Sydney Subbies 2024

Or maybe they'll enjoy having the week off to rest some tired bodies. Players see "Wet Weather Week" in the schedule they've got half an eye on a week off anyway.

First Division Postponed matches -

R3 - Waverley v Forest
R3 - Mosman v Lindfield
R3 - HHill v Colleague

R6 - Colleagues v Waverley

Option exists for all of these to fall under the double points rule. R8 doesn't have that option, so better to get those out of the way, yes?

Greater good and all that.

Forest v Drummoyne round 7 for all grades except 1st grade to make up
Would playing the full suite of games in round 14 with 2nd grade and below playing for double points work? Thoughts?

Will go first cab off the rank for predictions this week, Div 3 as always, the true beating heart of Sydney's park footy scene.

Results - 3/4

Merrylands def. Old Barker 27-12:
Decent scrap from the Old Barker lads, Merrylands still trudging along stacking wins and you can't discount that.

Sydney Irish def. LCOI 52-12: I should have taken the overs this week! Irish shrugging aside the cellar dwellars and reminding everyone they're still one of the staples of the Div 3 title hunt.

Hawkesbury Valley def. Sydney Harlequins 32-21: Well there's the upset of the round! Valley capitalising on a few yellow cards, one humorously for the Quinns 9 bone headedly knocking the ball dead with his hand 10 metres out from his own tryline, resulting also in a penalty try, to cause a boilover on the road at Waterloo. Firmly opens the door for Knox in the postseason hunt.

Knox def. Sydney Oysters 32-29: Picked the upset and the margin here. Statement win by the Knox lads on the road against a team they'd never beaten before. High scoring, high quality back and forth encounter. Knox now controls their own destinty, with a make up mid week game against Quinns circled as a do or die for both clubs. Oysters will need to be careful they dont drop another one unexpectedly too...

After a few wet days and a few more forecast in the lead up to Saturday is there likely be more cancellations this week? A lot fields have been destroyed the past few weeks and only takes a small of rain to return them to a mud pit. Relationships with Council tested. Making life difficult to all involved!

The forecast quantity isn't huge but you're right: not going to take much in a saturated environment.

Several RL clubs out here have been forced to use the Field of Dreams after cutting up their own grounds badly. The ground is now getting used almost every day and while still solid underfoot, has definitely lost some of its lustre.

Div 4 getting in early:

Kings v Wakehurst - big day planned out at the school. Double points day as well. Picking the KOBs to give it all on the day but Wakehurst to use their big ball carriers to get it done.

Redfield v Chatswood - will depend who Chatswood can call on but they were good value against us last week. This is double points as well so going with the away side.

Canterbury v Renegades - we've picked up a few more injuries in the First Grade ranks which will make the away game tough. I think we might still have enough to squeak past Berries but it'll be close.

Raptors v Hornsby - match of the round, easily, with 1st away to 2nd. Raptors have a chance to temporarily overtake Hornsby, who have a game in hand. I'm backing the away side again.

Speaking to a bloke at our club who know his grass.... he said the sheer volume of water mixed with frosty mornings and cooler days with not much wind, the fields are just not getting a chance to drain. And we've just hit July.
Naht Good.

It doesn't help that some grounds are built in areas that aren't suitable for housing i.e. flood risks or low zones. There's a reason that open space is there, and it is not because it was the first choice.

Newport got smashed in a super cell yesterday dropping 60mm of rain! Thankfully heaps of wind forecast this arvo so the sea breeze will work its magic.

Grounds already being closed
With rain forecasted until Saturday seems unlikely that they will re open
Div 1 wet weather round in some danger potentially split points

Same old story - "If the ground gets used then we'd have to work to get it in shape for cricket season!"

They mow the grass too short, don't re-seed for winter, and wonder why the root base goes arse-up mid-season

Div 3 Round 11 Predictions - if they get any games on at all this week:

Sydney Irish (2) vs. Sydney Harlequins (5): Irish at home fresh off belting the life out of LCOI, while the Quinns go on the road fresh off a shock home upset against Valley. Quinns behind the 8 ball now as far as the finals hunt goes, also missed their first game against Irish so this could potentially be for double points, not much intel on that one. Would have to be one hell of a form reversal, so I'll take the boys in green. Irish by 12.

Knox (4) vs. Old Barker (7):
Throw the form guide out the window when these two former school rivals go head to head, in a match that usually brings down a couple of spare part timers for each team keen to throw their weight around against the old enemy. Barker has improved on late, but I don't think they're improved enough to take down an in form Knox outfit. The passion of the rivalry will keep it close though. Knox by 8.

Hawkesbury Valley (6) vs. LCOI (8):
As I've said all year, you never really know which Valley side is going to show up each week. Pumped by Harbour at home one week, upset Quinns away the next. If it's the former, LCOI could trouble them, if it's the latter, this should be a walk in the park. Give me the form side. Valley by 17.

Sydney Harbour (3) vs. Merrylands (1):
Easily the game of the round and a tough one to pick. Harbour upset by Knox last week but missing some key players who should return, whilst Merrylands keep winning but definitely look shakier on the road than they do at Holroyd. It's a long drive in Saturday traffic for the Merrylands lads, but they've shown they can comfortably handle the turn you around, around the corner style that Harbour plays... toss up. Give me Harbour by 3.

Yours in missing the sunshine,
PFE

Don’t think Subbies will wipe the round given that Lindfield Forest has already happened and Lapstone is still open for Mountains to take their game at Hunters there if Boronia is closed. Subbies will just asked the rest to catch the game up somewhere else which a club like colleagues could mean Saturday/Sundays for a few weeks… something no one wants

Not the field of dreams as well. I’m not sure what to believe in anymore!

An Anchorman style face off to decide the use of the grounds is in the works.... We have combat experience, but they have armour and bats.

Would love to hear some out of the box ideas for getting season 2024 complete, given clubs playing an uneven number of games?
Do we go into a straight 8 team knockout tournament?
