.....
Boom 20-year-old James O’Connor is the latest member of the Qantas Wallabies to re-commit his future to Australian Rugby.
O’Connor has inked a new two-year deal with both the ARU and the Melbourne Rebels, joining the fledgling Victorian franchise after playing the first four seasons of his professional career with the Western Force.
“This is great news. It provides certainty, both for James and for Australian Rugby,” Qantas Wallabies coach Robbie Deans says.
“While James has already made a significant impact in his career to date, there is a lot more that can be achieved and he is striving for that. The last three years have provided a good base. We are all going to be working hard to make sure that there is a lot more to come.”
Nobody is questioning the skill of the bloke RedsHappy, just the way he has reportedly (and I emphasise that word) conducted himself in the negotiations. I still think he's a brilliant footballer and hope he chops 'em up out on the paddock, but he's come across as being a bit up himself. He's far from alone, but if you look at the negotiations that other players have undertaken in recent times (Beale, for example) and it's all been pretty no fuss.
"O'Connor revealed in an exclusive interview he had wanted to stay with the Western Force, but said he had no option but to look elsewhere when the club "changed the terms" of his contract negotiations.
"I had indicated to the Force my preference would be to stay another year and review second-year options after five months to make sure my rugby was developing," he said.
"They had agreed to these terms, but then I found out on Saturday they were changing these terms that had been agreed.
"To try to find a solution we proposed other options, but the Force gave me a deadline to make a decision.
"The deadline changed three times by the Force and in the end they gave me an hour to make a decision before they publicly announced they were withdrawing their offer."
TBH: I know you never miss an opportunity to criticise the Force and RugbyWA, but it is just possible that they may have made the right call here. Had this been the Reds of a couple of years ago in the same situation, would you have taken the same view? I seem to recall a fair bit of rancour around Berrick's departure and in hindsight, it was a good thing for QLD rugby. There is a chance of it turning out the same way here too.
